What to do if your iPhone gets wet

Whether the culprit is a sink, toilet or rainstorm, getting your iPhone soaked in water or any other liquid is bad news. If the unthinkable happens, and you don't have insurance, your best bet is to make sure the iPhone is off, swap it down with a dry cloth, then do one of the following immediately:

  • Put your iPhone in a tub or bag of uncooked rice and let it sit for several hours (up to 2 days).
  • Place your iPhone in a plastic bag with a few silica packets.
  • Put your iPhone in a hearing aid dryer for several hours.

The point with all of these methods is to draw all moisture out of the phone as quickly as possible. Just air-drying the unit is an option, but won't act as quickly as the aforementioned methods.

If none of these tactics prove effective, and your iPhone loses significant or all functionality, an Apple FAQ states that if you own an iPhone and it requires service for any reason other than the battery (which costs $86 total to replace), Apple will repair your iPhone for the service fee listed below, plus $6.95 for shipping and handling:

  • 4GB: $199
  • 8GB: $249

Presumably this includes liquid damage, though Apple states ?Service may not be available if your iPhone has been damaged due to accident or abuse.?

We've received reports from some readers who had success having their liquid-damaged iPhones replaced free of charge by geniuses at the Apple Store, but don't count on it. This type of replacement is likely only if it can be proven that the device was damaged during routine use.

This is very funny, right after reading this i dropped my iphone in the water filled sink. so i stuck my phone in rice for 37 1/2 hours. Even though i felt as if apart of me was gone, it was the longest wait in my life, and it was my only hope of saving my iphone before i call apple and get another one, re activate it and re install all the apps; guess what, it actually worked. This stupid theory of putting your wet phone in cooked rice sucks 100% of the liquid out. Thanks iphoneatlas.com, but i am sure the **** thought of it first.

Should the rice be cooked or raw?
by saggicb April 9, 2009 8:40 AM PDT
Raw, the rice should be raw.
If you put the phone in cooked rice, it will only get more damaged - and spoil perfectly good rice
by nikon_001 October 10, 2009 6:01 PM PDT
yeah i bet it worked,.hope the "cooked rice" helped !! lolz

The problem is Apple may refuse to repair it if it has been in water. In the bottom of the headphone jack is a water tattle tail. If you look in the bottom of the jack you will see a white circle. If the iPhone has been immersed in water, the circle turns black.

Not black, it turns it RED or PINK

A few months ago, after taking out my headphones to take a call my iphone stopped making any sound at all. I was obviously in a total panic to get my phone back to full strength and searched the internet for the next 2 hours to find a solution. After trying everything on every forum i still had no sound and had to make the long trip to the apple store.

At the genius bar that i had to wait 45mins for, i was finally speaking to a so called mac "genius", after 3 trips to the office he finally came out and said my phone had water damage and they could do nothing. This is where i got very upset and had to try very hard not to make a scene! My phone had not been near any water or excessive moisture to my knowledge. After a long discussion, and being told that my only choice was to buy a new phone, i had to be taken out of the store by my friend before i beat the "genius" out of the guy for being so unhelpful!

Determined that no water had touched my phone, apple tech support was next. 2 months later (only being able to use my ?260 phone and ?45 per month contract, through a bluetooth headset) and more arguments with various apple techs and managers, i finally have a new phone!!

I know alot of people must try and con Apple into a new phone, this is not what i was after. All i wanted was what i paid alot for, to work.

I have always used Apple and will always buy their products but i think the after sales service was terrible.

Interesting, my phone got damaged and I found their service people to be a bunch of nerdo arrogant jerks. My phone isn't working right so I'm looking forward to dealing with those jerkoffs again. billions & profits & suck service.

My wife dropped her new I-Phone in the toilet. Since we were at a Mall, we ran to the nearest beauty salon and asked to use the hair dryer. We tried to remove as much water as we could.
When we got back to the hotel I searched in the Internet and found iphoneatlas.com. I followed one of the suggestions that I found. I inserted the I-Phone in a plastic bag with a couple of silica bags from the nearest shoe store and waited for 24 hours. The next day we got back home and connected the I-Phone to the electricity, he was fully charged and it is working perfectly.

I saved my wife's I-Phone thanks to iphoneatlas.com suggestions.

Wow - dropped my iPhone in a puddle of water yesterday during a sudden thunderstorm. Wrestling with wind and umbrella and grocery bags trying to get to the front door, I didn't even notice it had slipped out of my pocket. I got inside and discovered it was gone - ran back out and looked in the car - couldn't find it. My heart sank when I looked down and found it screen side down on the sidewalk in the rain in a puddle. It must have been there two or three or four minutes before I picked it up. I dried it off, opened up my laptop and googled this article. I immediately powered off the iPhone, poured some uncooked brown rice (it's all I had!) into a tuperware container, placed the iPhone screen side down and covered it with more rice. I then placed the container with the iPhone and rice in the oven with ONLY THE LIGHT turned on, and left it for 24 hours (the light on is enough to dry out the air and increase the temperature just a little).

Tonight, the iPhone is fine and working. I'm amazed!

What a life saver! I dropped my phone getting out of the car and it just happen to be pouring rain and right into a puddle it went. Thing did not work and I ordered some of the Silica Packets as listed above from SilicaGelPackets.com and got them shipped priority shipping. Arrived in 2 days and I placed all the packets around the phone in a zip-lock bag and let it sit overnight. I tried it again in the morning and the thing worked. It was a last ditch effort that I thought had no chance in working, but it sure saved me big time!

I am going to get some of these Silica Packet things to keep just in case from now on!

Thanks a ton iPhone Atlas, I owe you one now!

what did you do with your phone while you were waiting for the silica gel to arrive?
by soxfan1594 August 17, 2008 9:45 AM PDT
I was having a party with some friends, and they were sitting in the hot tub. But I wasn't in my swimsuit, and i just wanted to sit on the side with my feet in, but i slipped! so clothes on, iphone in pocket i fell in. I immediately took it out and checked it. It wouldn't turn on, so i figure, "Ok, I'll just let it sit and dry out for a while and it'll be fine". I checked it later, it turned on, but after a minute or two, the screen would fade into different colors! So I left it for the night hoping it would dry out more. In the morning it seemed fine, but I found this website, and it's sitting in a bag of rice as I type this!

My toddler dropped it inside the aquarium, i then took it out and turn it off.. I have no silica jell or whatever so i just wiped it dry, wrapped in a tissue and placed it on inside our rice box for a couple of days, I heard that rice is a good moisture absorber, and it is..

I remember my grannies put unripe fruits inside rice box's to let it ripe without rotting..

Same knowledge applies to my iPhone.. it did not rot :-)

thank you so much iphoneatlas!
i spilled a cup filled with water on my iphone last night as i was fumbling in the dark looking for my lamp switch. after assessing the damage; couldn't make calls, couldn't play songs through speaker, i submerged it in a tupperware filled with uncooked white rice overnight, then hoped and prayed for the best. it is now the morning after, and my iphone is back with no apparent ill effects. i feel as though i've just witnessed a miracle! i'm going to leave it in it's rice regeneration chamber a while longer just to be safe. thanks again!

How I fixed my iPhone after dropping in the river.

It took a little more than just drying.

This was the top hit so I'll post a response here since I didn't see my issue covered. My phone got wet in a pocket of my jacket in a rainstorm while riding a bike. It hardly got wet but obviously it was enough.

I knew enough to try to dry it out but was on the road and so just put in on the motel AC vent to get air moving over it. After a day it came back to life but wouldn't charge and was very flaky. A second day sitting in a container of raw rice had it pretty much back to working but the screen had the mottled look of water in the LCD and as soon as I got home I went to the Apple store where they peered into the headphone jack and saw the corrosion at the plug and sent me packing. I was worried that the screen wouldn't dry out or was permanently damaged but I found a few Silica Gel packets and put it in a zip lock and saw a small improvement. I took the phone home and vacuum sealed it with 4 packets of the Silica Gel desiccant and then placed the phone on the center of my gas range over the pilot light so it would stay very warm (maybe 90-100?F) and left it overnight. This worked. In 8 hours the whole screen had dried out and the phone is functioning as good as new. I think the vacuum (home food saver type) accelerated the process but the Silica Gel desiccant worked much better than the rice.

So there you have it - back from completely dead. Hope this helps someone.

well guys I went in a hot tub for 3o mins with my Iphone on. it was in my bra area of bathing suit. stupid I know I had forgot it was there. anyway it wasnt working I was in a panic it was only two weeks old.. I got some rice and put it in. checked it in three days .. Nothing.. When I got back from my trip I added fresh rice and kept it in there for two weeks. tried it nothing. got two silica packets and put it in a plastic bag with the phone.. still nothing after two days.. tried it again after another four days first letting the hair blower on it for a minute. and Bingo I plugged it in and its working as new.. went on like a champ.. Im getting my calls my speaker is working and all is as it was before.

So there is hope it might take longer to dry out the wetter you get it but it will come back. Mine did I am a happy camper tonite. I have it charging up now and Im so glad I didnt ruin it.

Thought I would share

I found this site when I Goggled "wet iPhone." In a hurry, I had thrown my briefcase in a restroom sink, and as the faucet was motion-activated, and the water flowed all over my iPhone. (I'll never do THAT again.)

Anyway, I followed the "bury the phone in rice" advice. I was skeptical, but it worked! I did allow about 32 hours, longer than recommended.

I'm a believer! Since then, I've returned to iPhoneatlas.com for other advice, and it has been right on. Thanks, iPhoneatlas.

i put my iphone in the washer & i need hopee!

so on New Years Eve, as I was getting ready to take a few friends home, my phone dropped in the toilet, and of course on instinct, I went down there and got it. I then quickly dryed it off with a towel and it went to airplane mode and flickered on and off for a while until it turned off. Then I decided to dry it with a dryer for about 2 minutes, and then set it in front of a fan for a few hours. It didn't work. So today, I am putting it in a bag of rice and praying that it will work. Do you think that my phone has a chance of life?

So, how's your iPhone now? and how long did you put it in the bag of rice?
by grateful_user January 5, 2009 9:54 PM PST
I spotted my iphone lit up while spinning in the washer on a warm bleach load. It must have been submerged for more then 20 minutes. I didn't have rice, but put it in a sock and into some clean kitty litter. The next day, I bought a bag of DampRid dessicant and put sock and phone in the DampRid with a low heater blowing. I left it this way for 5 days (during which the battery died) and with apprehensionm hooked it up to charge it. AMAZING device! It's working again. Thanks for all the help saving my phone.

The rice really does work. At first I didn't believe it but was prepared to try anything to save my i phone. I covered it in a bed of rice and kept it in a warm place. I was also advised not to turn it on for at least a week and resisted the temptation. Today - 9 days later I plugged it in and although it took a while - it started up. At first it didn't recognise the SIM but once I connected it to the computer it syncronised and I turned it off and on again and it worked. I had not taken out phone insurance and also discovered that it was specifically excluded from my house insurance - another lesson - insure your i phone

I just dropped my iPhone 3G which is less than 3 months old in the bowl...I SCREAMED! Then I acted as quick as I could. I shoke it! then I pulled the blow dryer out and blew dried it for a bit then I took it up to the charger and then I googled and found this...immediately as skeptical as I am about it- I dipped it in rice and placed it in a warm place...then I ran to my shoe boxes and pulled 3 packets of silica out and added it to the ziploc bag of rice, iphone - I HOPE THIS WORKS!!! I am very hopeful- if I dont have to buy a new iphone would be great! So I will update soon. Planning on leaving it there until Friday...its going to be hard being its like my life line.

My iphone 3g fell in the toilet one day ago (for about 3sec), it turned off then i did the thing that i probably shouldnt have done so tell me please if it was a huge mistake and can the consequences be fatal-i came home and charged it for 5 hours...and i heard that the worst thing u can do is connect ur phone to electricity when there is water left in it. i stopped charging it in 5 hours, tried to turn it on, it did. Everything worked perfectly-i could make calls, headphones worked, i could play music...then it turned off couple of times during the day but would turn on immediately again. But in the evening it turned off again and now i can not turn it on anymore. Then i was being stupid again and again connected it to computer to charge it but then i read this thing on the internet saying ur not supposed to do that and of course unplugged it immediately, put it in the bowl of rice and left under the bulb...
but my question is-how much harm have i done by charging it for these 5 hours? is it possible that it wud come back to life after that?

and for how long should i keep it in this bawl? some people say 1 overnight, some people say a week

please help me, im desperate:(

OMG I feel like I owe you my life ha!

I got my new Iphone 3GS 32gb white!!!! - thats not relevant but it is to me as its only two weeks old and was a birthday present... also its pay as you go and not insured! Its been my baby since I had it :) The love of my life LOL

So... I spilt Rose wine on it last night - wiped it dry only to find the headphone speaker didn't work! It rang fine but no sound for txt or key tapping or ipod music and i couldn't take calls unless i put the speaker on! Also my headphones worked, so it was just the headphone speaker that was obviously wet! I was crying :'(

(Interesting though as the Iphone must have two different speakers - one for the music, text, key sounds and calls and another for speaker phone and ringtone!)

I found this site and as crazy as it sounded put my Iphone in a bag of brown dried rice approx at 1AM - i've just woken up switched it on 7AM so my phone was only in the bag for 6 hours!! & its working FINE :) Fingers crossed all back to normal!!

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!! although I probably would have been able to take it back to the shop and get an exchange with my receipt as its only two weeks old I really didn't want to have all the hassle of actually doing it and explaining to the person who bought me it :)

Sorry to sound so dramatic but if you're reading this and your Iphone had just got wet please do not panic - go grab some rice asap and be patient :)

Thanks again CNET :) x
