iPhone SMS storage limit: 1000

One of the more commonly reported complaints about the iPhone's SMS scheme is that there's an artificial limit on the number of text messages that can be stored. In other words, though there may be a significant chunk of free memory on the device, the amount of text messages that can be stored is capped. This can result in the message "Your SMS mailbox is almost full. Please delete some messages."

Apple has now revealed, in Knowledge Base article #306427, that the limit for SMS messages is 1000, adding:

"If iPhone indicates your SMS mailbox is almost full, just delete some SMS messages. You can delete a conversation by swiping left or right over a conversation and tapping Delete."

I like keeping a record of text messages like i do my email. Is there any info as to whether or not deleted SMS conversations are backed up during the sync and not deleted after being removed from the iPhone?

it would be nice to have some kind of SMS archive viewer in itunes that could be exported for such a purpose.

I'm with architect! Please tell me there is a way to do this! Just a .txt file export, SOMETHING! A third-party app, ANYTHING!?

I made a fairly-polished app for doing this last night, it can locate, parse and browse SMS, Call History and Notes and will optionally export them. Interested parties can drop me a line at audiobinder [at sign] mac dot com. If I get some good feedback I'll consider a release version.
