If you blinked again, you might have missed it: several days after Apple released an update to the iPhone OS 3 beta, hackers have already jailbroken the OS 3 beta 3 release.

A new version of QuickPWN for Windows only (direct download link) has been released. This version should work with all versions of the iPhone or the iPod Touch. We have not yet tried the jailbreak, but our sources have not reported any trouble with the hack. (As usual, however, download and use QuickPWN at your own risk.)

Jailbreaking is competitive in the hacking community. The Dev Team, the favored jailbreak provider, has an opinion and some words of warning about hacks like this.

Yawnnnn. Is this news? Why even feed in to jailbreaking? It's ripping off the people who are legitimately developing apps for the iPhone. Do you run stories about people who have cracked into safes or stolen identities, too?

Its not ripping anyone off, you can still download and purchase apps from the store or get open source ones from Cydia. If you haven't tried u have no idea what the phone is really capable of.

alexacker: you're best commenting on things you know something about. all jailbreaking does is open the iphone/touch to more features and app choices. period.

For example, I have stacks on my pod touch (just like OS X). As well, the current temperature is shown at the top of my screen without having to open the weather app. Both are things that apple doesn't natively support but I find very very handy!!

And I didn't rip off any developer because none of the developers in the app store make anything like those!

I actually think that cnet should report more on jailbreaking and some of the options that it gives people.

This is officially the dumbest comment I've ever read on CNET -- and that's saying something!

To answer your question, cnet has run stories about people who have stolen identities. Why would you even ask?

What this has to do with jail breaking is beyond me. You need to do it to run your iPhone on T-Mobile which is usually a little slower but many prefer their data plan.

hahahah look's like you work @ apple, but still i do agree you should talk about the legit apps, after all this is CNET, a mainstrem website not some ramdom devteam blog ;)

Then why comment on a story that has no meaning to you....

@d3vildog69

Um, maybe because it's an opinion? Lighten up. It obviously DOES have meaning to him in that he disagrees with installing it.

Also, are you 12? Putting 69 in your username is incredibly childish.

@tmeesseman

"Um, maybe because it's an opinion? Lighten up." ...... lol.

Just playing d3vil's advocate (yes, bad pun),
<sarcasm> what if d3vildog69 is actually 69? Or was born in 69 making them 39, possibly 40, depending on the month they were born? </sarcasm>

Cool! When/if I get a iPhone I'll definitely jailbreak it. I really don't like the idea that Apple decides what to put on the App store. I mean it is their store, but some of the things they've pulled or denied are just stupid.

Why would you install the iPhone beta just to jailbreak it?

Because it's there, my friend. Because it's there!
by jakemochas April 21, 2009 5:30 PM PDT
seriously!?!? because that means that you will be able to jailbreak it when it is final! it means more freedom and more ability to do what you want!
by tcr071 April 21, 2009 5:44 PM PDT
You can jailbreak OS 2.1 which is a lot less buggy and sluggish than 3.0 is. I can see a point in making sure Apple hasn't built anything into the latest beta build that blocks jailbraking but I cannot see a logical reason one would install the beta OS and then jailbreak it.

If its your thing then do it. If its not your thing then dont. The really stupid part to me is when people complain about a company having control of the content that their product delivers. Its you retards that go and do somehting stupid with your peice of tech, whatever it may be. Break it by doing so, then go have a hissy fit and try to give the company bad press when they wont fix or replace it for you because u were an idiot to try some of the ridiculous crap you tried in the first place. Remeber, this stuff is FREEWARE, so you get EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR. If it works out for you and its the bestest thing ever since sliced bread, then Kudos. If it breaks your phone and you were specifically warned about the not doing exactly what brought you to this point then you got what u deserved.

I have a friend who presently has his Macbook in with apple care and is ******** about how long its taking to get it back(for the third time) because he keeps trying to install unsupported software and doing all kinds of other stupid crap to it to break it. Needless to sy anytime he tries to even mention it to me he is immediatly shushed. He also is currently barred from ordering any replacement phones from his carrier for abuse of the replacement progam. He refuses to buy cases for his phone and drops them every five mins in addition to trying to install all kinds of unsupported junk on his phone ALA his macbook. Friend or not, stupid is as stupid does.
