Apple has cut the price on the 8GB iPhone by $200 to (from $599 to $399) and killed the 4GB model. Apple was previously selling a refurbished 8GB model at $499. Update: Though the 4GB model has been discontinued, it's available on clearance for $299.

Actually Apple was selling the refurbished phone for $499 - $100 more than the new price.

I am guessing us some of us have paid a 33% early adoption fee.

I am confused by this move in particular. I and hundreds of thousands of others went out and got an iPhone early (not so long ago a month and a half) and paid $599 for an 8GB model and $399 for the 4GB model. (You will note that Apple knew it was making these announcement plans at the iPhone release.)

Now owners of the discontinued 4GB model feel used since they have a virtually new obsoleted product and a person 5 weeks later who gets more capacity at same price. While owners of the 8GB model feel like being among the first to support Apple and their product cost us $200.

There has to be more to this than meets the eye since this risks pissing off everyone who bought an iPhone to this date.

If Apple goes by their usual "too bad you bought it early" rule, I just spent $200 for 40 days' use of an iPhone. I love the iPhone, but it just seems a bit pricey to pay $5/day for the honor of owning one. I guess my old rule--don't buy anything from Apple until it's had at least two revisions--is one I should have stuck with.

This is disgusting. Paid $599 for iPhone a month ago! It is becoming harder and harder to be a Mac lover with this. New iMacs, iPods, etc. Seems that Jobs is only about $$$. Stock prices will fall soon.

This just kills me! I've owned a 4GB model for about 30 days now, and while I dig it as much as the next iPhone owner, I now feel like I've been scammed by Apple. They must realize that this could only hurt future sales of their devices if the market sits tight and waits for the (now expected) 30% discount. For cryin' out loud., it has only been 2 months and my device is discontinued! Shame! Sorry, but now offering WiFi iTunes somehow does not make me feel better.

I am not sitting down, but maybe I should. I am not going to cry about $200.00. I am going to cry about getting egg in my face from Apple. 30 year Fan and now this. I honestly can't believe that Apple has disrespected their most loyal base by dropping $200.00 in 60 days.

This reminds me of the Lisa days long past. Is this phone a dead deal like Lisa, and I just didn?t see it coming? Okay, I got to get a grip here and may be go buy iToner or something productive.

How many of the price reduction complainers have walked into their local BMW/Volvo/Mercedes dealer, plunked down 30/40/50 grand for a new car, and as soon as they signed on the dotted line, lost 1/3rd of the value of the car, before they even drive it off the lot!

Get real, there are far greater corporate "gotchas" out there than this.

I suspect that APple's post-release research indicated that the unit's pricing =was a bit too high to reach the sales figures they desired. The price drop made it uneccessary to have two models, thus the demise of the 4GB model.
What Apple should do it offer all early adopters a $200 rebate on any Apple product they purchase in the next year.

E-Mail is cheap and, in this case, not likely to be acknowledged by Apple. Those that truly feel cheated as I do should write Apple via snail mail as I did. Maybe an overflowing mail room will get Apple's attention.

I have been using Apple Computers since the Apple IIe. I understand that seeing price reductions is the price you pay for being an early adopter. But this move by Apple is the worst yet. To have your product discontinued after 5 weeks of use and have the closeout price reduced to $299.00 is beyond disrepectful of the loyal support that many of us fans have given Apple throughout the the last 25 years. A free upgrade to 8GB or a $200 store credit would be the correct thing to do. I love the phone and the products this company makes - but I think they should treat their customers better than they have recently.

Ditto. I just wrote a letter to Jobs.
Look, we're all adults. We made our choices. Apple has the right to change pricing every day if it wants to. But just like my choice to purchase last month came with a $200 premium, Apple's robbing-peter-to-pay-paul strategy will be sure to hurt them in the long run. I liken it to a political candidate who alienates his base. He may get lots of cheers at a rally, but will certainly start losing elections.

Quit ********! I was #5 in line on opening day. If they told me they were going to drop the price then I still would have bought it. This device is truly amazing and I am glad I didn't wait...
