Direct video download coming to Apple iPhone and iPod Touch?

by David Martin

According to a report on Open Salon, Apple appears to be preparing direct movie and TV show downloads on the iPhone.

Open Salon claims that an ad appearing in the free version of the app Twitterfon is the first place this new iPhone feature was discovered. However, the ad in question is nowhere to be found at press time and hasn't been confirmed.

According to the report, the ad supposedly led to a place that pointed to some movie and TV show listings. The listings were broken down by genre, and although titles were listed, none would work when accessed.

The Wrestler - download fails

This story took an interesting turn last Friday when AppleInsider reported via its post, "Apple briefs staff on wireless iPhone movie and TV downloads," that the ability to download video-based media directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi and 3G might really be coming. Their story adds some weight to the Open Salon rumor by stating:

AppleInsider has learned from people familiar with Apple's training program that new self-guided training materials being distributed to familiarize AppleCare agents with the features of iPhone 3.0 software "definitely covered" the ability to directly download movies and TV shows on the device itself, rather than just syncing video content through iTunes.

Considering all this information--and that AT&T says it has been working diligently to deliver a better and faster performing 3G network--it does seem feasible that Apple and AT&T may have worked out issues surrounding direct video downloads, just as they did previously with music downloads.

Still, the rumors don't quite square with AT&T's refusal to allow SlingPlayer to work on its 3G network, supposedly because of the bandwidth the player would require.

What do you think? Would you be interested in being able to directly download TV or movies to your iPhone or iPod Touch? If Apple and AT&T allow direct downloads, should AT&T's SlingPlayer policy change? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I think the idea of downloading a movie or tv show would be nice to have on the iPhone 3G. I just wonder how long it would take to perform the download over a Wi-Fi connection.

Considering itunes movies are a gig in size, it wouldn't take long to cap out the AT&T's "unlimited" 5gb bandwidth per month

Im pretty sure AT&T's not the one whos stopping the Sling player from working on the 3G network. Think about it, some WinMo and Blackberry phones have Sling and their able to be used on the 3G network... I think Apples the one whos blocking Sling from working on the 3G. By only allowing iPhone holders to use Sling on Wifi it greatly restricts them from being able to watch recorded programming on the go. Thus people will still buy and download TV and Movies on the iTunes store. If Apple let Sling work everywhere then why the hell would anyone by TV or Movies from the iTunes store when they could keep the entire season of Lost on their home DVR and then watch it through Sling anytime??? This is also why the iPhone doesn't have AT&T's TV service like a few of their phones as well, it's APPLE!!!!

That's so true. I think Apple is trying to make it sound like AT&T's fault just so the Apple sheep continue to think that Apple is perfect.

I wish mobile TV was on the iPhone... It's a rather basic feature that's on a countless number of phones... even Motorola razrs have mobile TV capibilities. Why not work this feature into iPhone 3.0's software, Apple? How about a little compatibility with your network's services???

Why not put the iPhone on Sprint? I used to have Sprint before we switched to AT&T (for the iPhone, of course), and I always had blazing fast internet service. Plus, everybody knows Sprint already has 4G running in several major metropolitan areas. I know Sprint is a CDMA carrier, but Apple should really consider a CDMA handset. I mean, CDMA has better coverage in the states than GSM... Just compare AT&T's coverage map with Sprint's and Verizon's.

Even if Apple did make a CDMA version, it's highly unlikely they'd build WiMax into it, so Sprint's 4G network isn't really relevant.

I just found the same area from an ad on FML's app...made a bunch of screenshots.
but now it just seems pointless now that we know it's gonna have it.
