32GB iPhone confirmed?

by David Martin

As time passes, Apple's attempts to keep quiet about upcoming iPhone models are failing. Now, a post on iClarified, AT&T Accidentally Confirms 32GB iPhone?, appears to confirm rumors about a 32GB iPhone.

According to the post, iClarified "received information from an anonymous tipster directing them to the AT&T BlackBerry Trade Up site, where AT&T customers can trade in their specific cell phones to upgrade to a BlackBerry."

Customers visiting the site can select the phone they want to trade in, the BlackBerry model they want to upgrade to, and are then told how much money will be applied toward that new phone.

The product selection drop-down menu is telling, since it reveals a 32GB iPhone model listed at the bottom of the list of iPhone models. The site also calculates the value of the 32GB iPhone at $355 toward a new BlackBerry. In comparison, a 16GB iPhone is valued at $205.

Also consider that this isn't the first rumor of a 32GB iPhone--we reported about it here, and T-Mobile in Austria briefly listed a 32GB iPhone model as "coming soon" before pulling down the post.

We probably won't know for sure until WWDC in June, but since this isn't the first time we've heard this 32GB iPhone rumor and because the capacity jump is a logical path for iPhone hardware, we think the 32GB iPhone will be available this summer. Do you? Leave your own guesses in the comments.

I think the 32 gb iPhone is very much gonna be launched because we saw that happen to the ipod nano and the ipod touch last year. Apple is trying to increase the storage on its devices with every release. However the 32 gb iphone also indicates that there will be some applications which will be heavy in size which would require more storage. remember, apple announced 1000 new API's at the iphone os 3.0 event.

I think the 32 GB iPhone is just so obvious, I don't know why people are even "speculating" it. Also, I personally think Apple is shooting itself in the foot by not revealing the details as they think the competitors like Palm Pre etc will gain advantage. Any such advantage is very tiny considered to this..If the end users knew about the new iPhone specs, there is no doubt that people coming to the end of their contracts would hold on a little longer if they have to to get the new iPhone rather than going with likes of Blackberry or Palm Pre. There is a huge number of people that Apple is ignoring here, not to mention the recurring revenue year over year. Again...Apple's arrogance blinds them. Apple...the flawed genius. It's not like there is even a competition and an award for "the most tight lipped company in the world".

Apple is actually making a smart move I think. Remember back to the first iPhone and every release since: They have created a ton of public interest and excitement over it by keeping it such a secret. Personally, I can't wait to see any updates to the hardware or software of the iPhone. Since I already know a lot about something like the Pre, whose specs have been released a while ago, I'm not nearly as excited for it. Plus, keeping secrets means interested consumers will keep looking and checking for more information, possibly leading them to other Apple products in the process. And, it gives something for all the blogs and reporters to write about. Apple isn't going for an award...just more marketshare. And with the iPhone, they have it...at least for now.

Does that "value" they assign it mean that it is going to cost almost twice as much as a 16gb iphone?

Remember, there already is a 32GB iPod Touch. It is logical for there to also be a 32GB iPhone, as the platforms are identical and the hardware is near-identical.

I don't care if the new Iphone has 100Gig. IT better have a better battery or there is no way i am upgrading.. Just think how much juice bluetooth transfers, push notification, turn by turn gps, etc will affect the current batttery. Ive said it all along, you can't have the most advanced features in the world on a phone that has a crappy battery.

I had horrible battery life with the iPhone 3g until I finally turned off the PUSH feature for email.

My iPhone now stays charged after a full days worth of business calls while having bluetooth and wifi enabled compared to MAYBE 5 hours before?

It's not that the battery is crappy, when you're phoning home every 10 or seconds.. you're bound to kill the battery

So that means hopefully the 16GB will go down to $199, and the 32GB will go to $299? If they made an 8GB model $99 dollars, it might hurt the other versions' sales, but it would sell a lot.

I agree. Put it on Verizon (as long as they don't castrate the phone - like GPS and other data type applications).

And deal with Verizon's insistence on crippling every piece of hardware they touch? No thanks. I might be in the minority, but I'd rather deal with AT&T's inferior network than have to deal with having a Verizon iPhone that I know is much more capable than what Verizon permits it to be. As long as Verizon believes that controlling downloads of all types and restricting features that provide alternatives to the Verizon-provided version, as critical to their business model, truly capable hardware (and their manufacturers) should steer clear.

the iphone has a lot of nice features, but it doesn't have the features that i want in a phone (user-replaceable battery, instant messaging, video messaging, multi-tasking). i have an lg Vu that can do those things (most cell phones can). The Vu even has live tv! :)

I don't care if the new Iphone has 100KB. IT better have worse battery or their is no way i am upgrading... Just think how much juicy bluthooth transexexuals, pushme notification, turn bi turn gps, ect will affect the current in the battery. Jonathan Ive said it all along, you can have the most advanced features in the world on a blackberry that has a creepy battery.

32 GB iphone is pointless as

Nokia N97 , Samsung Omnia , Palm Pre and HTC Touch Pro 2 have far better features

it is emerging that the Iphone is a gimmiky gadget and not a high performance smart phone

Apple needs to work on the software and hardware functionality as also options

yeah, i think the rumors regarding the processor, ram and software changes are more interesting.
by scifidaddyo May 27, 2009 9:08 AM PDT
This is silly. why can't a device come out with 4 SD card slots instead of dedicated memory. i could then load 2 cards with music, 1 with video and the other with photos. when i want more music, i just replace the photo card with another music card. much more flexible and expandable as SD cards are hitting the 16 GB range.
