SlingPlayer for iPhone release imminent: $30, Wi-Fi only

The long-delayed SlingPlayer for iPhone will be hitting the iTunes App Store in the next 24 hours--but the software will only stream video over Wi-Fi, not AT&T's 3G data network. The restriction is a big blow to the usability of the software, which allows owners of Slingbox set-top boxes to stream their home TV in real-time to anywhere in the world.

The SlingPlayer app will cost $29.99--expensive for iPhone apps, but the exact same price as previous iterations of the SlingPlayer Mobile apps available for Windows Mobile, Palm OS, BlackBerry, and Symbian handhelds. SlingPlayer Mobile should work on all existing iPhones and iPod Touch models. Also, while Sling had indicated that the iPhone player would only work with the Slingbox Solo, Slingbox Pro, and Slingbox Pro-HD models, the company has now indicated that it will work with legacy models as well--though tech support will only be available for the aforementioned trio of models.

We'll have a more in-depth look at the software and an updated video soon. But so far as we can tell, the software hasn't changed very much since the beta version was unveiled earlier this year. Thus, Tom Merritt's hands-on video (embedded above) gives you a very good idea of what you'll be getting with SlingPlayer Mobile. (Update: See Jeff Bakalar's hands-on review and video.)

So, what do you think? Is the dearth of 3G access a deal-killer? Or will you be picking up a Slingbox just so you can stream video to your iPhone or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi? Sound off below.

Update (5/13/2009, 8:40am): The SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone app is now available.

The no 3g thing is definitely a bummer, but it still has it's uses. If you're in an airport or in a plane, you could hop on and watch a show or two.

I would rather use ORB.com's service which works with 3G.

you don't need an app to use slingbox. you can just use the internet site. i don't kow about iphones, but it worked decent on a samsung omnia for verizon months ago. i would guess it should work the same on any internet accessible phone.

I have a Hava instead of a Sling and it works just fine on my Windows Mobile device over Verizon's 3G network.

Is this limitation by Sling just an iPhone limitation or does it have similar limitations on other platforms also?

No its probably a negotiation with At&t , Apple , and Sling to make it Wifi only since At&t is probably complaining about network congestion.

I guess you guys without a slingbox can try to make yourselves feel better with those other services but it still isnt the same as having worldwide access to your HDDVR. I have a slingbox pro HD and I love it. I travel alot and am able to watch live games in HD everywhere I go, not to mention all of my recorded content. The 3g is definitely a bummer but we all saw it coming.

Jailbroken phones actually have the ability to trick applications into thinking they are on wifi when they aren't. Would be perfect for this app.

Sad... so very sad... I bought the slingbox when they announced they were creating the iphone app.
I love the iphone for it's capability, but it is such a shame that a great device is crippled by at&t in this case and by apple in so many other cases.
Why allow 3g streaming on the most popular devices (there are still many more bberry's out there than iphones), but not on the iphone.
I know I'll end up buying it, but I am disapointed.

If I'm not mistaken, no app can offer up 3G network private video streaming, under the Apple SDK License Agreement. Why are so many acting like this is a surprise, or even worth discussion in this context?

Having a mobile device such as the iPhone, mobile means 3G, I would not invest in the sling box nor the mobile version until ATT gets their act together and upgrades or when Verizon comes on board and offers the iPhone so there is actual competition! We will all benefit then with the best service and devices! Can't wait!

This is simply AT&T greed, they charge you $10 more per month for 3G service but you are not allowed to used it. How many simultaneous people do they actually have a slingbox and stream their home content. As for Slingbox, if it included 3G access I would have considered paying the $30 but since its only wifi, its maybe worth $20. Sling can easily charge the additional $10 once we move to the 3.0 iPhone OS.

The only value for the Slingbox application on the Iphone is through 3g only. Especially when you are paying over $220 for the Slingbox + Sling software. That's not cheap. Wi-fi at home, at a coffee shop, at the airport does not make sense - i would rather watch tv stations on a big screen tv instead in those areas. At&t thinks that we will use excessive bandwith using the application 24/7. In reality we don't have all day to watch tv on a device with a small screen. For the average user - i don't see anyone using it more than 1-2 hours a day and usually not all at one sitting. The average user wants to use it as backup tv - that is to view tv whenever a tv cannot be accessed to watch an important news, entertainment, or sports event. I'm very disappointed with At&t. They make us pay $30 a month for unlimited data but restricts it's Iphone users. Slingmobile works on my Samsung Blackjack and other phones but not the Iphone 3g. Apple should consider doing business with another wireless phone carrier. Someone who will give people what they really want.

This is directly from Sling on May 12, 2009

SlingMedia: Unfortunately , all the keys purchased for other phones and PDAs are not transferable to the iPhone or iPod touch, and this is because it's handle by Apple and the software is very different.

9:21 PM: Hmm, well the software for iphone is less than what I had with my palm, no edge or 3g. I know that is an att issue but see this article for whats being reported...

9:21 PM : http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10238816-233.html

9:24 PM Slingmedia: I understand, I just saw it and since this is not an official announcement, I can only say that will work only with wireless and not 3G yet and it's not possible to transfer the keys on the different mobiles to the iPhone

I've updated the story to emphasize your post. It's the opposite of what Sling told me earlier today, but I don't think we'll know for sure until the app launches tomorrow.

What I don't understand is how the companies that provide internet access were able to start the internet age advertising all the unlimited access that they did and then when actual usage began we start getting restrictions like this and bandwidth caps. Totally not cool.

I can't explain how disappointed with these news. I am still not certain if will it be available at all in Canada. We are paying Rogers $30 for only ONE ******* GB of data... can any one believe it.. it makes me sick how we are Canadian get treated with despise and always taken for granted.

North America still crying over 3G, while in some developing countries had faster service since 3 years ago, a higher speed of 3.5G, and true unlimited data over truly unlocked phones, ... and if we consider how much we are paying here, it is really a sad joke

The lack of 3G is a deal killer for me. The only time I usually have Wi-Fi access is when I'm at home. So, if I'm at home I might as well watch tv on my tv instead of an iPhone.

Not being able to sling contents through 3G network makes the application worthless. I would use sling when I am not in a Wi-Fi environment, just like I use Pandora or any other streaming media application. Ofcourse, like many, I waited to buy the new slingbox HD until I know for sure I can get the media through 3G network... now that I can't. Sling Media has just lost the $299 sale of the box, plus $30 sale of the application. What are they thinking!?!

I remember when Slingmedia came up with the software for the PDA, I downloaded it rightaway. I was so excited about it. But after a few weeks, I didn't even bother it anymore... why, because at home, I can watch TV. At work, I have computers to sling media. I don't go to the coffee shops because I am not gay. Anywhere else, I don't have Wi-Fi.
