iPhone apps of the week

I hope everyone had a great holiday! Coming back after the break has been a whirlwind for all of us at CNET. With the one-two punch of Macworld here in San Francisco and the simultaneous Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we've been working around the clock to bring you the latest news and announcements from both trade shows.

I was lucky enough to walk the show floor at Macworld and although it wasn't as exciting as previous years, there was still plenty of excitement. Some highlights include software launches, third-party hardware, and--of course--Mac, iPod, and iPhone accessories. Overall, Macworld was as crowded as ever with many vendors excited for the future of Apple, but some were wondering what the future will hold for the show now that the company will no longer be participating. I guess we'll have to wait until next year (the dates are already reserved for 2010), but it's a shame that the main reason for the show will no longer be in attendance.

I've added many apps to my iPhone over the past few weeks to pass the time during holiday travel, and--judging from many companies at Macworld--the new apps and games are going to keep on coming.

This week's apps include a budgeting application and a game so we can start the New Year off right by continuing to be responsible while we have fun in 2009!

Squirrel

Enter your transactions as you go to stay on budget.

Squirrel helps you stick to your New Year's resolution of managing your money by helping you keep track of all your transactions on your iPhone. Simply enter your current balance and stay on top of transactions by entering new data as it happens. Squirrel gives you complete flexibility for naming your transactions and categories. What's more, you can download Squirrel for your Mac so you can keep your finances in sync on your iPhone and at home.

Rolando

Navigate your Rolandos through large colorful levels with lots of moving parts

Rolando ($9.99) was released during the holidays and may be one of the best games yet for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Featuring smooth cartoon graphics, jazzy music, and cute sound effects, this platformer challenges you to get your Rolandos safely to the exit of each level. Tilt your iPhone to get them rolling and utilize several touch-screen motions to guide your Rolandos past obstacles while you avoid baddies called Shadow Blocks. As you progress, you'll need to manage more Rolondos and use creative methods to get past sticky situations. Overall, Rolando is one of the most polished games I've seen on the iPhone and I recommend it highly for those looking for a great platform-type game.

What are your favorite apps? Does Squirrel have enough features for your budgeting needs? Got any good games for me to check out? Let me know in the comments!

Hi Jason,
What's the buz on SoonR. I've been trying for a week to get it to work on my iPhone with no positive results. The Demo's are great about telling you what it will do but not very helpful when it comes to how. Tech support seems confused. It's free so I hate to complain. Love the concept. Just wondering?!. Hi Terrell,
We're happy to help out--please write to support (at) soonr.com and we'll do our best to get you up-and-running.
Best regards,
Steve (at Soonr)

Most people can get Soonr up and running in only a few minutes, so something must have gone awry in your install. I see that Steve from Soonr has responded and he should be able to get you going in no time.

Rest assured that it is easy to use. In fact the folks at InfoWorld said "It's ridiculously easy to use and intuitively organized." http://weblog.infoworld.com/mobile_pulse/archives/2009/01/new_iphone_app.html

Once you get over the hump I am sure you'll have the same experience.

Good luck and please get back to us. (I am with Soonr too)

Yea, I am not sharing anything on any cloud that is of any importance at all. This "cloud" thing isnt secure at all. Do you know the folks who are allowing access to - and storing of - your data? You dont. They could be anyone, anywhere and they may not have your privacy in mind.

I'd be seriously careful with anything "sharing" related these days. Its bad enough that our personal information (healthcare, financial, etc) has been sold to the lowest bidder in India and China and elsewhere. These people have no regard for our data. And dont try to defend outsourcing of our jobs and data - its pure BS and should be outlawed.

Google Docs and Salesforce.com and all that other junk about SaaS is really nothing more than taking a huge gamble with your information. Its just not worth it.

Jason - while squirrel may be a decent app, I would hardly give it attention since I already have Mint.com's application. It is head and shoulders superior to squirrel by automatically tracking you transactions. Were there really no other apps that introduced something intriguing this week? Squirrel is a yawner in my opinion -- get Mint.com!

You are so right, dnrbnx. Mint.com is fantastic! Thanks for the tip!

I like Crystal Defenders, They need to make Final Fantasy Tactics for the iPhone. I dont really think it would be that difficult, it would be perfect for the iPhone. Fieldrunners is good too as is Bejeweled like always.

Alphabetic is a fantastic new game on the iphone/ipod touch, its simple but looks beautiful and is very addictive, basically a wheres wally type game but you have to find the letters of the alphabet as quick as possible. Its good fun and games can be as short as2-3 minutes which makes it good for that quite moment.

I fully realize this is off topic, but what, might I ask, would you recommend as a calendar replacement program. I currently use Agendus on my Palm powered device (it's a Sony Clie...and yes I still use it because I just love Agendus!). I would like to just carry one device...but the iPhone Calendar is seriously lacking when compared with the functionality of Agendus. I know there was some talk for awhile about Agendus being developed for the iPhone...but that seems to have died on the vine. Consequently, I haven't found a suitable replacement for the iPhone (that does assume one actually exists) but in all fairness I haven't looked that hard. It's WAY too time consuming to try and find unknown applications in the appstore on iTunes.

I welcome your thoughts on this query.

I might be a little closer to being convinced toward trying Squirrel if, on the screen shot, "Withdrawal" was spelled correctly.
