(SAVE YOURSELF and DO NOT DO IT!)
I'm just here to report that Apple's 1601 ERROR iPHONE problem is still here in late July 2009.
(We have been attempting to fix it for a full day now).
Thanks to the UPGRADE the phone is useless and not worth spending $200 to fix.
BTW both my wife and I are computer "experts".
Warning: If your phone is out of warranty, you cannot affor to chance the 3.0 upgrade.
At this date, Apple is in full cover-up mode, unable or unwilling to address the issue.
Google search is no help (lots of flakey user ideas, yep we tried them all).
Look at the original date of this CNET problem, Aug 3, 2007.
It is now 2 years later and Apple still has problems with version rollouts.
Apple get your shiznit together! Breaking people's formerly working stuff with your s/w!

- It is possible to get back to firmware 2.21 again, though hardly ideal (we all want the new firmware right?), it is at least a fix in the mean time.

(5 Comments)If you're using windows xp (and Vista too I think), simply create a new user account:
- Put your iPhone (or iTouch) into recovery mode (hold down the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and then release just the power button. let go of the home button when the iTunes logo with the USB adaptor below it appears).
- Start iTunes and choose to restore it to factory settings when given the option.
