According to various rumors and reports, Apple's got a new slate-style Netbook in the works that may be announced as soon as next month. While we have no confirmation from Apple--or anybody else--that such a product really exists, that doesn't mean we can't do a little market survey and ask you what the thing should be called.

If the rumors are at all on target, the final product will look something like a jumbo iPod Touch. However, what's interesting is that such a PC would most likely be a crossover product for Apple and straddle several product families, includes iPods, MacBooks, and maybe even Apple TV. So, is it part of one of those families or a whole new category unto itself?

Only time will tell, but for now you can cast your vote in our poll of popular candidates or write in your own choice in the comments section. We strongly doubt we'll have any influence whatsoever over Apple's decision, but, hey, people at Apple do read CNET. At least a couple do anyway.

Hunkered down in New York City, Executive Editor David Carnoy covers the gamut of gadgets and writes his Fully Equipped column, which carries the tag line "The electronics you lust for." He's also the author of "Knife Music," a novel. E-mail David. Follow David on Twitter.

I chose Mac Touch. It's not clamshell like a laptop, so the Book suffix shouldn't be used. :P

If you call it the "MacBook Touch" then everyone will just shorten it to "MacTouch," just like with the iPod Touch => iTouch phenomena. Then again maybe the "Macintouch" would be more suiting.

iFad sounds fitting, but that's already the street name for the iPhone and the iPod. So maybe iTrend or iCandy or iPOS.

Fad?

Millions sold. Market leader. Fad?
All other smartphone vendors are FOLLOWING Apple (as is Microsoft with "aero glass" Windows).

What Apple does well is take anemic products and make a much better version.

Seventeen?? That explains everything. Oh, and if selling 250,000,000 iPods over the last eight years is a fad, that is one HELL of a fad.

Then that is a damn shame because plenty of people I know, young and old, find them plenty useful. I guess we didn't get the "they're not special anymore" memo. Damn shame indeed.

I know the iMacTouch. You relize apple will never make a tablet mac. Reson is that they figure that you have a ipod touch or iPhone, so you have a touch screen phone that does email, play songs, record video and sound, ect. so why make a tablet mac, when they can sell a iPhone with out the cost of parts, softwhere ,ect.

Oh yes, they could well make a tablet. But it has to also be a phone. Because to bridge the gap between a laptop and an iPhone you have to be BOTH. If it is, it will sell like crazy because the only draw back the iPhone has as a computer is it's small screen and the two drawbacks a laptop has being portable is that isn't a phone and it's too big for many people in many situations. I know many places have wifi ?which is fine for an iPhone but it still is a bit awkward to pull out a full fledged laptop. You will fine with a device this size people will start carrying them in a pocket in the small of their back. Military people have been carrying file folders and papers in this way for decades ?without the benefit of a pocket ?just stuffing it into their belt. This "back pocket" is crucial for the success of the Apple netbook because men don't carry purses and we all need a bigger pocket and a quickdraw method for something this size. You're welcome Apple.

by Gadget70 August 4, 2009 1:23 PM PDT
I think you're right, macbook touch will probably be the name. Although I do agree with the previous poster that it's not really a book since there's no clamshell design. Apple is at it again, taking something (tablet computers, smart phones, laptops) and making it sexy, desirable and easy to use. I know what I'm getting for Christmas. This will be my primary computer at home propped on a stand as a display with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Then when I take it with me, I'll tether it to my Rogers iPhone (sorry AT&T US customers)

So what if I am Andre Da Costa - there it is I am Andre Da Costa? Nothing new people, yes I love Microsoft products like there is no tomorrow. Search it all up, I even run a Windows Enthusiast blog Teching It Easy.

As for you stickfu, I hope you enjoy being associated with Roy who has been described by Linus Torvald himself as a disease. Good for you, because I couldn't find a better description myself.
by ckh1272 August 3, 2009 6:31 PM PDT
"stickfu" says it best I think. Mr. Dee is the lucky owner of an Acer Ferrari laptop provided by, drumroll please, Microsoft. I take nothing he says seriously and neither should anyone else.
by Mr. Dee August 3, 2009 9:55 PM PDT
So this all about a stupid laptop from 3 years ago. Example of people who just don't have a life. My reputation is worth more than your disease.
by jezzali August 4, 2009 4:39 AM PDT
@ "My reputation is worth more than your disease"

You don't have a reputation chum. Nor credibility.

Here's the reality of your "reputation": You are widely known as quite possibly the single most pathetic Microsoft shill in the history sad little shills.

Congratulations...

So this all about a stupid laptop from 3 years ago. Example of people who just don't have a life. My reputation is worth more than your disease."

No, it's just one example of why you have absolutely zero credibility. Judging by your retorts regarding this, I would say it supports the zero credibility statement. ZERO!! What you call "disease", I call deciding for myself instead of letting a corporation basically pay me for praise. I don;t doubt that you feel the way you do about Microsoft, but you can't expect anyone to take you seriously when you "praise" them. That is like me being given a free Porsche and going online and touting their benefits to everyone. Now I already liked the company but a free car for free "advertising" would not go over very well in car discussion board as I would automatically show a bias towards one company, thus weakening any credibility on my part. Do you see my point, or are you basically going to keep on whining now that everyone has found you out??
by stickfu August 4, 2009 5:53 AM PDT
Regarding your reputation, don`t you think having an objective opinion regarding competing platforms would enhance your rep as opposed to spouting vitriol towards anything that`s not platform XYZ? No one is compelling you to switch platforms, just attitudes. Every OS/platform has interesting features and capabilities there is no perfect solution, at the end of the day if it works for you, thats the right choice. Vitriolic comments make "technology evangelists" look frankly very unprofessional.

I always thought you and monkeyfun had some mental problems, where from 3 world countries and were to a very wide degree iliterate, i have found 2 of my 3 questions and have now introduced another one.
There is clear evidence that you guys if not "work for microsoft" clearly at least scrub their nuts.
The word that you guys spread arround is poison to people that dont know any better. what you are doing is a direct defiance to openess and taking all of the fairness off the game (think a la microsoft). just a side note (You are a cheap ****, selling your mind for as little as 600 dollars to the richest company in tech history, lol wow.)
How dare you try to make a case for your reputation, you have never had one, never created one, and now basically keep trying to change your name back and forth to see if you can get a new start.
but you do have something, you dont know how much i laugh with ya, specially monkey fun who claims to be 17 and actually reminds me of my 12 year old cousin. Hopefully, they are fair enough to give you a free windows 7, i know i couldnt afford it. thank god i got a mackbook pro which upgrades in september for 35?, i guess im not cool enough to be a pc :-( lol, suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...hmmm, except it's not a "book" since it doesn't close (at least not evident from the pictures). MacTablet (or iMacTablet) would be a more fitting description.

If it functions as an eReader, then "book" could still be appropriate.

MacTablet really does have a satisfying ring to it.

iPad. Personally, I don't care for iPad, but think people: If it's a tablet, calling it a "book" makes no sense whatsoever.

There was already an iBook from Apple. I don't think they make it anymore or they changed the name to the current MacBook. They could call this MacBook Slim, but that might make Sony mad.

It will probably be called iPad Touch.

Unlikely, but I like: iSaac (starts with an "i" and reference to Newton)

Mandatory comedic entry: iKindle
