iPhone too quiet? Software fix likely coming, restore may help

We continue to report on an issue (see previous coverage) where users indicating that the iPhoneâ??s earpiece and speakerphone volume are too low, even at the loudest setting. Readers noted that compared to most other mobile phones, some iPhones' sound output â?? for voice functions, at least â?? is subpar. Users have reported, and we've noted in-house, differences between individual units, with some being louder than others.

It now appears almost certain that Apple will make some sort of adjustment to the volume control/output of already-shipped iPhones because of one key factor: many users have reported that volume is variable, being louder in some cases after resetting then suddenly becoming quieter. Further, performing a restore on the iPhone has proven successful in restoring louder volume in some cases.

To perform a restore, Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and, in iTunes, click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc.
