Nikon D5000 vs. Canon EOS Rebel T1i: which is better? Lori begs you not to ask, but answers anyway. At length. Plus, problems with color management. And some of you have a hot time with toys. Toy photos, that is.

Hey Matt & Lori
This is my entry for this week! http://www.flickr.com/photos/pittoloj/3314324115/
This was my 1st time shooting sunsets. I also upped the contrast in PS, because I forgot to take the camera off auto...

Greetings,

This is a modified version of a sunset/beach shot I took while on vacation last year. The original was a reflection of the sunset's colors off the water as it was drawing away from the shore - I loved the pattern left in the sand. I converted it to black/white and modified the levels, producing this version.

Thank you for your consideration,
Adam

Hey Matt/Lori,

Thanks for answering my question on the T1i and the D5000. I'm leaning towards picking up the Canon once the price comes down a bit.

Here is my entry this week. It is a picture I took a little while ago at the beach while on vacation. I've always been pretty amazed at how it turned out. Was with an old point and shoot, so the image fidelity isn't there, but it is a stunning capture.

Thanks!

Gonna try to actually enter this time. Didn't want to wait to come up with a picture (it's almost ten am, a few hours past sunrise, but quite a bit before sunset) to be the one who just had to say the the frontrunner in the race is Yoshi! He's a dinosaur that eats enemies and let's Mario and Luigi ride his back. He made his debut in Super Mario World way back when the Super Nintendo debuted in about 1990 or so!

Hi,

This is my entry for the "Sunrise and sunset" contest

http://www.flickr.com/photos/owenmartin/2525153359/in/set-72157605271642945

I took this photograph for my work on pollution. This image was taken with a Canon EOS 30D and a 2600mm lens, I used a high ISO and fast shutter speed to get noise in the image and allow me to take it without a tripod. The image was taken at sunset which has given the plane's trail it's orange colour.

Thanks
Owen

Hello guys,

I want to ask you something first. Can you please talk more about the tilt-and-shift lens. I imagine myself a tilt-and-shift as a lensbaby 3g (control freak in v2.0) that only lets you move the lens up, down, left, right (the tilt part) but I don't know what the "shift" part does, can you please illuminate me how a tilt-and-shift lens works.

Here is my submission for this week's contest:

Summer 2009 Camcorder Choices?

As families prepare for Summer Vacations can you take a moment to talk about the latest video cameras.

1. New Developments
2. Top Three Choices
3. Emerging Tech: What are the expert thoughts on products such as the Canon EOS Rebel T1i and their video capabilities?
Can you kill two birds with one stone i.e. picture & video in one product?

My camcorder choices are:
JVC GZ-HM200 - a portable camcorder with 2 SD slots, a good battery life, grate zoom range and reasonable price. This camera is grate when you are backpacking.
Sony HDR-XR520V - has a standard size, 240GB HDD, grate in low light with illuminated sensor. This camera is can be equipped with battery pack that last 7 hours and is grate when your traveling in your car for long distances and multiple destinations. Has GPS and you can see where you took that video (and photos) if you don't remember exactly when you finally get home.
Flip Mino HD - standard battery (you can buy NiMh if you want), sd card slot, youtube HD quality, small.

I know that the majority of those camcorders are not on CNET, but I think they are the best in there respective classes.

Hope it helps,

I love sunsets, and I've taken lots of photos of them, though glancing through I realize that not terribly a lot of those photos are any good! They're good for remembering the sunset later, but not so much good as standalone photos.

Of those that I posted into a gallery [http://picasaweb.google.com/jamesey/SunsetPhotos], I think I'll go with this one for my first-ever contest entry:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EXvU7t-COFpohnCqmUyGAA?feat=directlink
I like the fiery (if a touch monochromatic) oranges as well as the solitary figure standing on a cliff off to the left.

After looking at WisnaemeCNET's amazing photo, I know I don't have a chance of winning, but figured I could give it a shot anyway :) All I've ever had are Canon point & shoots, and haven't yet worked up to a DSLR, so I'm pretty much reduced to working on framing shots and on my photoshop skills.

You took a great shot. Just a gentle reminder it's not the always the camera you use as much as how you use your camera. There are some people making great images with the iPhone and Holga. Both not the most wonderful cameras. Yet the best thing anyone can do is shoot, shoot, shoot and shoot some more. We can never stop learning.

G'Day all.

This is my entry for this weeks contest.

I went to the Canberra Balloon festival this year to shoot the hot air balloons taking off over the lake. The sunrise was MUCH more interesting.

Cheers, Tim.

I enjoyed your discussion on the D5000 vs the T1i, mostly because you didn't pick a winner! All cameras have good and bad points, but all do a good job too.

Sunset and Sunrise shots are my favourite!!! Trying to narrow it down to one is so tough... Sunrise with traffic, sunrise with trees, with clouds, with fog....

I'm going to post this one from last fall. It was not the shot I had intended to capture on this morning, but I love it anyway.

Submission for this week...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24405770@N05/3524027644/

-- High dynamic range, three exposures combined with Photomatix (just blending)
-- Warped (slightly) with Photoshop Elements to correct for a little distortion
-- Melbourne, FL... inside the hotel room at sunrise
-- D200, 50mm
-- Brown frame added just to make it look just right... I don't normally like frames, but without a matte of some kind, this image just didn't look good... hmm....

And even more important, the last shot before leaving to come home... I unpacked the camera just because the shot looked good at the last minute..

Thanks
Bill...

Having an 18 month old toddler means I don't have many opportunities these days to go out and shoot sunrise or sunset shots, so I dug up one from my pre-child days for this week:

Mount Rainier Over Lake Washington Sunset Stitch

Days like the one in this shot are what makes putting up with Seattle's usually overcast, drizzly weather worth it.

Hello Lori, Matt and everyone else

Here is my image this week, it is pretty much straight out of the camera. A little Photoshop Elements.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmacke/3383728236/sizes/l/

I took this a couple of months ago a little after 6am, I live on the eastern side of Michigan very close to Lake Huron. I intentionally got up early for some sunrise shots. The bonus were the geese that took off in front of me.

I wanted to let you know that I enjoy what you are doing with the podcast. It is very enjoyable to listen to and I can't wait for the next one to come out, and a little sad when a week is missed.

Keep up the good work and love the show.
Keith Macke
