Get an iPhone charging dock for $5.99 shipped

by Rick Broida

Why spend $49 on Apple's charging dock when you can get one for 6 bucks?

Tired of your iPhone's USB cable flopping all over your desk? Wish your handset could sit upright while it's charging? Sounds like you need a dock. Unfortunately, Apple charges a whopping $49 for its Universal Dock. Surely there's an alternative for cheapskates?

There is! Meritline has an iPhone charging dock for just $5.99, shipping included. (From Hong Kong, no less!) It normally sells for $15.99, already a good deal compared with Apple's product.

Granted, this dock doesn't come with a remote, nor a bunch of dock adapters for charging various iPods. However, although Meritline's product page doesn't specifically mention the Touch, Nano, etc., my semi-educated guess is that this dock will have no problem charging them. (If it can charge a 3G, it should be able to handle anything with a dock connector.)

The dock does have the same kind of line-out port as Apple's, so you can plug in headphones, speakers, etc.

And there you have it! There's not much more to say, other than "I just ordered one." Docks are decidedly handy to have around, and for 6 bucks, how can you go wrong?

Unlike apple dock, this one will block the iPhone's microphone and speaker. ( The Apple dock has cutaways.) Still, this is a good, cheap way to get line-out.

Rick, have you stopped using twitter to post cheap deals?

Rick, I posted my experience with Meritline with the Wii controller post. Meritline is not 100% trustworthy, but cheap as dirt. I put them just a notch below eCost

I love a good deal, but eCost should be at the bottom of anyones list. Some good prices but terrible customer service if you have a problem. Avoid eCost and maybe spend a few extra bucks for peace of mind.

@Meechman1276 You might want to avoid Meritline then. Problems I've found.
- A robot construction toy (kinda like KNex) listed with the image shown being built from more than one kit.
- Toner listed as recycled original cartridges, but turning out to be generics
- Limited the star rating to a minimum of 2 (they may have corrected this)
On the plus side: Their prices are often unbeatable, and shipping is often included. Their deals of the day are limited in quantities, but absurdly good

Ordered this product from Meritline the day it was posted... have yet to receive the item. Called customer service twice (seems to be one girl answering all the calls) and they just redirected me back to the website. Originally told to just wait for the product as it was shipping from Hong Kong. Called again today... told to go online and fill out a claim form. I filled out the form asking them to re-ship the item. Who knows what will happen.

This may or may not be a dock specific issue, but I had one of those that I purchased in Hong Kong while visiting some months ago. After using it for 2-3 months I noticed battery life started steadily decreasing, to the point where it would hold its charge for less than a day even with light use. Eventually Apple replaced the phone for me for seperate reception issues, but I reverted to just using the cable and battery life has been fine so far. Again, maybe I just had a bad iPhone 3G (purchased pretty much as soon as it was introduced), but it's something to be aware of nonetheless. Stop using it if you notice a decrease in battery life!

iPhone battery life definitely decreases over time (especially once you hit the 18-month mark), but I suppose it's possible the dock played a role. Anytime you're dealing with batteries or chargers from overseas, it's a bit of a gamble.

Rick, thanks as always for finding such good deals.

While this looks tempting, I'm holding out for an inexpensive dock for my Touch 2G that has component or composite video out (in addition to audio line out) to a TV (rather not pay the Apple premium). I've noticed that there are a number of overseas (i.e, Hong Kong) suppliers for these, but have read there are issues with compatibility and build quality. Do you have any recommendations?

Ordered from Meritline on 5/22 and didn't receive until 6/15. Over 3 wks when they claim a possible 5 days. Sent 3 emails and it finally came. The product seems fine but a little disappointed with the service.
