364 days and counting to iPhone 4G

by David Carnoy

Now that the iPhone 3G S is officially behind us, let me be the first--or at least one of the first--to announce the countdown to the next new iPhone. If history is any indication, it should show up right around this time next year.

Interestingly, even though the 3G S is technically Apple's third-generation iPhone, some tech pundits were expecting the iPhone 3G S to be called the iPhone 4G. But you could also argue that the iPhone 3G S is more like the iPhone 3.5G, which doesn't have the greatest ring.

There's also a chance that in between the iPhone 3G S and iPhone 4G (or whatever it's called), we might see a totally new branch of iPhone, something akin to an iPhone Mini or Lite.

I'm not sure Apple needs to answer to the smaller form factor of the Palm Pre, but there are some people out there who think the iPhone's just a tad too big. And there are some people who want a physical keyboard, but don't count on Apple slipping in a slide-out keyboard anytime soon.

Gizmodo and other blogs posted this concept art for the iPhone 4G before Apple announced the 3G S.

(Credit: Rodolphe Desmare)

All that said, I do think next year's iPhone will feature a new design that also includes a new screen. Some mock-ups floating around have suggested the aluminum unibody design of the new MacBooks. That's possible, but so are a host of other innovative industrial designs.

The point is, the next go-round, it's probably not enough to just stick with upgraded internal components. Some significant cosmetic changes will be required to differentiate the generations and more easily entice upgrades by existing iPod owners. And I'm not talking matte vs. shiny finish.

Ultimately, however, it's what's inside that counts and consumers are always wanting faster, more powerful smartphones with more memory that somehow manage to be more energy-efficient and offer better battery life. There's already talk of the next iPhone having a dual-core processor and better graphics chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better still images when taking pictures (read Brooke Crothers' story on new ARM chips here).

The question is whether Apple can continue to increase battery life at the same time. In fact, one big reason a lot of people are interested in upgrading from the 3G to the 3G S is because of the improved battery life.

Beyond the hardware, there are still features concerns to address (everybody has their wishlist) and more importantly, carrier and pricing plan issues. Someday, some other carrier, perhaps Verizon, which is preparing to build out a 4G network, will get the iPhone. And someone, maybe Apple, will declare that iPhone the iPhone 4G. Or maybe it'll just be the 3G V. All I know is that come this time next year, we'll most likely be seeing a new iPhone. And it will be here before you know it.

Comments? Aside from a carrier choice, what are looking for in a true 4G iPhone?

Mebsk, won't be called "4G" because the 3G finally permitted 3G data speeds. We won't have widespread 4G data speeds by next summer, especially AT&T, which can't even accommodate basic functions like MMS and tethering. You were probably confusing the "G" with the generation of the iPn, but it referred to the data network speed. (The 3G was actually the second gen iPn). You should already know this, Carnoy. It's not like you're a cub reporter for the pennysaver.

im pretty positive that he knows this. and im pretty positive most of the readers here that are interested in phones know what 4G means. There's a possibility for 4G by next summer..maybe not widespread but enough for the IPhone to have the capability.
by sahilk June 19, 2009 3:31 PM PDT
and that is exactly why it will launch on Verizon
by cvsats2 June 19, 2009 5:08 PM PDT
haha of course he knows what he is talking about eludium (although its inspiring how proud you are of your knowledge).

Read what he wrote: "Interestingly, even though the 3G S is technically Apple's third-generation iPhone, some tech pundits were expecting the iPhone 3G S to be called the iPhone 4G. But you could also argue that the iPhone 3G S is more like the iPhone 3.5G, which doesn't have the greatest ring."

Obviously he doesn't think the 3G S is the third and a half generation iPhone. He's saying it could be called the iPhone 3.5G because AT&T is now offering 3.5G data speeds. Same logic for 4G
by superasian827 July 22, 2009 8:51 PM PDT
Actually, iphone 3gs has MMS and Tethering AND has ability to send videos now. iPhone 3g has tethering alone.

AT&T will not have 4G network by next summer at all. They might release a iPhone 3.5G instead of 4G because of AT&T's lack of upgrading their network. (Sprint already has 4G)
AT&T having 4G network is years down the road.
Even though apple releases iPhone 4G, we wouldn't be able to use the 4G function.
by jcuadro October 18, 2009 6:18 PM PDT
Completly wrong, the 4G network is already in testing with AT&T in the FL market and the tethering and MMS functions are available on the IPHONE they were just locked as AT&T didn't want people using it. Now MMS is available and the tethering function will be unlocked in future models. Do a little research before letting you anus talk so much crap about a company. Sincerly AT&T Tech rep

I'm thinking a rollable OLED touch screen next year. OK, maybe not next year for the rollable part. That would help with power consumption.

I agree with that. There were so many rumors of Apple ordering OLED screens right before the 3G S came out, so there's a better chance it will show up on the next version. (plus, the ZuneHD will get one, I don't think Apple will sit out of that battle)
by slapppy June 19, 2009 7:29 PM PDT
Have they fixed longevity with OLED and does it finally work outside on daylight? Thats the biggest drawback on these.
by mbenedict June 20, 2009 4:01 AM PDT
Those OLED problems have been long solved. Sony Ericsson has had a color OLED cellphone for at least three years. The S001 released earlier this year in Japan has a gorgeous 3.3" OLED screen and a 8mp camera. Nokia, Samsung, etc., currently sell color OLED cellphones as well.

Samsung in particular demonstrated a foldable OLED prototype last year that's really cool.

I think you really meant 182 days until the next minor update that should have been in the 1Gen iPhone.

You mean command line access?
by ballinhair93 June 19, 2009 11:08 AM PDT
What I want in the 4G iphone is a front facing camera, HD graphics, a 5.0 or higher megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.1, wireless charging (if you don't know what I mean, look into intel, they started researching it with laptops), connectivity with other great devices used in daily life (ex: a magic bullet, a tv, a tech savvy skateboard), background processing, and having another cool slick design. Thats about it for now.

Funny thing about the HD graphics, at the tear down of the 3GS its chip is capable of 720p its just not turned on. I wonder if that will happen with a software update.
by zidanetribal21 June 19, 2009 2:37 PM PDT
What is the point of watching a 720 pixel tall video on a 320 pixel tall screen? Where I'm from, that is called useless.
by oooh5615 June 19, 2009 2:41 PM PDT
A front-facing camera? Do you only take pictures of yourself?
by Staszek June 19, 2009 3:26 PM PDT
@ zidanetribal21

720p output I dont think anyone is doubting that 720p on a screen that small isnt useful, but Apple has component output cables so in a perfect world you could output 720p videos on the go to a flat screen in a hotel or at a friends house.

Sounds like Samsung's Omnia 2 (also has OLED and a whopping 800MHz processor) which is due out in the next couple months from Verizon. Don't get me wrong, I love my ipod touch mostly for the software, but Apple's hardware is so last year. It's amazing how good software can make you forget you just shelled out a couple hundred plus contract for old technology.
by johnqh June 21, 2009 9:02 AM PDT
I would like to see a front facing camera too.

However, for the regular camera, I would rather Apple getting a bigger lens for better picture, maybe zoom, instead of getting more pixels.
by Staszek June 19, 2009 11:20 AM PDT
I am looking for screen tech changes. I was hoping for it this time around, but going to an OLED screen like the new Walkman and the announced Zune HD would help in several areas. Besides have a fantastic screen (not that the 3GS is bad) it would enable the phone to be slimmer and also save battery life.

I think the only reason that Apple hasnt implemented multitasking is battery life. Its not that their hardware isnt capable, especially when its running basically the same ram and processor as the Pre. But I have seen many Pre's not quite live up to their battery expectations and those were set to the level of the current 3G which isnt that great. I would love to see multitasking in the next iteration of the iPhone. I will say though the 3GS is really fast and almost makes the need for it less of a priority, but it would still be nice.

I don't think they'd slim down the iphone if they put an OLED in it. They'd probably just put a larger battery in it and keep the same relative size since it works so well. As for multitasking, I personally wouldn't want it for anything other than Pandora. But a neat thing that Apple could do would be to have a switch for each app to allow it to run in the background. That would be ideal for people like me who would only use it for 1 or 2 apps.
by jskrenes June 19, 2009 11:22 AM PDT
I think it should work on Verizon. And record in HD. And have better graphics and processors. And better battery life. Also because I'm a longtime ATT/Verizon/Apple customer, I should be able to upgrade to it early. And it should cost me anything. I don't want to have to pay extra for the data. And would it be too much to ask for if I could get it right now?

Im thinking maybe like a 5 mega pixle cam... although on my 3g the 2 pix is pretty good...I am upgrading to the 3GS later today so I cant wait... Pretty much all i wanted from the iphone we got. With video recording and also the digital compass, its going to work awesome...I use the GPS alot., so yeah
Maybe more colors...except that apple seems to liek black and white.
a different screen(OLED)

Custimization....themes...font changes, oh a Flash camera....and wish could control the sensitivity on the touch screen...

3G is the network. You cant call it a 4G unless it's capable of 4G network connectivity. That's like calling my 56.6k dial-up modem the "WIFI" or "801.11b" version. Do you have any idea what your talking about?

That's what I said. I'm gonna wait for the 4G instead.... I know 4G is not the likely network speed but would be Gen4 of the iPhone.
Still stuck with the super expensive 1st Gen I had bought and will just wait it out till next June/July!

Even though multitasking would reduce battery life to some degree, I think Apple should give the choice to the customer instead of making the decision for them. The iPhone could deny background processing to any application the user has not granted permission to.

One thing for sure is that the next gen iPhone will be based an Apple in-house designed processor as the result of their P.A. Semi acquisition in 2008. There is no commercially available processor today and in the horizon to meet Apple's vision for iPhone. Therefore, they have to build one themselves.

We shall know more about this when they tape-out the chip for manufacturing maybe sometime later this year.

I'm not getting one until it's on Verizon so...that's priority 1. AT&T just absolutely sucks here. And Verizon has great coverage, I've never had a dropped call outside a tunnel or something.

The Multi-Core Processor sounds like it's a go. I'd like to see an OLED screen. And please, please, please Apple, get Flash working on the iPhone/iPod Touch. A front facing camera would be nice, and Apple needs to take another look at Background Processes. Push Notifications doesn't solve every problem Background Processes would. Things like Streaming Audio from Pandora or MLB At Bat need to work in the background.

A laser similar to the ARI proto small arms engagement system to blast other weak non-Iphone 'dumb phones' would be nice. Plus improved battery life to obviously blast more of these dumb phones....:) Bow down and worship at the altar of Apple...

I try not to get my hopes up. I would be willing to bet that Apple will once again wow us with something good next year. I have to say though, that concept Gizmodo posted is pretty sick looking. I would love to buy that exact phone if I could.

Just a thought... does anyone else think that the current white iphone would be more appealing if both the back AND the front were white?

that's a good point, actually. it's kinda like a half and half or zebra phone lol if the white model was all white that would be so cool

Yeah, I think I'll wait, I have always been the type of person that waits in lne for the fresheest gear...but since ApHOLE and A&TaxnTake crap on their early supporters I'll see what the next model will bring...Hopefully by then it won't be with AT&T.

Yeah no kidding. paid 500 for the original and bought the 3g for 300 as soon as that came out, i wouldnt even mine them making me do a 3.5 year contract to get the 299 price but im certainly not paying 500 for iphone 3.5. as soon as the new one comes out next year for a different carrier im dropping att in a heartbeat.
by zhakidd532 June 19, 2009 3:05 PM PDT
You did sign a contract. You have to finish paying for the phone, that's why you get the higher price. It sucks, but it is what it is.

All this talk about a Verizon iPhone is exciting, but didn't AT&T have a 5 year exclusivity deal which means 2012 -- not 2010... That said, Verizon comes out with an iPhone and I order it the next day. I hate AT&T. I am skipping the 3GS.
