iPhone OS 2.2 WiFi Issues Persist; Potential Fixes

Perhaps the most widely reported problem after disappearing applications is one in which WiFi connectivity fails after the iPhone OS 2.2 update. Users continue to report these problems with frequency. A sampling of reports from iPhone Atlas readers:

  • "Ever since this last update for the iPhone 3G, I've had a problem connecting to ALL WIFI hotspots, including my own secure router at home (linksys router). HELP!! My version is 2.2 (5G77) and modem firmware is 02.28.00 if this helps."
  • "I have an iPhone 3g (unjailed) and after the release of firmware 2.2, my iPhone froze and after hard reboot, I just was unable to connect to wifi, whatever the wifi is: protected, open. I tried hard reboot, reinstall, "forget my settings" or what so ever, nothing worked."
  • "My iPhone 3G will pickup the right IP address of my router, but I cannot connect to the internet."
  • "My iPhone had no issues with finding WiFi networks until I upgraded to 2.2. Now I cannot find any WiFi networks."

In some cases, "forgetting" the currently configured network and then reconfiguring it can resolve the issue. Other potential fixes include:

  • Navigate to Settings > Reset and choose "Reset Network Settings"
  • Switch the router to WPA2-Personal/AES security settings
  • Remove all spaces from the WPA pass phrase
  • Remove all security from the router until a stable connection is attained then reconfigure the security

Some users have resorted to a downgrade to iPhone OS 2.1. Apple Discussions poster James DeRosa writes:

"And just another confirmation... I just downgraded to 2.1 on the same phone, same router, same everything.. WiFi is snappy again. Girlfriend's is still 2.2 and WiFi stutters and takes forever. EDGE is actually quicker. Not a bandwidth type of faster, but quicker and more reliable response time."

For downgrade instructions, see our previous coverage.

Trust me, there are no potential fixes. Apple didn't recognize this issue when it happened with their first major update and they are not going to recognize it now. If you live close to an Apple store, get a new phone.

I have a linksys router WRT54GL and and iPhone running 2.2.
Had the same issue with WiFi @ home. All other devices except my iPhone would stay connected.
I changed the firmware of the router from 4.30.5 to Tomato and WiFi on my iPhone works like a charm...
not sure if all of you can benefit from this ... but it beats getting another phone and running the risk of having the same problem with the new phone.

cheerz,

I'm using an iPhone 3G, and just updated the firmware to 2.2.1. I was going bonkers on my router (Linksys WRT54G) trying to find a config that the phone liked, but couldn't get anything to work. For that matter, I could get no wifi hotspots to work either. None would EVER even show up in the list of availables. I found this article and this step fixed all my issues:

Navigate to Settings > Reset and choose "Reset Network Settings"

However, the correct path to get there is:

Navigate to Settings > General > Reset and choose "Reset Network Settings"

Thanks for posting this! I was beginning to believe some of the horror stories I had heard on the forums about wifi chips going toast.

Hi Guys, my iphone 3G had perfect wifi reception for the first 4 month i have owned it. Yesterday it stopped picking up any wifi networks at all???
I tried many things suggested, but nothing helped. I saw one guy had put his phone in the fridge, so i thought why not. After about 20 mins, i took it out and it instantaneously connected to wifi, this lasted about 10 mins. I can put it in the fridge and it will connect every time, but once the phone has got back to room temp the connection dissapears again??
Any ideas if this can be fixed...i'm in China so no chance of exchanging the unit.

I had the same problem few days ago just after updating to FW 2.2.1. I did everything possible to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back but all with no use. My speculation is that Apple did this in purpose so people will have to use their 2 and 3G to connect to Internet instead of the Wi-Fi, I?m saying this because the problem has been there for 5 months now and Apple has not released a single statement to address the issue. I really hate being trapped by such unethical behaviour.

Hi,
I'm in Sweden and I have experienced the very same with my IPhone 3G. It worked the first months but now It can't even connect to my WIFI at home. Since it worked sporadically before I suspected that Apple had a deal with my Cellular provider, you know, make the customer think they've got WIFI and then charge them for 3G or EDGE once the WIFI disconnects after a few minutes. It makes sense if you don't have any ethics at all, but that's not the image Apple wants to send to us consumers. No, I think this is just some programming that is lacking and that someone haven't been able to prioritize over in California. I count 3 updates now to the OS and it just keeps getting worse. My cellular provider keeps sending me bigger subscription fees so I guess they're not going to alert Apple. Who will?

Hi I am from India

I recently updted my iphone to 3.1.2 version. After that wi-fi suddenly stopped to work after 8 months of its purchase. I took it to the Airtel center who is the official partner of Apple in india to take care of iphone support.

They took the phone from chennai to bangalore and finally told me that the iphone is liquid damaged. I can swear that i have taken care of my iphone more than like a kid. But somehow, Apple / Airtel rejected my plea and voided my warranty

I warn all the users of iphone that Apple tends to cheat people by providing some bug in ver 3.1.2 software. Once i put that software, somehow the wi-fi stopped working completely and says "Cannot scan for networks"

I feel very low and cheated up by Apple. I do not have the mind to give Rs.12500 to get a refurbished phone, after spending Rs.32000 just 8 months ago.

I cannot forgive Apple for this matter, as I trusted Apple's products and they are cheating people like this and playing with the humane feelings.

Raje
