iPhone OS 2.2.1: Battery Drain

Dozens of users have reported dramatically reduced battery life under iPhone OS 2.1.1. A sampling of iPhone Atlas readers:

  • "Ever since I upgraded to 2.2.1 I have noticed that the battery life of my iPhone has significantly diminished. For example, my phone might have full/near-full battery charge at night, but in the morning it is down to 10%. Before the upgrade there would be almost no battery loss over night. I'm finding that I have to recharge it 2-3 times a day even with little use."
  • "Now the battery indicator never goes down. This gives the impression that there is better battery life, but instead, the battery dies instantaneously without warning.
  • "I notice my battery not lasting as long as before the update."

Potential fixes include:

Drain the battery completely Use your iPhone until the battery dies completely (indicated by a battery icon appearing on the screen when the sleep/wake button is pressed), then fully recharge the device. It appears that the full discharge may reset circuitry that prevents a full charge from occurring, despite iconic indication of a full charge.

Turn off location services It appears that the Maps application and some third-party applications that use GPS functionality fail to power down the necessary hardware components when they are no longer in use. Navigate to Settings > General > Location Services and turn these services off when you are not using Maps or another location-enabled app.

Turn off Push then restart The iPhone 3G's Push functionality for Exchange and Mobile Me accounts can destroy battery life. Turn this option off in "Settings" then restart your iPhone by powering it off then on.

Restore the iPhone with original settings Launch iTunes and select the second option in the "Version" section on the Summary page for your iPhone. This restore process will erase your iPhone software and data, including all settings, which can be restored later via iTunes.

I believe the headline was supposed to refer to 2.2.1, not 2.1.1.

I agree. So much for CNET's proof-reading.

I am experiencing many of the problems written about, perhaps posting a check box list of all reported problems would help gather everything up to be submitted to Apple.

I can't see it being long before Apple release 2.2.2! This 2.2.1 is the first update of countless, that I've had a problem with. I thought I was seeing things this morning having gone to bed at 4AM with a fully charged phone, to then watch it die around 9AM with no battery. Sods law I didn't have a data cable to plug the phone into my mac in work to charge it up! :@

I leave the 3G off and leave edge on only and my battery with normal use everyday is lasting me 4 days now it's the 3G, I notice when even it says we have full bars of 3G we really don't because it takes forever for web pages to load and forevere for mail to recieve 2 messages, so I think the 3G is really looking for reception the entire time and I believe thats whats draining the battery so much, I am runing on 2.1.1 and I havent had a problem.

Just to add to my comment before...Having turned off location services in the settings menu, my battery life has returned to normality. It's not that much of a prob having GPS turned off...but it would be nice to see a timely fix from Apple, all the same.

Weird, none of my downloaded apps are working anymore since the update. All the default apps are fine, but all the others i click on to start, it goes to a black screen like its going to startup the application, then just quits and goes back to the desktop. anyone else having the same problem?

Since update 2.2.1 I too am having the battery life problem. Also more often than not callers are going directly to my AT&T voicemail. My phone doesn't ring and it can sometimes take up to an hour for the voicemail notification to arrive. This could mean that Verizon and AT&T are not playing nice, but for some reason AT&T is having trouble locating my phone even when signal strength is excellent. Anyone else have this problem?

After updating to v2.2.1, I'm seeing the opposite. I reported to Apple via iPhone Feedback page that I was getting overnight draining on my 1st-gen iPhone while roaming internationally (in Sao Paulo).

It seems that it was switching back & forth between ATT roaming carriers here every 5 min (TIM Brasil, Claro, Vivo, Oi).

The v2.2.1 seems to have fixed it for me. Overnight standby uses 2-3% charge...like normal.

2.2.1 is a horrible upgrade (Downgrade), batter life was supposed to get better, it is 200% worse.
Avoid this upgrade at all costs

I have had the same problem with version 3.0 on iphone 3G. Wireless was bad with 2.2.1 and now has stopped altogether on version 3.0 - I have reset settings, restored entire phone, but nothing works - HELP
