Is a slimmer PS3 in the works?

by David Carnoy

This alleged spy shot of a PS3 Slim box may very well turn out to be a fake--or not.

(Credit: Kotaku)

Back in 2004, after the PS2 was on the market for four years, Sony went ahead and shrank its design down and brought out a new model dubbed the "slim" PS2. It was a great move and Sony initially couldn't keep up with demand for the system.

Now, five years later, rumors have been percolating that Sony might be preparing to trim the PS3, with an outside chance that the company might have something to say about a new design at E3. While early reports we read seemed pretty dubious, a set of alleged spy photos of a PS3 Slim (with a new PS3 logo) surfaced on Chinese Message boards late Wednesday and seemed slightly more promising.

The original report stems from a PlayStation LifeStyle post declaring, "Redesigned PS3 to be revealed at E3." That's a rather bold headline, but the story deflates it rather quickly with a disclaimer that, "Of course, this is just yet another rumor..." However, the site claims to have "caught word" that Sony will not only take the wraps off the new PSP Go at E3, but unveil "another hardware redesign."

"We didn't get any specifics, but we speculate that it could be one of a couple different options," the post goes on to say. "First off, it very well could be as simple as a white or a silver PS3 to go with the white and silver DualShock 3s that have been made available." The writer also admits that the hardware in question might refer to Sony's rumored Wii-like motion-sensing controller, which may also be announced at E3.

T3's rendition of a slim PS3

(Credit: T3.com)

I4U News picked up on the story and then Engadget took a whack at the rumors with a bit of its own speculation, suggesting that a trimmer PS3 would be in line with Sony's alleged move to a smaller Cell processor and RSX chip in August.

For the record, it should be pointed out that this whole slim PS3 rumor is actually rather ancient, with T3 and Engadget asking whether the PS3 was on the verge of a slim down over a year ago, in February 2008. In fact, the image to the right is from that original post.

Anyway, that's the anatomy of this latest rumor and you can choose to buy into it or not. On the one hand, Sony could use E3 to radically alter its gaming fortunes with a couple of bold new designs for its hardware systems. Or, it could just announce the new PSP and superficial changes to the PS3 that are designed to trim costs so Sony can finally break even on the system instead of losing money on each one.

All that said, at the end of the day, the most important thing Sony can do now is sell the PS3 for $299. If it can get there by slimming the thing down, and hopefully not stripping out any features, that's great. But I think people would be just as happy if Sony found a way to get to $299 with the current design.

Anybody buying this rumor? Will Sony come out with a totally new PS3? Would a slimmer version entice any XBox 360 owners to switch allegiances?

Note: As for Sony's response to the rumors, it says, "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3."

Eh I hope they do it well though I remember when they did the thin ps2 and it served as a space heater.

As long as they've got a handle on possible overheating with a smaller case, then it should be good to go. I've always figured that's why the 1st gen was engineered because of the air circulation that is required.

The Cell is supposedly going to undergo another die shrink to 45nm so that should cut heat output somewhat.
by NervClaX May 14, 2009 11:58 AM PDT
They could have slimmed down the design from day 1 by putting the power brick on the outside instead of the inside. Instead the opted to put it inside the console and as a result, it weighs a ton. Still love it for what's on the inside, though :)

The 360 has the power supply on the outside and it still weighs more than the PS3.

@NervClaX
Why in heavens name do you want an external PSU! My PS3 fits in my media cabinet just fine. None of my amps, DVD players or other devices have an unsightly external brick so I hope that the PS3 doesn't feel the need to go that way either!
by paulimusmaximus May 13, 2009 3:26 PM PDT
Why not instead of shrinking the system, they shrink the price. This is probably just a dumb rumor anyway, like the price cut. I wish they'd come out and say they're either gonna lower the price or not. I don't care if they don't, I have an xbox 360 for games, but I am just about to buy a blu ray player, and I don't want to spend $199 on just a blu ray player if a month from now I can get a ps3 for only $100 more.

I really can't see them wasting money shrinking the system if they can't get people to spend the money on the system they have now.

You'd pay for a 360, HDD, Live, and any other add on that comes standard (excluding Blue ray) with PS3 and then ***** about the price for the PS3. Is it me or does the RROD shoot out a high frequency sound that makes people loyal to garbage?
by ReigningChamp May 14, 2009 6:45 AM PDT
Where is he b*t*t*c*hing about the price? Didn't he say he doesn't care if they don't lower the price? You sony fangirls need to jump off a bridge. Learn to spell Blu-ray correctly, and hopefully that "high frequency sound" makes your head explode.
by Gianni_Simplicio May 14, 2009 7:13 AM PDT
Roach is right. I bought my 360 because (at least partly) of the price difference. But once you thrown in all the crap you have to buy including Live subscriptions for the life of the hardware it's actually significantly more expensive. Problem is, everyone else in the world got fooled by the same Microsoft trick and now I NEED a 360 if I want to play multiplayer with any of my friends. As soon as the thing redrings I'm never touching a Microsoft product again.
by roachbrain May 14, 2009 1:26 PM PDT
2- ReigningChamp

"and hopefully that "high frequency sound" makes your head explode."

They probably would like to but couldn't make that work either. RROD..E74 erro....errrr. Calm down dude i'm sure your xbox will be back from the repair shop with brand new ducktape to hold it together. Microsoft ducktape at that; yeah man the good stuff.
by SNOOP_ROCA May 14, 2009 3:38 PM PDT
Hey, you Sony/Microsoft fanboys gotta calm yourselves down, LOL, BOTH consoles have their own strong points, xbox has a strong online service (I dont care WHAT u say, it is MUCH better than PS3 online, seeing as I have both, I would know), a large amount of games that either are better on the xbox, or are xbox only, and (contrary to popular belief) is virtually malfunction free. The PS3 has exclusives, but most of them are over hyped, disappointing games, it also has a built in browser, which is VERY nice, and also it has Blu-Ray (which I heard is coming to the xbox supposedly).....

NOW, BEFORE YOU FANBOYS ATTACK ME, I HAVE BOTH CONSOLES, AND LIKE THEM BOTH, MY POST IS COMPLETELY UNBIAS, EVEN THOUGH I PERSONALLY FAVOR XBOX!!!!!
by not2worried May 15, 2009 11:28 AM PDT
Price wise, they are both close when you factor everything in. But I still give the edge Xbox with better online.
But each have there plus and minuses. Though I would pick up a PS3 if the price dropped. Hard to justify two gaming machine in the house.
by wdfowty August 18, 2009 2:42 PM PDT
@ snoop: I HIGHLY doubt the "Evil Empire" will add bluray drives in the future. Would probably hurt their sales, and the load times would suffer.

As for the PS3 Slim, i highly doubt it. I could smell fake from a mile away. How hard could it be to print a computer generated image onto a cardboard box, take a pic on your phone and send it to a website?
by sillygoosen May 13, 2009 3:27 PM PDT
They wouldn't be able to do this I dont think. I think it would cost too much to redo production when the PS3 is already too expensive. Unless they can somehow redesign a slimmer PS3 AND cut the cost. Cause it's too expensive to compete I think.

You can buy a 360 for far cheaper and not miss out on many games since even final fantasy and traditionally PS only games are now multiplatform. Or the casual gamer will simply go with a Wii. Price point is what they should be focusing on. Because by the time they get the price point down and competetive other companies will be coming out with nextgen systems that make it looks silly and deserving of the lower price.

The speculation is that Sony is still taking a loss on each PS3 system sold. A slimmer PS3 would certainly make it more appealing/competitive. But any new manufacturing process is expensive, so a retooling would have to cut production costs significantly. Only Sony knows if this possible.
by Orion Blastar May 13, 2009 3:36 PM PDT
I am more concerned about price drops than slimming the PS3.

My son has the Slim PS2 and we bought it for $129 and they still make PS2 titles for it. The main factor we have for not going to the PS3 is the price of it. Get it around $200 or $159 or so and we might buy a PS3. $299 is still too much, and over that is a rip-off because it reaches the price of low-end PC systems that can outpower the PS3 in memory, hard drive space, and computing power.

not true. with some moding you can replace the hard drive, up to about 500GB. and the PS3's processor runs at 3.2 GHz, which is more powerful than most conventional desktops, albeit it not be able to run instructions from Windows or Macintosh...
by deathxxshark May 13, 2009 8:36 PM PDT
Hah. The PS3 is far more powerful than any low-end 400 dollar PC. ESPECIALLY in computing power. I don't know where you're getting your facts, but I don't think any Intel Core 2 Duo is stronger than the PS3's cell processor. And also, you can install linux on a PS3, which makes it even more useful. And with low-end 400 dollar PCs, you don't get as much multimedia capabilities as a PS3. With a PS3 you get a decent Blu-Ray player (probably one of the best ones out there), video player, music player, and media steaming.
by Renegade Knight May 14, 2009 7:36 AM PDT
You can install Linux on the PS3 and run it like a computer. Boot one way for the console, the other way for a PC.
by memeroot May 14, 2009 7:52 AM PDT
you can add a bigger hard drive to the low end pc cheaper than you can add one to the ps3 as you can use 3.5" drive.
the ps3 also has almost no memory - struggling even with linux. The pc naturaly can have its mepory expanded to 4gig for the price of a meal out
for games the ps3 will probably out perform any pc costing $399 but if you have an old pc around you could probably upgrade one for $299 that would play crisis on high - something the ps3 never will.

though there are many many other benefits to having a ps3 naturaly - just not the above.
by theoboley May 14, 2009 8:42 AM PDT
lmao You want a $159.00 PS3? What planet are you from...
by viper396 May 14, 2009 10:16 AM PDT
@ Firehazel, argueing that a PS3 is more powerful simply because the processor runs at 3.2 GHz only confirms that you have a shallow understanding of the subject. Computing power and performance is not measured solely on clock speed.
by khanezhyray May 14, 2009 3:21 PM PDT
@ viper:
Yes, he's wrong Firehazel is wrong to assume that faster clock speed means better... however, it is more powerful than a low-end PC. Significantly. The Cell processor is unmatched in processing performance. Heck, even the 360's processor is still dang impressive compared to PC processors you can buy. The reason consoles can be sold for less than $1000 and run things as well as $1500 computers, if not better, is because they sacrifice things like RAM and change the system's architecture around so that it doesn't work like a PC. It's meant to be a dedicated gaming console/DVD/Blu Ray player. I mean, you don't buy a DVD player expecting it to double up as a web browser (even though some do nowadays). You can't expect everything to approximate a computer's specs.
As is, the PS3 is still being bought and linked up with other PS3s to use the huge amounts of processing power it has. However, if PS3s/360s doubled up as computers, everyone would buy them, and just mod them to be used as computers, because they're so cheap.
So, take your pick. $300-400 console that's JUST a console, or $1000 console that can be a PC as well. Who would buy a console for $1000? Not I.
by Kendokill May 15, 2009 1:32 AM PDT
But Orion, low end PC systems don't have blu-ray, do they? :)

Won't this add more cost to the PS3? I mean reworking the factories to manufacture a new unit isn't free. Sony is going to have pass these charges off on someone. Unless, the original unit is so massively overpriced that they can afford to take this loss. I personally feel that this redesign is an attempt to artificially keep the PS3 at the same price.

I was under the impression that the longer Sony makes the PS3, the better they get at making it. I took that to mean eliminating inefficiencies that add cost and adopting new techniques to reduce cost. In my mind that equals to manufacturing savings which they could pass on to the customer instead of paying for an unwanted aesthetic redesign.

It likely is about cutting the cost of the PS3. Passing on savings (or losing less per unit) is another thing.
by 1eye1 May 14, 2009 9:08 AM PDT
@Renagade Knight

It likely is about trying to do anything to sell PS3's before Sony losses another billion dollars. I doubt you actually believe that cutting off a few grams of plastic will lower the costs of the PS3. What kind of cuts are we talking about? Getting rid of blu-ray, a hard drive, or Wi fi.
The quickest way to reduce the price of the PS3 might be to remove the name Sony from the console.
Its probably already made at the same Lead Toy Factory as the makers of the Chin-station Tree.
by poly_pusher May 14, 2009 11:11 AM PDT
It wouldn't necessarily just be an aesthetic decision. One person mentioned the upcoming die shrink for the cell processor. A die shrink would significantly reduce the amount of heat produced, allowing for cheaper cooling components. This applies to all components present in the system. The lower ambient temperature will extend current components lifespans or reduce the other heat removing/resistant components. A 45nm die shrink would not just be for the ps3. It is for all Cell processors. The die shrink also allows more cell chips to come off of a single silicon wafer, improving yields and subsequently reducing cost, not to mention improved manufacturing techniques for a 45nm fabrication process in which cost reduction is certainly considered. A slimmer format along with these features makes sense. It distinguishes the ps3 with newer components from the original. So from a marketing, financial and technical standpoint it is all around a very good idea.
by megustansalchichas May 14, 2009 12:04 PM PDT
'pass on to the customer'? a ONE THOUSAND MILLION dollar loss is not something that motivates business people to 'pass the savings on to you'. if any redesign is done, it'll be done to maintain the current pricing.

The PS2 had its uber expasnsion bay to lose. Of course there was some other engineering done to slim down the system, but the most obvious was that empty spot for a HDD. I dont know the exact anatomy of the PS3 but I doubt theres much to trim off.

Slimming down does nothing if people still arent buying the thing, a price drop and more exclusive games would be the first thing I would work on

So far my PS3 is a Blu-ray player and then a PS2 game playing machine after that, I do not own ONE PS3 game as I've rented and beat the few I cared about (Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword) after trying Resistance 1 & 2 (terrible games IMO, nothing new or exciting) and Kill Zone 2 (still another FPS that I dont care about much) there is really nothing else on the system worth playing, there is nothing I look forward to getting this year really at all.....just waiting for those hopefully great RPGs that only the PS3 will have (yet the biggest being FF XIII is on all systems and I will get it for the 360), but that doesnt seem to be happening, if there is any game thats on all of them, I always get the 360 version, better achievement system, better online play, options and community (I'm sorry but the PS3 has free online argument doesnt work since it sucks compared to LIVE) and it doesnt require installing to run, taking an extra hour to install some of these games on the PS3 is stupid and a waste of my time

Give me more games Sony (and other developers) and I will gladly start supporting the system more, otherwise it DOES make a great Blu-ray player!

What game took an hour to install? Your PS3 HAS to be broken...or your internet sucks, which would explain why your online experience on the PS3 sucks as well.
by Vidfreek May 15, 2009 12:04 PM PDT
Nope my PS3 works great, have the top internet in my area 1.5 mb/s down speeds, everything is great, but the features for PS3 online arent near as good or streamlined as the 360 and Live, doesnt matter what fanboys say about PS3's online, it still cant compare to LIVE, free is free and you get what you pay for so to speak

Devil May Cry 4 took about 40 minutes to install, not fully an hour, but I was exaggerating a little there, Devil May Cry 4 on the 360, plays as soon as I put the disc in......I love my Blu-ray player, but for games it seriously sucks bad since its so damn slow
by Kendokill May 15, 2009 1:40 PM PDT
Now hold on a minute here. There is no need to call me a fanboy when you yourself admitted you were exaggerating about the time to install. Also, games tend to start playing on my PS3 as soon as I put the disc in. I swear, your PS3 is broken, or again, you're exaggerating. Any game on any console starts running a disc when you put it in. That's not even a point of debate.
by Mike+1 May 14, 2009 7:33 AM PDT
Sony might be considering a slimmer PS3, but it will be hard to reduce costs just by using less plastic. It is already down to 2 USB ports, cutting Wi-Fi won't save much, 80gb hard drives are cheap, might save a few pennies here or there, but not much to cut out and have the same game console and Blu-ray player system. The power supply can be moved out of the unit to a brick, but I prefer not to have a power brick to deal with and like the design the way it is now. Would-be buyers and gamer journalists continue to talk of rumors for well over a year now about price reductions and re-designs every 2-3 months, but Sony has continued to deny that either are going to happen every time. The PS3 needs more, better, cheaper games to keep it competitive. It is still the best Blu-ray player you can buy for $399 even if you never play games due to the wired network, streaming and Wi-Fi capabilities to go along with an 80gb hard drive that can be easily upgraded to at least 500gb for about $75 and still have an 80gb drive to use somewhere else if desired.

sony has 3 problems
more expensive to make than the competition
people aren't wanting to pay the premium so they have to sell it at a loss
its so expensive to make that even when making a loss they are still more expensive than the competition
so they cant sell enough to make the cash back though licence charges

I think sony accept that they will never make a profit on ps3 but cant drop it as the brand would be damaged to much.

so its a case of damage limitation now - hence no new price cuts...

@theoboley

The cited source is "Sony reports $1 billion annual loss" by Lance Whitney, CNet. It doesn't actually say that the PS3 will be reduced to $299.99, but if you squint your eyes and read between the lines, its obviously in there.
by HMetal68 May 14, 2009 10:10 AM PDT
The PS3 will not be $299 this year. All you have to do is squint your eyes until they are completely closed and be blind to think that a company reporting a billion in losses is going to reduce the price of something they are already losing money on. How would cutting the price help them? I was never great at math but taking a negative and making it more negative doesn't sound like a solid plan to change it to a possitive.

Seems to me that the 10 year strategy is finally starting to make sense. 10 years to finally make money on the PS3. That is if anyone cares about the PS3 in another 6 or 7 years after Nintendo and MS release their new consoles in 2 or 3 years.

I also wonder how much longer Sony will offer the free on line gaming. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see an announcement that Sony will start charging. Then again, Sony's on line isn't worth paying for.

I purchased the 160 GB PS3 bundled with Uncharted for $433 with a 20% coupon from Dell. Signing up for and using a Sony Rewards Playstation CC, I was able to get an instant credit of $100 for the purchase from Dell. After using it as my primary CC, I was able to get two additional $100 dollar credits withiin the next 6 months. So I purchased the 160GB Drake's bundle for $133 after shopping around for a good deal.

Unfortunately, that deal is dead. You can still get some form of a good deal with a Sony Rewards CC though.

PS3 will take this gen, just like PS2 did the last gen. Not at first, but eventually.
by HMetal68 May 14, 2009 2:01 PM PDT
The PS3 will not win this generation of consoles until it is no longer the current generation. The XBox 360 continues to outsell the PS3 by almost double every month. The only way Sony can catch up is if they start outselling the competition by a wide margin for an extended time. So far that hasn't happened, yet the Sony fans continue to say that the PS3 will be the number one just as the PS2 was for the last generation.

I'm not saying one is better than the other. I own both (actually if you include the Wii I have all three). The PS3 is a good system and so is the XBox. But whether the PS fanboys want to admit it or not, the 360 continues to sell more systems each month. As long as this trend continues, the PS3 will never be able to catch up. Period.
by theoboley May 15, 2009 1:00 PM PDT
@1eye1

Unless I see a specific headline that comes from Sony itself stating "PS3 down to 299.99" I consider anything else mindless drivel.
