iPhone OS 2.2: Saved Image Bug

iPhone user, Brandon Lain has posted an image flickr about the discovery of a bug in the iPhone OS 2.2 when saving photos. According to Brandon this was confirmed by another iPhone user, Scott Johnson, who indicates that the iPhone is indeed "upscaling a thumbnail of the downloaded image."

Apparently, under iPhone OS 2.1, images saved from an email message or website that were larger than the native resolution on the iPhone were scaled down, with a resample resulting in a clear image on the screen. iPhone OS 2.2, however, does not perform the resample, and therefore yields a fuzzy and pixelated image.

The site goes on to detail how you can recreate this bug yourself:

"Try this out yourself. On your computer, resize one copy of an image to no more than 480 pixels on the long side and a second copy to about 640 pixels on the long side. Email both to your phone, and save them to your camera roll by tap-holding on the images in mail then selecting Save 2 Images."

Next, open the Mobile Photos app and see the results for yourself. You'll note, like Brandon that the 480 pixel image will appear normally, but the 640 pixel image will be fuzzy and pixelated.

Yeah, this is VERY frustrating. It's also messing up some image and photography apps like CameraBag.

Here's a link to my findings (not sure why my name is linked to Brandon's sample image above):

the problem appears to be with images which are 800 or 1600 wide
(i have heard but not confirmed 400,600,800,1200,1600)

I created a 1600x1200 image on the PC and emailed it to the iphone.
Then in iphone, i saved the image from email to the camera roll.
Then when i look at the image in camera roll, it is blurry.
However if i sync it back to the PC it is full resolution back on the PC.
This hints that it is a bug in the iphone display s/w rather than the saving s/w

Now, the fun part
I repeated the test with a 1602x1202 image (created on PC emailed to iphone)
this time when i saved it from iphone email to the camera roll,
it was NOT blurry.

So the problem is definately related to the image size, but not a case of all large images.

I suspect this is why we are also hearing of some users seeing the problem in saves from safari and others dont.
I would guess saving images which are the "magic" 800 or 1600 would have the problem, but other more "irregular sizes" are okay.

Hi, I have a jailbroken iPhone OS 2.2.1. A few days ago i saved some pictures from my email message. Those pictures were larger and were actually taken by a iphone 3gs. After that i noticed my old pictures which were taken before by my own iphone were fuzzy and the size was skrunk from 52kb to 16kb. I wanna reset my iphone but not sure if this will work. Is there any solutions to fix this problem now? It is very irritating coz it means i cannt use my iphone to take pictures any more.
