iTunes 7.4.1 released, disables ringtone trick

Apple has released iTunes 7.4.1 (Mac, Windows) which appears to serve no purpose other than disabling the trick that allowed files renamed with an .m4r extension to be used as ringtones without separate purchase under iTunes 7.4 (released earlier this week).

Meanwhile, iToner -- a tool for transferring ringtones to the iPhone without hacking or jailbreaking -- has been updated (version 1.0.1) to resolve an issue where ringtones transferred by it were deleted by synchronization with iTunes 7.4.

Looks like Apple is going to give iToner a run for its money. They will get my $15. I'm not going to be an early adopter who shelled out $600 for an iPhone and then have to pay $.99 on top of the song cost for a ringtone. No thanks. Even if i never make more than an enough ringtones on my own to justify spending $15 for iToner, it's a matter of principle.

iToner works as advertised even on 7.4.1. Phew...

What upsets me is that Apple is making it difficult for people who want to make their own ringtones from their OWN material: for example, if I compose something using GarageBand, I can't use it for a ringtone because it isn't an iTunes Store purchase. That's lame. Very lame.

Seems like Mr. Jobs is not willing to sacrifice the .99 per ringtone without a fight. Maybe he needs the revenue to pay for the iPhone early adopters rebate!

According to this site http://joemaller.com/2007/09/08/make-custom-iphone-ringtones-work-with-itunes-741/ opening the ringtone folder and changing the file extensions of your ringtones BACK to m4a will enable them again in 7.4.1.

I haven't tried this yet but other posters at the site supposedly verified it.

Workaround for 7.4.1 disabling ringtone. Courtesy of engadget:

Go to your iTunes library/ringtones and find the AAC ringtones you had switched to .M4R

Change them BACK to .m4a

sync and they now are working ringtones again.
