Hi Matt and Lori,
I'm in the market for a macro lens for my Nikon D40x and was wondering how one would go about choosing one. I primarily shoot yarn, knitting, and food for my blog (www.knitguy.com) and while I use the macro setting a lot, I think I'd probably be happier if I also had a macro lens. Budget is a bit of an issue because I am a college student but my birthday is coming up which is always helpful.
Thanks and love the show,
Adam (aka. Knitguy)
Senior Editor Lori Grunin has been covering digital imaging for two decades, but her memory's kind of sketchy on the details. You can hear about it every week on Indecent Exposure, the podcast she co-hosts with Matt Fitzgerald.

Lori Grunin has been an avid photographer for almost 30 years, and spent the past 15 attempting to master every aspect of technology.
Matt Fitzgerald has been involved with digital camera technology and the photo industry for more than 15 years. Matthew's background includes work as a professional photographer, a technical representative, and a repair technician.

Here is my submission for this week's contest fresh from "the oven" :

Good luck all (mostly me though).
I hope you guys like this one, doesn't need any explanation really, It's a picture of a set of lock gates on a Manchester (England) canal taken from a bridge above it.

some really good shots this week,
Good luck all
Andy.
This is a photo of a "trash the dress shoot."
There is no photoshop. It had rained about 30 min before. A train had passed over the tracks about 10 min before shooting. It reminds me of a damsel in distress. The camera was right down on the track, with focal point of her shoulder.
This one is really an odd perspective. I slanted the view some so that it would feel that much more edgier. I got caught without my dslr so I used my S3IS.

aftr: this is a sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky. The installation I've seen is at the Nasher Museum in Dallas, but it looks like there are others: http://www.publicartfund.org/pafweb/projects/04/borofsky_04.html
I have been stuck in a hotel lately so I tried to get a bit creative.

Finally settled on a camera & My entry is about 3rd shot on it. sigh... Your help and comments and the other members adding to this blog really helped in my selection. I think we will get along great. I have to go now, starting vacation, but just glad you liked my plasma light and hoping for better images of it in the future.

Another 'work in progress' shot this week:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/grapemac/3465795629/in/set-72157617099318025/
And the notes (oh the notes):
Was definitely inspired by the 'for stuff that's above you, look down on it' comment and decided it would be a trip to float a camera above myself/the surrounding landscape.
A weeks worth of having no time and some failed experiments with Helium/Hydrogen balloons later I was left with a few minutes free time tonight, a rapidly sinking sun, a kite, a sister and a mate (his name is Greeny and he is the subject of the image).
The wind however was not up to playing and there was not as much lift as one would have hoped so the initial ploy of sending up a Sony Cybershot W170 (Point and Shoot) in it's newly fashioned Polystyrene and bubble wrap housing were quickly aborted in favour of gaffer-taping the much lighter 'Flip - Mino' (Point and Shoot) video camera to the frame hurling it (and the kite) aloft and hoping for the best.
The resultant image is therefore in no way perfectly framed, has some wired-ass points of focus and frankly lives the aforementioned phrase 'work in progress'.
You do get the idea though...
On reflection however it does give one a deferent perspective on that piece of grass right there (Upper left corner) and if I really push it you also get an interesting new look at kite flying as illustrated by the below from my comment on Flickr and actuated by the strange lack of any shadow from the subject:
'For the giggles, for a moment relax your eyes (and sense of disbelief), then imagine that you are planted firmly on the ground (which one would hope you would be anyway) clutching for dear life that string in the bottom left corner of the image and that my mate Greeny is, in fact, floating weightless in an endless green sky...
...Or not, whatever.'
Again had loads of fun this week, can't wait for next week's assignment, looking forward to hearing what you think...

- Hmmmm.... it's probably a bit illegal to post twice... but after thinking about perspective for a few days, a few more of my images popped into mind... and so I created a "perspective" set on Flickr....
