Users Face Serious iPhone OS 2.2 Problems

Users who have updated to iPhone OS 2.2 are facing some significant issues, including problems with third-party apps, Internet connection issues, problems deleting email and more.

Third-party Applications broken Some third-party applications will no longer function properly under iPhone OS 2.2 due to API changes and other modifications. These include a number of applications that make use of CoreAudio. These applications will generally need to be updated by their developers. However, you can try uninstalling then reinstalling applications for problems that do not involve API or other strict compatibility problems.

"Could not Connect to Internet" Some users are encountering an inability to connect to the Internet over cellular networks after the iPhone OS 2.2 update. In some cases, this issue can be resolved by switching from 3G to EDGE (or, for carriers other than AT&T, the appropriate GPRS network).

"SIM card not inserted" or PIN lock Some users are receiving an error message indicating that the SIM card is not inserted, or that a PIN lock is in place when none should exist.

The SIM recognition issue can sometimes be resolved by removing the iPhone?s SIM card, then connecting it to your computer and restoring. iTunes may then reload the iPhone software successfully, after which you can re-insert the SIM card and attempt synchronization with iTunes.

If you get the PIN lock message, try the suggestions in this tech note.

Kilometers instead of miles in Google Maps It appears that Google Maps for the iPhone now displays kilometers instead of miles for various countries. You can temporarily resolve the issue by selecting 'USA' in International settings, though this obviously introduces other problems for users outside the U.S.

Problems deleting email Some users are unable to delete emails from certain accounts, especially AOL accounts after the 2.2 update. This problem can generally be resolved by navigating Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (Your account name) > Advanced > Deleted Mailbox, then setting for the "On My iPhone" Trash for a POP account, or "On the Server" for an IMAP account.

App Store extremely slow The App Store is extremely slow after the iPhone OS 2.2 update for some users. This may be a server-side problem that Apple will resolved shortly.

this may be related to iPhone OS 2.2.

when i attempt to sync app, hiCard, iTunes returns this message:

The application "hiCard" was not installed on the iPhone "Daniel Chow's iPhone" because it could not be verified.

i've tried the following without success:
1-restoring iphone to factory default and restoring from backup
2-restoring iphone to factory default and setting up as new iphone
3-deleting hiCard and downloading again

anyone else who has hiCard with similar problem?

The App Store was slow for me this morning before upgrading so I think it's likely a server-side issue as you suggest...

I hardly see these as "serious" problems. A serious problem would be a bricked phone, no internet connectivity, no cell service, mass dropped calls... but a broken app which will probably be fixed within 72 hours is hardly serious.

Actually I'm having the SIM/PIN problem right now and it is indeed a MAJOR F*&%$ING PROBLEM, as the phone now will no longer turn on beyond the initial installation screen. However, for those having simple app problems, I agree, you'll live. Good thing Mac works with everything (except itself apparently).

I get an error when trying to send mail from my Gmail accounts. Suddenly everything is "invalid" since the upgrade. I'm on the original iPhone.

I've had no problems with the update. There is a bit of hype here calling the reported issues "serious." I only have about 35 apps, but I can't find any problems.

No problems here. Nor in any of the forums I have seen linking around. They title it "Serious iPhone 2.2 Problems". But no one has posted at Macfixit which is a bastion for whiners. That say's something. I have a 1st gen though. Maybe the 3G is hurting.

I've installed the update and everything is working fantastic. If anything apps are snappier than before. Sorry to hear about others having issues. I was in that boat after some of the earlier updates. Being able to download podcasts on the fly, is awesome.

ZERO reason to wait to update as "Serious" implies to the contrary. There is no serious issue with the 2.2 update. As for the 3rd Party Applications (which i have 23 of, all work) not functioning, contact the designer and inform them. I'm sure it'll be in their best interest to find out why.

This is nothing more than "Panic Blog"

"Users Experience iPhone 2.2 hiccups" would be a little more responsible.

Touch seemed very laggy and music and general settings both locked up and threw me back to the home screen several times. Never had anything like this happen before. Seems OK now after a couple of reboots. Maybe a 3rd part app issue?

My phone has been kicking me out of apps (including native ones) and internet and taking me home randomly. Seems like you were having a similar problem. How did you fix it?

I actually updated last night.. was surprised to see all the info saying it was released today. I have had no problems. The Google maps street view is way cool. Used it on the computer before, but mind boggling on the iPhone!!

All A-OK here to. I was extremely careful though and followed this protocol:

1) synch phone in OLD iTunes
2) download iTunes update, restart computer
3) Power cycle iPhone
4) Synch iPhone with new iTunes
5) Update iPhone to 2.2
6) Power Cycle iPhone
7) Re-synch iPhone

I know it's a lot of steps and possibly going too far, but everything went smoothly and only took me 20 minutes. I was out the door and on time for work!

with the exception of failing to install hiCard, everything else seems to be running relatively smoothly.

although Safari still seems to crash when loading (relatively slowly) wsj.com or even apple.com, but not as often as before. however, i notice some lag in loading some applications. for example, SMS's screen remains blank for about a second or two before displaying; and when i attempt to type, the initial response has a lag of up to 4 seconds.

nothing relatively serious, but inconvenient enough to take some fun out of using the iphone. but i hope they'll be addressed soon because i didn't have these to complain about prior to version 2.1.
