iToner gets iPhone 1.1.3 compatibility

by Ben Wilson

Though there are many methods for using custom iPhone ringtones, few provide the simplicity affored by Ambrosia Software's iToner, which has now been updated for compatibility with iPhone software/firmware 1.1.3.

With this $15 tool, you drag and drop MP3 or AAC audio files on iToner?s window, click the Sync button, and the items are automatically moved into the iPhone?s ringtones section. It has no method for selecting a portion of the track ? you?ll need to edit the file beforehand with a sound editor (like Fission).

Other enhancements in the new release (version 1.0.6) include: support for .mp3, .mp4, .wav, and .aif files; intelligent audio processing for added ringtones; French, German, and Italian localizations and some bug fixes.

To me this seems like a waste of money. For free I can use GoldWave to simply make a 30 second or so clip of my favorite .mp3 then simply add it to iTunes and then use the program SendSong on my iPhone to send it to my ringtones. If you could make the clips in iToner I could see dishing out the cash but if you have to make them you might as well add them to iTunes and use SendSong.

That's exactly where iToner outsmarts you.

THERE IS NO 30 second limitation. F.eg. I could set an alarm and wake up with a whol song instead of this 30 seconds?. This is how it supposed to be. Satisfied customer - I was afraid the couldn't get it managed, but the did.

Apparently iToner doesn't outsmart me.

In GoldWave there is no 30 second limitation, but I instead choose to make my ringtones in the ball park of 30 seconds as my iPhone doesn't usually ring for longer than that. I could also choose which ever part of the song I want to play (in case i need to skip a boring intro), which I can't do with iToner.
