Today's question
Contestifying

Hi Lori and Matt,
I've been an amateur photographer for many years now and would like to see if people in general like my work as much as my friends and family do (or at least say they do).
As such, are you aware of any online photo competitions or adjudications (other than your weekly one, of course) that accept submissions, provide feedback, and feature winning entries?
Keep up the good work!
John
Toronto, Canada

Infinity and beyond

Over the years I have owned several different SLR cameras and lenses both film and digital. In reguard to lenses, why is it that some lenses can focus past infinity while others don't?"
I find this problem very frustrating and was also wondering if there is a way (cheap) to correct this problem?
Thanks
Thomas Day

Tough camera

Hey Lori and Matt,
I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for a very durable camera. The reason I asked is because I love doing outdoor activities such as mountain biking and snowboarding. I currently have a Canon A590 IS and I don't want to carry it and risk damaging it. Thanks for your help.

Hi Lori and Matt,

For some reason my previous comment seems to have disappeared so at the risk of repeating myself I wanted to thank you for the response to my "contests" question and it prompted me to submit an entry for yours this week:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/twojays/3276912552/

This was taken using a Canon 10D with a 400mm f4L and 1.6x extender during a trip to southern Africa. I also made public a couple other "Red" shots from my photostream. Enjoy!

We were having some trouble with our comments system this weekend, but I think it's all fixed now. Sorry for the trouble...

Hello again,

Nice show again, here is my submission for the Red contest. I took this shot on Valentines night. I used an AE priority Exposure of 30sec, Aperture of f/22, with a 50 mm on a Canon 40D. No tripod as I forgot it, just wedged it in between a rail and a wire on a fence.

Thank again for putting on this show, I find it useful mostly from the critiques of the images and hope to become better as a photographer.

You photo is OK for this contest but would be preferred a photo where the color red is the centerpiece if you want to increase your chances, red has to be the subject, not just a color in your photo.

You'll have to decide if you stick with this entry or you'll look into your library for another photo, I don't think Lori and Matt would mind if you change your mind.

Here is my red submission. A building under construction. I had a tough time choosing which of my red subjects to choose.

Shot with a Canon A540 point and shoot. Can we get some tips on helping those of us with point and shoot take better photographs? I can't afford a DSLR right now. Keep up the good show.

Why don't you look into a cool used film SLR. I have a 30 year old Nikon FM and I love it.

I love your show. I shout this with my d40x and my Sigma 18mm-50mm 2.8 about a year ago. Using two speed lights sb-600 and an sb-800. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks again, and keep the great shows coming.
