iTunes package contents reveal "iPhone Game," "Voice memo," "FireWire" entries

by Ben Wilson

The folks at DownloadSquad recently did some digging in the iTunes Localizable.strings file, which contains various text entries used by iTunes for error messages, user notifications, and interface text, and found an interesting entry:

  • /* ===== iPhone Game Item Strings ===== */
  • "4329.001" = "Are you sure you want to remove the selected game from your iPhone?";
  • "4329.002" = "Are you sure you want to remove the selected games from your iPhone?";

We did a little more digging, and found some other interesting entries:

  • "4320.077" = "Voice Memos";
  • "4320.079" = "The iPhone â??^1â?? contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?";
  • "4320.080" = "Moving voice memos to your iTunes libraryâ?¦";
and
  • "4320.295" = "You must connect using FireWire to update the iPhone â??^FILENAMEâ??.";
  • "4320.296" = "You must connect using FireWire to restore the iPhone â??^FILENAMEâ??.";

While these entries certainly don't mean with any certainty that the iPhone is getting games, voice memo or FireWire support, it does mean that the iTunes interface is ready for such updates, were they to occur.

You can dig through this file yourself in Mac OS X by selecting the control-clicking the iTunes application icon, and selecting "Show Package Contents," opening the "Resources" folder, then opening your "English.lproj" and finally opening the file Localizable.strings in your favorite text editor.
