Hi,
Just thought I would share something with you all this week. I recently upgraded to a new iMac and it came with the new version of iPhoto. One of the great new features is locations.
But, as I don't have a GPS logger...or so I thought, I had to manually add the locations into the photo's. Then last week I realised that my mobile phone (Nokia E71) has built in GPS. So after a little research I came with the following solution to add GPS location data to my photo's. I use two free software program's. The first is called Nokia Sports Tracker which logs the GPS data while I am out shooting. What makes the software great is the ability to export the data as a .GPX file, a standard format for GPS data. On the mac I use GPSPhotoLinker to add longitude and latitude data to the exif data on photo's (either RAW or JPEG). It does this by matching the time stamps of the GPS data to those on the photo's.
This new addition to my photography is significant for me as I take a lot of wildlife photo's and having the location embedded in the exif makes remembering where photo's were taken a thing of the past.
Hope this is useful (and makes sense!)

Hi Lori and Matt,
I have a Canon 40d and will be traveling internationally. What would be the best all around lens to take? What is the best all around lens to just leave on your camera most of the time?
I've heard the 17-55, f2.8 is great. I was looking at the 24-105, f4, but I've read full frame lenses aren't good on these size DSLRs. I'd love to know what you think.

Senior Editor Lori Grunin has been covering digital imaging for two decades, but her memory's kind of sketchy on the details. You can hear about it every week on Indecent Exposure, the podcast she co-hosts with Matt Fitzgerald.

Lori Grunin has been an avid photographer for almost 30 years, and spent the past 15 attempting to master every aspect of technology.
Matt Fitzgerald has been involved with digital camera technology and the photo industry for more than 15 years. Matthew's background includes work as a professional photographer, a technical representative, and a repair technician.

I really do love this photo. I love the way the colors of the fireworks effect the color of the smoke. It just has a nice vibrance. I love the over-exposed look with it too since you can see the trails from the other fireworks. Hope you like it.

Here is my take on 'smoke'

Lee.
Regarding the Tivoli picture for the 1/30 Sec Assignment.
The picture was taken hand held, with a Canon 450D, 17-55 mm 2.8 EF-S Lens.
A good technique for this type of shot is to do a light reading and switch to manual. When the subject comes flying at you, press the shutter and hold it for 3 to 4 pictures, usually the second picture will be the sharpest.
And a steady hand also helps :o)

Happy shooting, Jesper
PS. Heidi, I love my 17-55 mm 2.8, it's fast and really sharp, but I always combine it with a 55-250mm (and a 10-20 mm for good measures) when I travel.
I had some fun with this one, needless to say some does get in your eyes now and then. Here is my idea and I think Andy is rubbing off a bit.

Gee you guys can really push a person, which I love! It's great to try new things.

I've listened to the podcast for some time, but have usually lagged too far behind to submit to a contest. Fortunately I listened to this episode early enough to enter as I have a set of smoke photos that I used to begin to teach myself photoshop techniques. This one is my favorite:
Taken with Canon EOS 5D, Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens with off camera flash (Canon 580EX II)
Incense smoke manipulated in Photoshop, negative image, side-to-side reflection.

This one is also from the same set of shots. Turned upside down and a color gradient applied in Photoshop (I can't find the rules...if there's only one submission per person then ignore this one):

We will be looking for these things and anything else you can think of before the local fall art festivals begin:
- inexpensive place to get prints of various sizes made (having them matted would be a plus and maybe some on canvas)
- best ideas for displaying work and where to find cheap materials (tents, displays, etc)
- pricing ideas? best to price low for more sales or high for more profit?
Thanks Lori, Matt, and anyone else that can help us out!

It is a woman leaving an offering at Den Ngoc Son (Temple of the Jade Mound) in Hanoi. The Rising Sun Bridge in the background is a very famous landmark.

I wanted to ask if anyone has herd of or had an issue with flashes being not compatible with the newer equipment? I have a Canon 40D and an old Speedlite 220 from my old 35mm Canon Rebel. I have heard that there is an issue with the voltages on some of the older flashes that can cause it to "KILL" the newer cameras. I have not been able to verify this and if so is there a safe way to use these flashes. I am afraid to try it as of yet. Also can anyone recommend a similar flash head to the Speedlite 430EXII?, maybe for less cash. I am limited I would like the 580EXII features at the 430EXII price. I am not sure if Metz or an other brand would be as comparable.
Thanks a bunch!

A very literal translation of the topic, methinks. Straight out of the camera, except for the resizing. Macro at 1:1.

A couple of summers ago, Napa Valley was blanketed in smoke from wildfires. Made it tough to breathe, but made for some dramatic skies.

Even though this is not a great shot it did take some thinking for ASA and shutter speed.
Also I think I was more worried about cropping out the name on the plastic bottle than anything else.
Would not want to give a commercial product a bad image or something. Anybody ever get a take-down for doing that?
OK excuse me while I go look for my genie.

Loving Canada, surrealitood level off the scale at times but all in all an awesome trip...
In deference to requests I have not in fact 'burnt down Canada'... To be honest I was kinda bummed to not be at home with artistic collaborator, friend and fellow explosions enthusiast Andy ('Sunderlandy' on Flickr & 'andrew_rutherford77' on here/CNET) and his mind boggling collection of things that make interesting vapours...
Anyhoo cheers KeithMac2007 for keeping the side up! Awesome image dude! In fact there have been some amazing submission already I particularly like 'x-ray style smoke' and 'pouring smoke' by Jeff Barnes ('JCBarnes' on Flickr & 'airtraffic' on here/CNET)
Here's mine:

Only very slightly 'on theme' in fact mainly with the subversive actually... However it does give me a chance to make a couple observations...
1. Radisson Hotels rule, free in-room Interwebs baby YEAH!
2. My MacBook has a woefully under-capacity HDD for a trip of this nature especially when one has, as I do, a rather 'happy' shutter release finger (4000 exposures thus far, granted some are for HDR's, Pano and Virto-ramas and large format stitches but STILL)...
3. Wow, Nikon (NEF) RAW's is big files, Yeah I could shoot in .jpeg but how often do you come to Canada (Question not for those actually on this continent)... ?
4. You will notice in the shot the sexy new 320Gb Iomega 'eGo Helium' USB HDD I have had to purchase to transfer the resulting and still growing photo library from the trip, it's working well but seriously HOW ANNOYING IS CANADIAN SALES TAX? Sticker price: $129.95CAD, price on checkout: $146.68CAD!!! $16.73CAD IN UNDISCLOSED TAXES!!! In the UK back when I worked in Retail if I had charged a different, higher price at checkout than on the POS (Point Of Sale, read - 'sticker') I would be obligated to charge the lower sticker price, would get a b*llocking off my supervisor and if Trading Standards found out would be in for an even bigger b*llocking with possible repercussions for the store (Can you tell this was beaten into us with a sharp stick?)... Seriously do you guys just put up with this? Is this normal? Because to me quaint Englishman that I am enticing with one price then selling at another is just plain dishonest, yes I know I am totally at liberty to not complete the transaction and yes I probably could have found this or a similar product at another store cheaper than the Apple Store Montreal (I know, Fan-Boy) but that really isn't my point, we've been caught out on this a few times this trip with products as simple as Soda and frankly it's been a pain in the a*se, not a huge pain in the a*se but, you know... Also I'm sure I would get used to it were I to live here and these things would just become second nature and the look the nice Sales Assistant gave me as I tried to pay with only $130CAD which lead to a very lighthearted and funny conversation between her, another sales person and myself about taxes and how confusing they are would be justified and each to their own and peace and tolerance to all nations and all but wow... Also, sleepy... :::end rant:::
Hehe... How much can you tell it's 0110hrs and I go home on Saturday...
Anyhoo hope you like the shot, it's a nice composition if nothing else, I like the overall 'smoky' (get it?) shades of grey/silver and of course the tenuous link thing peeks my mildly rebellious nature...
Here's another I took slightly more on topic of me not being 'good to my lungs' outside on the Marina here in Kingston... This one doesn't have much smoke in it either and is a rather unsuccessful (good enough for one handed though) attempt at something akin to the 'Film-Noir'-Macro-shot-of-a-smoking-cigarette-in-an-ashtray-in-the-centre-of-a-street-cafe-table-with-people-walking-past-out-of-focus,-the-shallow-depth-of-field-at-once-excluding-you-from-and-drawing-you-deeper-into-the-many-mysteries-of-the-passing-street concept I came up with in Montreal but we had traveling to do and now we're in Kingston and tomorrow we're in Toronto again and I'm sleepy and what do you people want from me d*mnit... Also:

Hope you guys get a kick out off these looking forward to your comments as always... If you want to see more of the on-going Canadian odyssey the collection is here:

Oh and after looking through the submissions again 'Digital Salsa' (Flickr) or 'jeppcharts' (Here/CNET) or Eric's wonderful, dramatic and beautiful image 'Wall of Fire' reminded me of this image I shot last month:
http://twitpic.com/bv2vk
(That's right, I have a different Handle on there... Sorry!)
My original submission still stands but you may (or may not) get a kick out of the others... This one was shot at the Sunderland Air Show this year and shows the RAF Red Arrows (http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/). As it happens this is one of my first ever shots with an ASLR (Analogue SLR), a rather beaten up, old ASLR that had a wonderful heft to it and a comforting 'old' smell akin to WD40, it is (the shot) very poorly scanned and needs a lot of work but hey, it has smoke in it, lols...
Anyhoo... Got some big plans for Toronto and not a whole heap of time to accomplish them in so wish me luck and I'll type to you again on the flip side...

p.s. i think leanard goh is from cnet asia singapore. we do have lower standard for spoken english. and we have heavy influences from the different languages we have here, thus the accent is actually quite bad.

- Probably too late for the contest - but ... here is a self portrait smoking a cigarette. There was a movement in modern art at the start of the 1900s - Edward Munch did quite a few ... that is where I found my inspiration
