How to make SlingPlayer Mobile work over 3G

It's bad enough that Sling Media charges $29.99 for its SlingPlayer Mobile app (which you can see demonstrated in the video at right), but limiting it to Wi-Fi connections? That's downright criminal.

Fortunately, the gadget gurus over at Gizmodo have documented a way to stream SlingPlayer video across 3G connections, thereby overcoming one of the app's major annoyances. (Now if they could just talk Sling Media into a reasonable price tag. Like, say, $5.99.)

As you might expect, there's a catch: You have to jailbreak your iPhone. It's not hard to do, particularly if you follow Gizmodo's iPhone jailbreaking guide, but it's definitely a do-at-your-own-risk procedure. (Fortunately, you can undo it if the need ever arises, like for support or warranty service from Apple.)

Once you've completed that step, all that's left is to install an app called Tricker Three3G. After that, SlingPlayer will always think it's running on Wi-Fi, even when it's running on 3G. (Bonus: Tricker pulls the same trick on Skype and Fring--great if you're looking for a way around their own connectivity restrictions.)

I haven't put this to the test myself, as I'm slightly chicken when it comes to jailbreaking my iPhone. Plus, I don't own a SlingPlayer. But based on anecdotal tests I've read elsewhere, it works as advertised.

What do you think? Does this improve SlingPlayer Mobile's functionality enough to justify the $30 price tag? Are you willing to jailbreak your phone just for this app? Share your thoughts in the comments!

$30 is a bit steep, but it's what they charge for other platforms, so I guess eh. As for jailbreaking my phone for this, possible, but I had tons of reasons before, this is just one more. For the non-tech people, I understand not jailbreaking (although it is pretty easy).

Wait, you write for CNET, about iPhones, also about Business HACKS, and you're too chicken to jailbreak your iPhone??????? Are we to trust you anymore???? LOL

I know...sad, isn't it? Truth is I haven't had a really compelling reason to do the jailbreak. No way would I spend $30 for an app like this.

This method works perfectly on the iPhone, and, as far as jailbreaking goes, it really is quite easy this time around (compared to jailbreaking the original iPhone especially, the methods developed to jailbreak the 3G iPhone require basic computer knowledge). As far as the price tag goes, $30 is much more easily justified once it runs on 3G, but, then again, once your device is jailbroken, paying for apps is a thing of the past anyway....

Jailbreaking is *very* easy to do, especially with a program like QuickPwn. Takes you step by step through the very stable and simple process. 5 Minutes and your iPhone is ready to load all sorts of customizations and programs.

Does not interfere with iTunes, AppStore or Syncing,

Slingplayer for iPhone works great on 3G. As good as it did on my Treo 750. The only way the $29.99 is worth paying IMHO.

I have been chicken to jailbreak. I have been very happy with the iPhone unjailbroken. But I really want TV regardless of whether wifi is available. For the $30 a month we pay for data we should have TV. So its time to jailbreak. But first I have to buy a slingbox.

I am concerned about jailbreaking my phone. I checked with AT&T, and getting out of the contract is not very costly. While the iPhone has some fun apps, this is the app that makes it for me. I plan to move to a phone that supports Slingplayer. I'm hoping the Palm Pre will work out.

It is better if you use VoIPover3G. It isn't as much of a battery hog. It just needs to be set up to work with Sling Player. iClarified has directions. http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=2128

I wonder how people at Apple feel about CNET practically promoting iPhone jail breaking, this is a humorous situation

As long as people are buying their phones and purchasing songs through Iphones not as much as you'd think. Cingular is affected more directly by this than Apple. Cingular doesn't want people streamign video from sources they don't control over 3G becuase it taxes their network more than they planned.

I jailbroke my iphone for this exact purpose. I understand that ATT wants to limit data usage to a minimum, but I am surprised that Apple allows themselves to be pushed around, even more surprised that ATT does not see this as another reason why Apple might decide to go elsewhere. Apple should not give in to ATT's demands so easily, this just makes their phone appear less functional than any other smartphone out there. It also gives the impression that Apple is tyrannical and abusive, an impression that I am sure they would prefer to avoid.

Now that I jailbroke my iphone, I cannot see myself going back. I have since installed various other themes, tethering and functionality programs from Cydia, and am less inclined to use the Appstore.

I hope that ATT invests in their network to an extent where they no longer will feel the need to cripple the Iphone or anybody else's services.

Sounds like fun but I believe that slingbox on the 3G violates your AT&T agreement. At some point you are going to get a bill for like $60,000 for watching an episode of Lost.

I have silently suffered Apple & AT&T's tyrannical restrictions.
No GPS apps because of no background tasks, no streaming slingbox due to AT&T network restrictions which prevented both apps Garmin had GPS ready to go in JUNE of 2008. Slingbox was ready to launch months ago as well.
Tethering, again AT&T bending me over.
All of these 'ills' fixable IF I was willing to jailbreak.
Truth is considering I've never met a device I didn't 'hack' to one degree or another I don't know *** I've been waiting for...but AT&T and Apple ought to take notice of users like myself.
I've played by their rules, but I've reached my limit for their collective and individual B.S. (Barbara Streisand)
I will wait....until 3.0 os launches so I can safely and worry free get that and all of the ridiculously absent basic smart phone functionality that I've lived with since succumbing this past January. But once I've got 3.0 and the jailbreakers work around the undoubted last minute 'new' code Apple slips in to 'break' the current jailbreak apps that work on beta 3.0 I will jalibreak at long last and get everything that should have been coming to me in terms of functionality all along.

I had an HTC Smartphone with Windows Mobile 6 and slingplayer installed and could stream over 3g. Why can't they offer the same on an iPhone!?!?!?!?!? Cruel. . . ...... FCC intervene! I shouldn't have to jailbreak my iPhone, but i guess i may have to. Hear that apple? I've been good until now. =D
