How to sync ringtones for free under iTunes 7.4.1

Apple's release of iTunes 7.4.1 put an end to the free transfer of current AAC tracks as ringtones to the iPhone -- for a day or so at least. Though the process is now a bit more involved, it still works. Here's the new method:

For Windows users:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, duplicate and rename any AAC with the extension "M4R" (e.g. Folsom Prison Blues.M4R). If it is already in your iTunes library, delete it from there first.
  2. Double-click on the file. It will be added to your iTunes library automatically (you might need to drag it into the iTunes library instead).
  3. Click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone, but it will not properly transfer to your iPhone at this point.
  4. Navigate to My Documents\ My Music\ iTunes \ Ringtones.
  5. Rename the desired (.m4r) file with the extension .m4a and double-click it again.
  6. Use iTunes to sync your iPhone.

For Mac users:

  1. Duplicate and rename any AAC file, then select it and choose "Get Info" from the File menu. In the "Name and Extension" section, change the extension to .M4R, e.g. "Folsom Prison Blues.M4R." If it is already in your iTunes library, delete it from there first.
  2. Double-click on it. This file will be added to your iTunes library automatically (you might need to drag it into the iTunes library instead).
  3. Click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone, but it will not properly transfer to the iPhone at this point.
  4. Navigate to ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringones
  5. Rename the desired (.m4r) file with the extension .m4a (again, choose "Get Info" from the File menu and modify the "Name and Extension" section) and double-click it.
  6. Use iTunes to sync your iPhone.

Try this:

1. Open up a music file with Quicktime and copy the section that you want to use as a ringtone (I tried only on non-protected m4a files).

2. Open up a new Quicktime document and paste the ringtone and save to the desktop.

3. Change m4a to m4r using Command-i (or Get Info). Then open the file with iTunes (you may have to again use the Command-i to default m4r files to Open with: iTunes).

4. Quit iTunes.

5. Go to the User/iTunes Music/Ringtones folder and change m4r to m4a.

6. Restart iTunes and now Sync your new ringtones.

This works perfectly. But has anyone figured out how to remove the ones that do not work anymore from the Ringtones tab?

No working. After I click on the m4a file under the Ringtones folder (after I have renamed it back from m4r) it simply adds the file to my music library as a normal file. The file disappears from the Ringtones folder and its added to a normal folder like all other files. And of course, it doesn't sync to my phone.

Also, any idea how I can get rid of the list of ringtones from my iPhone list. What I mean is, since I have tried this a couple of times, when I click on the Ringtones tab under iPhone, I see all my songs listed twice. I would like to start from scratch. Any idea how I can clear that list so no songs show up under Ringtones??

I followed this process and created a ringtone which I synced to my iPhone. I then removed this ringtone from the Itunes/Itunes Music/Ringtones folder and unsynced it from my iPhone but this ringtone still apepars in the available ringtones tab when I connect my iPhone to iTunes. Of course when I sync now it gives me the error message that the selected ringtone was not copied because it could not be found. Why does the ringtone still appear in the Ringtones tab when i connect to iTunes and how can I remove old ringtones from this area?

Interesting, but I'm just going back to iToner. But now the ringtones that I put in prior to the release of 7.4.1 keeping showing up under the Ringtone tab, even though I removed them from the iTunes music folder (there doesn't seem to be a way to remove them from within iTunes itself). Does anything know how to remove the list?

The only way (that I know of) to get rid of the ringtones from the Ringtones tab is to re-create your iTunes Library according to the following instructions. It's actually pretty painless.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

Of course you have to first remove the files from the Itunes/Itunes Music/Ringtones folder or they will still be there after you re-create the library.

I did mine Saturday with no ill effects and all my playlists were fully intact.

You might want to first make a backup copy of the files involved with this.
