Guide to putting DVD movies on the iPhone/iPod touch

HandBrake, a free Mac OS X/Windows utility for ripping videos from DVDs and saving them in various formats -- including MP4 files that are playable by the iPhone/iPod Touch -- has been updated to include the ability to generate iPhone-compatible anamorphic video at its full size. As such, we've put together a quick guide for moving DVD video to the iPhone/iPod touch.

 • Insert the desired DVD into your computer's optical drive
 • Download HandBrake and launch the application
 • You should be presented with a prompt to open a source. If not, select File > Open Source and choose your DVD.
 • Select Presets > Update Presets.
 • Click the "Toggle Presets" button in the upper right corner of the main window.
 • Select iPhone/iPod Touch from the resulting list
 • Click the "Start" button in the upper-left of the main window
 • Click the "Show Queue" button, then the arrow next to your movie's name. This will tell you where HandBrake is saving the resulting .MP4 file. Under Mac OS X, it's the Desktop by default. Wait until the video has been saved.
 • Launch iTunes, and select File > Import. Choose the MP4 file created by HandBrake
 • Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch and select it in iTunes.
 • Go to the "Video" tab and make sure that the "Sync Movies" box is checked, and your newly created MP4 file is selected.
 • Click the "Sync" button

Your movie should now be stored on your iPhone/iPod Touch and available for viewing.

You can save a ton of processing time (at the expense of file size) by changing H264 to regular MP4 rendering.

For Windows, I use Media Studio from Makayama. Fast and very simple to operate.

Noob alert! I'm not understanding how to get all of the DVD's chapters encoded into one movie file. Isn't that what you'd normally want to view a full length movie/show on an iPhone vs. saving every chapter separately? Thx.

s4daddio,
You have the option to rip either individual files or the whole TV Show/Movie in most cases. Even better, the iPhone now supports chapter breaks, so, in the case of TV Shows, you can skip the opening credits :p

I got wondershare dvd ripper for mac about two months ago. It works perfectly and never frustrates me. I noticed it is even compatible with Leopard and the newest MacBook Air. And I am most impressed that it supports ripping dvd movies to nearly all popular video/audio formats and it offers powerful dvd editing and dvd copy functions. Share it with you here.

so, i had 0.9.1 or possibly the previous release, and it worked great. but...when i opened handbrake last, it teased me into trying to upgrade to 0.9.2. so, i did, but not really cuz the version i had was current and 0.9.2 was only for leopard. now...when opening handbrake, it doesn't open the main window first of all, secondly, when i did figure out how to open up the main window, i try to "open source", but all i get is apple's "you can't do that" tone (sounds like a ping on a glass). i've restarted, tried downloading the current version again after removing the current application...no luck. anyone have the same issue...or better yet, a solution?

Yeah, this happened to me as well.
The fix is to turn off at launch updates in HB's
preferences.

That should fix it for you...
It did mine.

Thanks,

Nice guide, but I'd prefer using this free dvd ripper for mac to convert DVD movie for my iPhone and iPod Touch, it's easier to use than handbrake.

does anyone know how long it should take for HandBrake to be on the Reading Source screen when trying to access a DVD?
