364 days and counting to iPhone 4G
Now that the iPhone 3G S is officially behind us, let me be the first--or at least one of the first--to announce the countdown to the next new iPhone. If history is any indication, it should show up right around this time next year.
Interestingly, even though the 3G S is technically Apple's third-generation iPhone, some tech pundits were expecting the iPhone 3G S to be called the iPhone 4G. But you could also argue that the iPhone 3G S is more like the iPhone 3.5G, which doesn't have the greatest ring.
There's also a chance that in between the iPhone 3G S and iPhone 4G (or whatever it's called), we might see a totally new branch of iPhone, something akin to an iPhone Mini or Lite.
I'm not sure Apple needs to answer to the smaller form factor of the Palm Pre, but there are some people out there who think the iPhone's just a tad too big. And there are some people who want a physical keyboard, but don't count on Apple slipping in a slide-out keyboard anytime soon.
Gizmodo and other blogs posted this concept art for the iPhone 4G before Apple announced the 3G S.
(Credit: Rodolphe Desmare)All that said, I do think next year's iPhone will feature a new design that also includes a new screen. Some mock-ups floating around have suggested the aluminum unibody design of the new MacBooks. That's possible, but so are a host of other innovative industrial designs.
The point is, the next go-round, it's probably not enough to just stick with upgraded internal components. Some significant cosmetic changes will be required to differentiate the generations and more easily entice upgrades by existing iPod owners. And I'm not talking matte vs. shiny finish.
Ultimately, however, it's what's inside that counts and consumers are always wanting faster, more powerful smartphones with more memory that somehow manage to be more energy-efficient and offer better battery life. There's already talk of the next iPhone having a dual-core processor and better graphics chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better still images when taking pictures (read Brooke Crothers' story on new ARM chips here).
The question is whether Apple can continue to increase battery life at the same time. In fact, one big reason a lot of people are interested in upgrading from the 3G to the 3G S is because of the improved battery life.
Beyond the hardware, there are still features concerns to address (everybody has their wishlist) and more importantly, carrier and pricing plan issues. Someday, some other carrier, perhaps Verizon, which is preparing to build out a 4G network, will get the iPhone. And someone, maybe Apple, will declare that iPhone the iPhone 4G. Or maybe it'll just be the 3G V. All I know is that come this time next year, we'll most likely be seeing a new iPhone. And it will be here before you know it.
Comments? Aside from a carrier choice, what are looking for in a true 4G iPhone?
Hunkered down in New York City, Executive Editor David Carnoy covers the gamut of gadgets and writes his Fully Equipped column, which carries the tag line "The electronics you lust for." He's also the author of "Knife Music," a novel. E-mail David. Follow David on Twitter.

Read what he wrote: "Interestingly, even though the 3G S is technically Apple's third-generation iPhone, some tech pundits were expecting the iPhone 3G S to be called the iPhone 4G. But you could also argue that the iPhone 3G S is more like the iPhone 3.5G, which doesn't have the greatest ring."
Obviously he doesn't think the 3G S is the third and a half generation iPhone. He's saying it could be called the iPhone 3.5G because AT&T is now offering 3.5G data speeds. Same logic for 4G
AT&T will not have 4G network by next summer at all. They might release a iPhone 3.5G instead of 4G because of AT&T's lack of upgrading their network. (Sprint already has 4G)
AT&T having 4G network is years down the road.
Even though apple releases iPhone 4G, we wouldn't be able to use the 4G function.
Samsung in particular demonstrated a foldable OLED prototype last year that's really cool.
720p output I dont think anyone is doubting that 720p on a screen that small isnt useful, but Apple has component output cables so in a perfect world you could output 720p videos on the go to a flat screen in a hotel or at a friends house.
look up video chat
However, for the regular camera, I would rather Apple getting a bigger lens for better picture, maybe zoom, instead of getting more pixels.
I think the only reason that Apple hasnt implemented multitasking is battery life. Its not that their hardware isnt capable, especially when its running basically the same ram and processor as the Pre. But I have seen many Pre's not quite live up to their battery expectations and those were set to the level of the current 3G which isnt that great. I would love to see multitasking in the next iteration of the iPhone. I will say though the 3GS is really fast and almost makes the need for it less of a priority, but it would still be nice.
Maybe more colors...except that apple seems to liek black and white.
a different screen(OLED)
Custimization....themes...font changes, oh a Flash camera....and wish could control the sensitivity on the touch screen...
Still stuck with the super expensive 1st Gen I had bought and will just wait it out till next June/July!
We shall know more about this when they tape-out the chip for manufacturing maybe sometime later this year.
The Multi-Core Processor sounds like it's a go. I'd like to see an OLED screen. And please, please, please Apple, get Flash working on the iPhone/iPod Touch. A front facing camera would be nice, and Apple needs to take another look at Background Processes. Push Notifications doesn't solve every problem Background Processes would. Things like Streaming Audio from Pandora or MLB At Bat need to work in the background.
Just a thought... does anyone else think that the current white iphone would be more appealing if both the back AND the front were white?

- All this talk about a Verizon iPhone is exciting, but didn't AT&T have a 5 year exclusivity deal which means 2012 -- not 2010... That said, Verizon comes out with an iPhone and I order it the next day. I hate AT&T. I am skipping the 3GS.

- Yes, Apple has a five year deal exculsivly with AT&T. I hope Verzion is faster with 3G, and I get to keep my plan.
