iPhone voice dialing (sort of) for $5 a month

The iPhone lacks a built-in voice dialing mechanism. However, it does offer easy access to AT&T's $5-per-month VoiceDial ("VoiceConnect") function, which is accessible by tapping "Settings," then "Phone," then "AT&T Services," and finally "Voice Connect," or by simply dialing *08 on the keypad.

The service, unfortunately, requires that you set up a remotely stored address book (it can't dial the numbers stored on your phone). You can, however, import contacts from Yahoo!, Outlook, and other email programs. It stores up to 2000 contacts.

VoiceDial also requires more steps than most built-in voice dialing functions. You have to either press the phone button, then the keypad button, then dial *08, or store *08 as a contact.

If you have to tap a contact to activate the voice dialing, why on earth would you go to the trouble of doing so, to say nothing of paying a $5 a month premium for the privilege? In other words, is there any conceivable use for this feature?

Maybe through a update you will be able to call voice connect with a touch of the button on the bluetooth headset or on the home screen. But has it is right no, you would on gain the benifit of not scrolling through all of your contacts for the one you want.

I have been using this for a while and it works very well. It gets it right at least 95% of the time.

I set the number up as a contact and then added it to the top of the list in my favorites. When I'm driving I make sure that my favorites screen is on before I start my trip. If I need to make a call I simply turn on the phone and click the voice dial favorite. I have a hands-free car kit that takes over.

One disadvantage is that in my "recent's" column the calls show up as "*8" - not as the number I called.

It is not a perfect solution but it is much safer than looking up a number on the road.

Voice on the Go is a similar service for 5.99 which you can similarly use to call your contacts (there are limits in minutes per month) US/Canada wide and also access to your mailbox including reading the mail and sending mail.

If you ask them, they might have a shortcut kinda mini application to put on home screen to call the number automatically; you still will have to register and setup your mail account and contacts on their website but it is a much better deal than 5$ for only voice dialing given you use the mail functionality (IMAP or POP required)
