Ringtones now available for purchase through the iTunes store; walkthrough

by Ben Wilson

Less than a week after they were announced, ringtones are now available for purchase through the iTunes Store, and several new features have popped up in iTunes to take advantage of the functionality.

First of all, you can now search through your current iTunes library to search for purchased tracks that are eligible for ringtone creation. While viewing your iTunes library. Go to the "View" menu and select "View options...," then check the box next to Ringtones.

Click the "OK" button, and you'll be presented with the following dialog box:

You can now click on the ringtone category icon at the top of your music list to organize tracks by whether or not they can be made ringtones. Click on the ringtone icon next to a track to bring up the ringtone editor and start creating a tone. Unfortunately, for many already purchased tracks, the ringtone editor (which slides up from the bottom of the screen) kept disappearing during the "Accessing iTunes Store" phase. However, with newly purchased tracks, we were able to click through, agree to the iTunes terms of service, then properly edit a track and create a ringtone.

Ringtones can also be purchased from the iTunes store once a track itself has been purchased, though many ostensibly available tracks carried a grayed-out, non-clickable ringtone icon in our testing.

It looks like (as of late Monday night) Apple is still rolling out changes to the database, as new tracks are being found as eligible in our music libraries.

You'll also notice that Ringtones entry has been added to the left-hand pane under the "Library" section. This will show any ringtones you've created, as well as any items you've manually added via this trick

I got the same thing - "Song" not copied to the iPhone because you are not authorized to play it on this computer.
It is authorized and plays fine on the computer.

Same problem here, but the only song I've tried is one that was previously purchased and then discovered by the iTunes Check Songs option.

Fixed it - I reauthorized my computer - rebooted and bingo - the song transferred as a ringtone to my iPhone.

Reauthorizing did not work without rebooting.

I made and installed an iTunes Ringtone last evening from a song I already had purchased some time ago. I had to review/accept an additional SW license and I did have to 'reauthorize' my computer ('update its authorization' to be precise). But I did NOT have to reboot to then Buy the ringtone I made.

I did notice a few bugs when I tried to make ringtones from my purchased songs which were flagged as being eligible (by the Check Songs function). Some songs flagged with the 'bell' would not open in the Ringtone maker area with their waveform showing - it would just 'flash' then cancel automatically. Some other songs would open, and let you design/create a ringtone, but would then fail with an error when you tried to Buy the ringtone. Guess they're still working out the 'start-up' glitches...

Sadly I also noted that only about 5% of my purchased songs could have ringtones made from them - hopefully with will improve over time.

Tried it. Works sometimes, but it also causes my machine sometimes when making a ringtone from an available tune. I'm seeing other weirdness with iTunes 4.7.1; in particular it won't let me download some purchased tunes while it lets me have others. Very strange...

many thanks...your technique worked for me.

Now if they would authorize a few LOUD songs....any thoughts?

I don't even have an iPhone yet, but I was interested to see if the Ringtones feature would work anyway. At first it didn't show up in the left-hand pane in iTunes. Scrounging around in the iTunes preferences I found that a Ringtones option had been added to the Show items in the General tab. It was checked, apparently by default. So I unchecked it, closed and reopened the preferences and checked it again. It then popped up in the left-hand pane where it belongs. At this time, though, only a fraction of my purchased music seems to be eligible for ringtones - though all the bells are gray rather than blue, perhaps because I haven't registered an iPhone in iTunes. Even so, clicking on an authorized track brought up a purchase dialog asking for my password. I cancelled at that point, not wanting to blow 99 cents testing for a feature I don't really need. Still, it's nice to know how it works.

Okay, on a whim -- and based on some comments above -- I reauthorized my computer (didn't have to reboot) and now the Ringtones option appears!

As at least one other comment above, "Ringtones" does NOT appear in my View Options list.
I emailed iPhone Atlas about this, but so far they haven't acknowledged this issue.
