Making the "Web Gallery" button appear on your iPhone, not showing up for some

We originally postulated that Apple would soon be releasing a software update for the iPhone that adds a "Send to Web Gallery" function to the Camera application.

However, it now looks like the option is already appearing for some users, and may only be enabled if you have a .Mac email account set up on your iPhone, and may require a reset to appear (hold down the sleep and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears). To put a .Mac account on your iPhone, go to the Settings application and select Mail, then create a new .Mac email account credentials.

A .Mac support page states:

"To add photos directly from iPhone to your .Mac Web Gallery: Make sure you've set up your .Mac email account on your iPhone. [...] If you don't see the Send To Gallery item, make sure you've set up your .Mac email address on your phone and that your iPhone has the latest software updates."

Unfortunately, we still did not receive this added button after setting up a .Mac account on our iPhone, performing a reset, and making sure the software was up to date. Several readers have noted a similar situation.

The button links with new .Mac iPhone integration functionality that allows photos to be sent directly from the iPhone to the new "Web Gallery" function (which offers an app-like interface to photos stored online). The same Web Gallery can be directly accessed in an iPhone-optimized fashion.

Are you seeing the new button? Please let us know at info@iphoneatlas.com.

This option is already available on my phone with Update 1.0.1 and iTunes 7.3.2...

When you click on the button, it says that you need to go to .Mac to enable mobile access to your Web Galleries. But I can't for the life of me find a place to do that on .Mac. I rather suspect it's not possible without first buying iLife '08.

You must have a .Mac account. If so you must have your .mac mail set up on your IPhone.
Once you have CHECKED your .Mac email using the IPhone it will show the Send To Gallery option.

However, I think you must have ILife '08 for it to completly work.

@Ken - I ran into your same obstacle and the same frustrations looking for that enabler setting at .mac. But once you have a web gallery or galleries uploaded via iPhoto '08 those galleries are presented to you on your iPhone instead of that "you must enable mobile access" advisory.

It shows up on my phone, but like above, it says I must enable the capability in .Mac, but I can't figure out how to do that...

When Apple made the announcement on Tuesday, I checked my iPhone and the feature was already there. I suspect they slipped it into iPhone software update 1.0.1 (which you get via iTunes).

Even after installing iLife '08, I had trouble getting the phone to work -- I kept getting the message that I had to configure my galleries to allow updates from mobile devices, but on the .Mac side I could find nothing to specifically allow/deny "mobile devices".

Turns out what they *really* want you to do is allow updates to galleries via email.

When you create an album in your photo galleries, you can control if the album can be viewed by everyone, just you, or only people who you allow (you create user names & passwords and provide them to your friends). You can then control whether visitors are allowed to submit photos to your album via web browser uploads and/or via email. You _must_ enable the "email" updates feature for the iPhone "Send to Web Gallery" function to work correctly. Each album can have it's own security settings. The iPhone checks each album in your gallery page for permissions and then displays a list of all albums which allow updates via email.

Only iLife '08 has this "Galleries" feature. If you don't update to iLife '08 then you can't use the feature on your phone (it'll show up... you just can't get it to do anything.)

Tried for several days to get the "Send to Web Gallery" button to appear with no success even though I have a .Mac account which was automatically set up on the iPhone when activated and synced with iTunes. I also had installed Update 1.0.1 and have iTunes 7.3.2. Finally today I deleted the .Mac mail account on the iPhone and set it up again using the Add Account feature in the Mail Settings. After a short period of time on the charger the "Send to Web Gallery" button appeared without turning off Wi-Fi and without resetting or rebooting the iPhone. Seems like the .Mac mail account created during the initial sync with iTunes was not recognized for the addition of the web gallery button.
