One-step method for adding third-party apps to iPhone 1.1.1, iPod Touch debuts

A new process for jailbreaking and allowing the installation of non-sanctioned third-party applications to the iPhone has debuted. It's called AppSnapp, and is unique in two respects: it automates the process on iPhones running software/firmware 1.1.1 (previous methods were multi-step), and it can be completed purely using the iPhone; no interaction with a Mac or Windows computer (as with previous methods) is required. The process will jailbreak the iPhone or iPod Touch then push Installer.app to the device, which contains a catalog of native applications that can be installed directly over a WiFi or EDGE connection (see our Applications page for more instruction on Installer.app).

In order to perform the procedure, you simply need to navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com on an iPhone or iPod Touch, then click the "Install AppSnap" button at the bottom of the page. After a few seconds, you will be presented with the "Slide to Unlock" screen (if you have your iPhone set to "lock" quickly, you may need to press the home button after the screen goes dark). After sliding to unlock, you'll have the "Installer" icon on your screen.

  1. The first thing you should do is tap the "Installer" icon, then tap "Sources" and install the "Community Sources" package.
  2. Next you'll want to install the BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH, also under "System."
  3. Finally, you'll need an application launcher. There's XLaunch under "System" and others. Note that some of these utilities require an iPhone and won't work on an iPod Touch.

For further information, see our iPhone native applications guide.

Though this particular method for jailbreaking the iPhone makes use of a TIFF overflow exploit, unlike the previous multi-step method, the developers of AppSnap claim that the process also patches the vulnerability after exploiting it.

The full feature list, from the developers:

  • Jailbreaks iPhone/iPod Touch on 1.1.1
  • Patches Springboard to load third party apps
  • Activates non-AT&T iPhones automatically, while leaving already activated phones alone
  • Fixes YouTube on non-AT&T iPhones automatically, while leaving already activated phones alone
  • Installs Installer.app v3.0b5 on the iPhone/iPod Touch
  • Fixes Apple's TIFF bug, making your device MORE secure than it was without AppSnapp.

There are even instructions for getting to Safari (so the process can be run) on a non-activated iPhone.

[Thanks to Nicholas "Drudge" Penree, one of the hackers who worked on this project, for alerting us to this new process]

Hmmmmm. After touching 'Install AppSnap' on my 1.1.1 8 GB iPhone Safari quits after a few seconds (this is on Edge) and the process seems to have failed.

This works very well. Took me 1 minute, and was ready to go.

Installed fine, however, any package I install shows up, but when launched it reverts back to home screen and does not load. The only app I have working is Summerboard. Lights Off, Flashlight, Blackjack no workie.

Have repeatedly clicked on "Install AppSnap" and Safari quickly crashes. Rebooted iPhone, same results. Restored iPhone, same results.

I have the same problem - no previous 1.1.1 jailbreak done - simply doesn't work. Safari crashes, return to home screen immediately - nothing installed, nothing appears to have changed.

I have 1.1.1 update. New One-Step AppSnap worked great.

I followed the instructions. I noticed its not the "Sources' Bottom right that your looking for. Click the 'Install Icon" second from the left on the bottom dock. Then Install the 'Community Sources' Then BDS and OpenSSH. Then LauncherX. Then SummerBoard. Not SummerBoard Old.

Those of you like me that have been away for awhile SummerBoard scrolls Left and right not Up and Down. Be sure to download a Theme for Icons.

I did restart my iPhone during the process when instructed.

Good Luck.

Same problem for me, essentially. I upgraded to 1.1.1, then went straight to the website and experienced the safari crashing thing. I tried it a couple of times, then came back here and saw that others had the same problem. I've tried re-restoring, rebooting, and giving my iphone a nice warm hug, but to no prevail. Does anyone have a fix? Do we know what causes this?

It worked, but when I clicked the Installer, the iPhone locked up and had to reboot it by pushing both the power and home buttons... Upon reboot, all seems well so far. Happy to have AppTapp back on the iPhone! Makes it SO much more enjoyable with all the new apps.

I installed it and it worked fine (with that slightly scary rebooting step already mentioned by some) and I made a donation -- my concern: as wonderful as it is that AppSnap patches the tiff vulnerability, what's to stop Apple from checking on the TIFF vulnerability in the next update and bricking any phone that's been patched?

The Safari crash when you select AppSnap is what you want to happen. I tried this with a friend's phone, mine already had a jailbreak with iNdependence, and it was successful. The Safari crash worried me at first but I waited it out. After three or four minutes of staring at the homescreen it locked and I had to "slide to unlock". The Installer icon had been added and I was now able to add apps.

I recommend adding the BSD subsystem right away because other people are saying that some apps won't run without it. AppSnap enables the hidden feature included with the iPhone that allows you to swipe to a second screen when you have installed enough apps that you have more than sixteen icons. SummerBoard is not required for this and you might want to wait for an update to install it anyway because the Alpha version has been causing some intermittent software crashes. Some have said those crashes won't happen if you don't choose "Dim Wallpaper".

I'm loading it as soon as somebody confirms that there is an uninstall process. Do you just "Restore"? Does it leave tell-tale signs of Jailbreaking (like folders, files or mods to the System software)?

I want it, but I'm not in the market to buy another iPhone if calamity strikes and the Apple Store guys say "there's a folder on your iPhone that is not factory, your phone's warranty is void".

My iphone is already jailbroken with iNdependence for 1.1.1 firmware.
To install "installer.app, can I use the same method mentioned above without
re-jailbreaking?
Thanks

Hello,

I have been following your blog since I bought my iPhone back in September. I haven?t had the guts to actually unlock my phone but only because I have always had a question it seems nobody has asked yet...

Is there ANY WAY to restore the iphone once you unlock it to BRAND NEW FROM FACTORY?

I mean, If I unlock my iphone and then I have a HARDWARE problem and want to take it to the APPLE store to have it repair, is any way to put it back as it was when you bought it without them (APPLE) to figure it out you unlocked it?

Thanks a lot
