Old iPhone docks will not fit the iPhone 3G
The dock included with the first-generation
iPhone will not fit the iPhone 3G, forcing upgraders to purchase a new dock if they wish to utilize one. According to an Apple employee, "the iPhone 3G is shaped differently and doesn't fit in the same dock."
It is as of yet unclear whether or not the Apple Universal Dock connector will work with the iPhone 3G.

I mean, SURELY my brand-new Apple "UNIVERSAL" A/V connection cord would plug into my iPhone dock just like my video iPod dock, right? SURELY the iPhone dock that Apple makes you pay extra for has a video out port for all the content that is such a big part of our $500 iPhone fanboy experience, right?
WRONG. No video out port on the iPhone dock. I could NOT believe it.
No problem, I thought. I'll just plug my brand-new Apple "UNIVERSAL" A/V connection cord into the headphone jack of the iPhone. It WOULDN'T FIT the recessed port. GRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I marched across 5th Avenue to the Apple Store to vent at one of the "geniuses." He was very helpful. He had just what I needed - a "newer" iPhone-compatible "COMPOSITE" A/V connection cord.
20 minutes later and $50 lighter, I watched "Atonement" on my hotel flat-screen... but was too angry to enjoy it.
I've only had my 1G 16GB iPhone TWO MONTHS. According to the Apple home page the new 3G that comes out in a couple of weeks is "TWICE AS FAST" as my molasses-like ATT EDGE network and is also "HALF THE PRICE." Oh, and the compatible dock for the 3G iPhone will be extra.
Those oh-so-trendy shopping bags aren't cheap, fanboy.
Really? As a shareholder?
So you have problems owning part of a company that managed to create a phone that compels scores of people to stand in line FOR HOURS to drop $200 - $500, and then managed to do it all over AGAIN a year later? Maybe you're outraged as a consumer, which I was when I was wasting my morning in line today, but your inner stockholder should be smiling from ear to ear.
I understand your frustrations. However, such is the life of an early adopter...

- Well, I see both sides of the point here. But, I am afraid I relate to rluckett. I think all of Apple's customers want Apple to endure and prosper, offering a fantastic option to consumers on a much broader scale. But, come on, jacking their loyal customer base around over a bunch of absurd connections and chargers is lunacy. They are 'serving a great steak' and forcing us to eat it with a straw; it is not going to be a long-term play.

I just bought a 3G iPhone was soooooo excited to plug it into one of my MANY spare (earlier version) iPhone chargers, BUT IT DIDNT WORK.... AHHHHH! I am now collecting my 300.00 worth of misc accessories and ditching them.
Oh, and just for those of you have not gotten your 3G for HALF the PRICE. It isn't, unless you are ELIGIBLE for a phone upgrade from ATT. I paid 399.00 for my iPhone 3G yesterday.
