iPhone Does Not Ring, Calls Go Straight to Voicemail

by CNET staff

Several users have experienced an issue in which the iPhone 3G does not ring and calls are, instead, routed straight to voicemail. Of course, this can occur if the iPhone is off or the signal is weak or non-existent. However, several users have reported this behavior even with a full available signal.

Among the user reports from this Apple Discussions thread:

  • "Around November 15th, I started seeing some of the same problems on my iPhone 3G (calls not coming through, voicemails & texts getting delayed, unable to make calls / send texts)."
  • "It seems totally random when it happens to me. On the one hand, several calls will come through as expected, no problems. Then there will simply be a "voice message" tone and the on-screen message saying that someone had left me a voice message - while the phone sits next to me, fully charged, silent."
  • "Just wanted to say that I have the same problem... Phone with good signal but no ring and straight to voicemail."

Possible solutions for this issue:

  • Turn off Bluetooth in Settings
  • Turn off WiFi
  • Turn off 3G
  • Replace your SIM card (requires contacting your provider)
  • Reset the iPhone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I can not tell you how many times this happens to me in a given week. Sometimes the when the call goes right to voicemail, I won't even have a missed call show up in my call log.

My text are delayed by a minimum of 10 minutes on most messages sent to my phone. I'll have full signal strength. I can be on 3G, Edge or Wifi and this happens.

It's very frustrating to say the least when you've got an appointment and someone says they'll call you 10 minutes before and you miss the call and then have a voice message 20 minutes after the call comes in.

This has also happened to me often over the past week. Sounds like an ATT problem.

Perhaps you folks are receiving calls from an application called "slydial."

If this is the case, it's probably being used by people who don't want to talk person-to-person but have to relay information out of obligations. It's also possible that there's nothing wrong with your iPhone, only ignorance of applications that make things like this possible.

slydial is a free voice messaging service that connects you directly to someone's mobile voicemail. slydial is a service of MobileSphere: http://www.slydial.com/

phone does not ring or give notices for voicemail or texts. if turned off and back on again, all missed notices pop up within a minute. very annoying! nothing to do with slydial. at least with my iphone, which btw was replaced by apple because of this and the new one does the same exact thing!

I wish people would not automatically jump to the conclusion that it is an issue with the iPhone itself.

There are many possible reasons why incoming calls don't get through on mobile networks ranging from faults at the switching center, congestion on signaling links, overload on cell sites and poor coverage conditions.

The fact that the call goes to Voicemail simply means that the system did not get a response within a set period when the mobile was paged. In fact it is perfectly possible that your mobile recognised the incoming call but because of the radio conditions at the time, failed to be 'heard' by the network when it tried to respond. Be thankful that the VM system was there to catch the call - without that you would never know that someone had even tried to call you.

It is worth remembering that no mobile network (or fixed network) in the world runs with a 100% call set-up success rate - that is a simple fact. I live in Europe and work in the cellular industry and I see exactly the same issues from time to time both on my own mobile (incidentally not an iPhone) and on calls that I make to other mobiles.

In summary, if it happens once in a while accept it as the norm. If it happens many times in a short period or in a particular area it is most likely to be a system fault. Such faults normally get noticed by operations staff quite quickly but it does not hurt to raise a customer complaint if the issue persists.

Of course I do not rule out an issue with the phone itself, but in my experience that is likely to be pretty well down the list of possible causes.

I couldn't agree more. I have been a long time ATT (aka cingular) user with many phones prior to the iphone and it has always done this really annoying thing. Seemingly independent of the phone. Someone will eventually make a fortune suing ATT for these "more bars in more places" ads. Maybe i get more bars, but I also get more dropped calls, straight to voicemail and my personal favorite straight to vmail the next day. Every time I see a ATT ad, I think yes that is frustrating, wait I have ATT!!!

I had this happen on my 1st generation iPhone. All calls went to voicemail, the phone never rang. I could not solve the problem without an extreme measure: reverting my iPhone to the original firmware, then upgrading to the current version. It was essentially reformatting my iPhone to version 1.0, then upgrading as if it was new out of the box.
It is possible the iPhone was defective, I had to have it replaced by Apple a month or so later since the EDGE hardware died. Just thought I'd mention this possible firmware fix if anyone is truly desperate. But note to non-3G iPhone owners: calls and voicemails can not be received while you are using the EDGE (e.g. surfing the web).

I would suggest moving "Reset the iPhone" to the top of the list. It may or may not address the issue, but it would avoid someone disabling their Bluetooth, wi-fi and 3G settings if they're reading the list verbatim.

This EXACT problem just started for my iPhone 3G 12/16/08 around noon EST in Atlanta, GA. Have only had the phone for 1month. 3G outgoing calls and data is fine. Only incoming calls randomly dont ring the handset. Everything works fine on EDGE. Called ATT who didnt see anything wrong, so they forwarded my to Apple who was equally clueless. They had me do a restore, but it didnt fix anything. Considering this happened so suddenly, I think it is a ATT issue more then a Apple issue.

One commenter noted that this started happening around Nov 15. That is the same time that I began experiencing missed calls on my iphone. Interestingly, I will sometimes get a missed call note and sometimes I will not. This happens when the phone is charged and has good reception. Today, I received a note that I have a new voicemail even though the phone never rang. It showed that just this moment I received a voicemail that was sent 2 hours ago. This happens all the time. Another way this occurs is that I will receive a message from a person as I hang up the phone with that same person, such that the system won't register the call when it comes in or when the phone is successfully connected to the network, but after everything else is done. Apple replaced my phone for this reason and the replacement behaves the same way. I wonder why this started happening in the middle of November. Is it an issue with the iphone 2.2 software or a change on ATT's network? Either way, this is the most expensive phone service I have ever had and it is the least effective. I give the iphone a two thumbs down.

This exact scenario just happened to my iPhone on Friday..I have been on the phone with AT&T and Apple support for hours today and yesterday. I have had to go to an AT&T store and replace my SIM card, and that didn't work, I went to the Apple store and had my phone replaced, I tested it in the store and it worked fine..when I got home I restored the data to my phone and it is now happening again. I am at a loss and have no idea what to do next.. (P.S. The calls will come through on 3G, not Edge).

The no ring problem made me nuts. Missed some really important calls and lost free lance work as well as a teaching gig.
Then I came here. The 3g thing is what worked. Turned it off, and my phone finally rang. It was a job.

This also happened to me for a couple of days in the UK (perfect signal - and happened with and without 3g signal).

The 'Reset' thing worked for me!

This problem is still plaguing iPhones (as of June 2009). I own a brand new 3GS in Washington,DC, and following many leads (including two fresh Restores!), the only thing that fixed this problem was turning off 3G -- not an acceptable solution!

Many other users from all over the world are also experiencing this problem. It's all over the Apple discussion site:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1728634
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2043243

Apple needs to fix this ASAP. It's not acceptable that their sophisticated gadget fails to work as a basic phone!!

it started happening to me about a week ago, when i upgraded to OS 3.0 . i had full signal (and most of the times i was not in 3g) and i could not receive any calls or texts although i could make calls and send messages just fine. everyone who called me told me that it said that my phone is probably turned off but i was right next to me and turned on. it happened at random times and did not last too long but it was pretty anoying. i just turned of the wi fi and then did a reset and it was working fine for some mins but then it happened again... i will try contacting my phone carrier or apple support to see if i can do anything. as i believe it is more of an apple issue, they should do something about it as soon as possible because it makes the iphone really inconvenient(i've had my sim card in my old device for a week now and i dont really like doing that when i have payed almost 500 euros for the iphone)

The same here too, tried all the tricks and no luck. I just hope I am not complaining about it for weeks like some of you.

Started happening to me 2 weeks ago. My phone didn't ring at all for a week. I called AT&T and they increased the signal length to the max (30 sec.). I started getting rings for some calls--other calls still don't ring. At the same time, I've noticed that my voice mail doesn't register until 4 hours later. C'mon Apple and AT&T-- get it together!!!

Iphone 2g sporadically receives calls, if at all. Totally unacceptable!

Apple, resolve this please.

I had this same problem. Took it to the Apple store and was told I had a bad download. The "genius" bar guy told me when I updated my software for my phone, some received a bad upgrade and some didn't and that his phone did the same thing. So he erased all my data, restored my phone and told me to not use my backup restore on my computer but to basically manually input everything all over again. This method may or may not work for some of you but it wont hurt to try. He went on to say its just like a computer and it gets bad software, ect. I did notice my problem didn't start until the new major software update came out

Hey guys. I THINK I'VE FOUND A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. I went over to AT&T and explained to them what was going on. The sales associate told me that the sim card might be failing. (failing) She also said that most of her fellow sales associates had iphones but were not experiencing any difficulties with their phones going straight to voice message. She immediately replaced the sim card and, boom! the phone rang. The call was from a friend of mine who've been trying to call me for weeks and all his calls went straight to voice message even though my phone was on. So far I've been receiving calls and the phone rings like it should instead of going straight to VM. I wasn't charged anything for the sim card. Hope this helps.
