Indecent Exposure 48: Engilded excursions

by Lori Grunin

Lori works through her ambivalence about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1; video for vacationers; in praise of point and shoots; and sunrise/sunset without the "Fiddler on the Roof."

Today's questions
More on tilt/shift lenses

I want to ask you something first. Can you please talk more about the tilt-and-shift lens. I imagine myself a tilt-and-shift as a lensbaby 3g (control freak in v2.0) that only lets you move the lens up, down, left, right (the tilt part) but I don't know what the "shift" part does, can you please illuminate me how a tilt-and-shift lens works.
Alex

Hi,

Loved the contest entries last week and the winner and honorable mention are both fantastic, well done.

I won't get chance to get any new car pic's this week so thought I might go with this one...a slightly different take on the theme.

Just shot this experimenting with my new toy last week and thought I'd share a couple pics that fit the contest:

It's funny how getting my photos organized in Aperture inspired me to finally get stuff on Flickr which reinvigorated the photo bug that had languished somewhat which inspired me to get a proper DSLR finally (film gets expensive quickly! I was also unhappy with the low-light sensitivity of the old Ultra-zoom I had been using).

I managed to capture evidence that the Military Police in the UK are trying to soften their image a bit.

As it was car related I thought it would be good for the CNET competition.

Good luck everyone.

Hello Lori, Matt and podcast listeners,

Could not find what I wanted to shoot so I used some of my own cars.

Full credit for the title of my entry this week "What a traffic jam!" goes to K.L. Macke. Thanks Keith! It was a possibility for the toy subject but I didn't use it. Now it fits this week's subject. And thanks for your nice words on my White Sunset photo.

Here's my "car" shot. It was done after I got kicked out of a resale boutique that I was wanting do some photography in. Stepped outside and saw this old abandoned car. Loved the clouds that were in the sky so I wanted to use an angle that would incorporate the sky. The post processing treatment went vintage in homage to the age and the condition of the car.

Sup' Peeps...

Less a photograph more of a treasured 'Snapshot' this week...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/grapemac/3551577021/

Dunnnnn, dun dun... Note Watch
('Gadgettes' reference there, look at me being all cross-podcastular...)

was digging through the archives and came across this and lest you think the car is not the subject I felt it evoked those old dog-eared family portraits that every family seems to hoard of everyone stood proudly by the new car, beaming and generally being very 'Kellogg's boxy'...

Taken on the same vacation as last week's entry.

That's the whole family there, me on the right, you've got to love tripods, self timers and that special breed of self interest that comes from never actually being in family photos...

Oh and I also dig the totally posed 'unopposed' feel makes me giggle...

One last thing I feel like we may have crossed a line here, I mean I'm actually sharing my boring-ass family holiday snaps with you... Would you by any chance care for a cup of tea?

Looking forward to next week's contest, keep doing what you do...

Andy

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for answering my question about getting professional prints. It was really helpful [I'll be using AdoramaPix as well as a smaller local business to compare and contrast]. In the same vein of my previous question of making larger prints after getting out of school. Framing, besides building my own, where should I look to for framing?

There are a lot of traditional framing stores here in Columbus, OH and there are tons of supply stores. Since I am making prints larger than 11x14 it is hard to find pre-cut matte board let alone a stand alone wooden/metal frame of any kind. Maybe I should just invest in a matte-board cutter and/or start up this photographers co-op.

Thanks Again,
Isaiah

I know I shouldn't really post twice, but I was just shooting this week and realized that this shot was a perfect train-geek take on cars:
