Next gen iPhone auto-focus, compass revealed?

by David Martin

Update: June 1, 2009: UMPCFever has removed the blog post from its Web site.

A Chinese-language blog UMPCFever posted pictures recently that its claims are the first ever photos from a functioning next-generation iPhone. The Web site, translated through Google, displays images of iPhone OS 3.0 running some of the rumored new iPhone features we covered here, here, here, and here.

According to the report, the new iPhone contains an auto-focusing camera that uses an onscreen square that can be moved around with a combination of taps and dragging to choose the object to focus on. The rumored digital compass and its software are shown as well. Other features in iPhone OS 3.0 are demoed on the site like MMS--supporting video and photos, copy and paste, the Voice Recorder app, and so on.

The credibility of this group is unknown, but the features shown on the site have already been demoed by Apple or consistent with rumors circulating around the Internet about the next generation iPhone and iPhone OS 3.0.

So what do you think? Is this the next iPhone and its new software? Let us know in the comments.

Plausible... but the "New iPhone - Auto-Focus" pic has significantly less color, or is over exposed. If they're going to introduce more features to the camera it would be nice to see some manual exposure options (or effects that simulate them), even if they are just sliders on camera screen.

It's a combination of correct exposure and a better white balance. The second speedo picture is not overexposed, but the backlit areas are 1-2EV higher than in the previous photo.

It's a good idea. I'd be interested to know if it's gps based or magnetic.

RIIIIGHT a magnetic compass in a cell phone. Consider your curiosity satisfied. Question: A speaker is made of what? Answer: A magnet. Which is known to generally have adverse effects when used near a compass.
by bigbadboston May 31, 2009 2:57 PM PDT
@professionaladventurer - check out the G1's specs - it's already got a compass inside and it uses it to let you navigate Google Street View with accurate orientation (i.e. aim your phone north to see how that particular street corner looks when facing north)

If this is really being included in the iPhone, it might have a very limited usefulness, but I wouldnt put it past them or a creative programmer to come up with some interesting widgets or even games that use it.
by jking304 June 1, 2009 12:08 PM PDT
Compass chips have calibration routines that allow them to account for local mineral deposits, metal frames, and nearby magnets. Also, speakers don't have to use magnets. For example, these are awesome speakers http://www.martinlogan.com/

using the typical iphone fan argument: "There iphone goes, immitating the competition. Why can't they innovate instead of stealing their ideas?"

This was in Android from launch. There are some cool apps like their Stardroid which you can point the phone in any direction and it uses both the compass and accelerometer to show the constellations, annotated, that you are looking at.

Also, turn by turn directions while on foot is incredibly sweet. Keep turning until you point in the right direction...

Does the new auto focus also force people to put on their seat belts?

That's because it's not new. When somebody makes something they never made before, it makes the news... regardless if somebody else has already done it. That's why it's called the NEWs.

Fixed that one for ya

This is new for the iPhone. Just like some of the features on the Pre are new even though they've been on the iPhone. Why do people constantly complain about the news. Stay away from CNet if you don't like it.
by iHackThings May 31, 2009 6:42 PM PDT
it's because it's called "the news," which has been redefined in our society as "current events that are provocative/that people are interested in/it's also probably apple's way of subliminal advertising (let's face it, some people are already coming up with a gameplan for how they are going to afford this shiny new iPhone, let alone pay their mortgage AND feed their children." In short, I guess if the news was really always new, it would be called "The New News."

Wait a minute...you mean to say that no one has created a compass app for the iPhone???

So does this mean that my G1 is the only phone out there with a compass app?

That's pretty amazing. I made a compass app after the Hello World tutorial I followed months ago. It really wasn't that difficult. I'm amazed nobody did this for the iPhone. But then again it could potentially tell people which direction to go to get a copy of the Kama Sutra so it may have been rejected.
by myles taylor May 31, 2009 6:38 PM PDT
There are tons of compass apps for the iPhone. A quick iTunes or even a Google search would have answered your question.

If Apple put on in, it would mean every phone would have one, and no one would need to download the App. Personally, I don't really see the value in it all that much for the majority of iPhone users, but (shrugs)

Mind me asking why? Were you unhappy with your iPhone? Is there some feature on the Pre that the iPhone didn't have (like a physical keyboard)? Or are you just one of those people who buys the newest and coolest thing just so that you have it to show off?
by baggyguy1218 May 31, 2009 12:48 PM PDT
I could careless, I just want to know the storage size and the prices for each size. I know where Im going because the GPS google map tells me so, I do not need a compass.

Looks real to me. In fact, I'd bet on the fact that this is real.. especially because it's coming from China. I would expect leaked iPhones to come out of China first because they are built there.

Magnetic compass is needed just to show the North when you are not move. And yes just G1 has it for now, how I know. There is some other pro devices with it. Most of the product Apple made was not new, but the way they presented and the way gadgets works is new.

THE iPhoon ..... IT'S EVERYTHING BUT A DECENT PHONE!

That's Apple ... GADGET SELLER (cause they MANUFACTURE Nothing) SUPREME.

True. But Apple sure sells a lot of gadgets ($30 billion in the bank and no debt)!! Seems like Palm (selling phones for more than 10 years) Rim (selling phones for more than 10 years), Nokia (selling phones for more than 25 years), Motorola (selling phones for more than 37 years) are all copying the ideas of a gadget maker that can't make a decent phone and that's only been in the phone business for 2 years. Why is that?
by myles taylor May 31, 2009 6:41 PM PDT
Is it? Works fine for me. I make calls, I send and receive texts. It has it's flaws, but to call it not even decent.... My iPhone is a decent phone. Do you have one?
by jtaylor475 June 1, 2009 1:19 PM PDT
Calling Apple a gadget company foolishly ignores the first 20 years of its existence.

So I beg to differ. The iPhone is the best cell phone I've had. I've been using them since 1993. I've owned Nokias and razers and Blackberries and have had cell phones as far back as the Motorola bricks. The iPhone is the best I've owned. Not only from the standpoint of not dropping calls, but because I can actually hear the other person, and the integration of all of a contact's information in one place, while possible in some other phones, has never been easier accomplish.

This is like opening your Christmas presents early. People always trying to expose and be the "First" to leak info. Just be patient and wait for Santa to come by and enjoy. Who cares what comes out of China, Clones, copy cats, and poor Quality control!

I don't believe these leaked photos are legitimate. The software OS on the iPhone looks like it was a jailbreak.

I agree. Another rumor is that the 3rd gen iphone will not have a chrome bezel, it will be black instead--but this one does appear to have a chrome bezel.

WOW! Auto focus on a camera phone!! Who would have thought of that? And it can probably copy and paste 6% faster!! (erm... it can copy and paste, right...?)

Next, I think Apple should revolutionise the mobile world by making an iPhone that doesn't drop calls every 5 minutes... that would be a real innovation...

Thats ATT and not apple.
by nasdev June 1, 2009 4:21 PM PDT
It can be AT&T, but I have noticed more problems with my Apple iPhone than with my SonyEricsson. From what I understand the metal band can affect reception. Apple is new to the cellular hardware game, not AT&T at providing wireless service.
by edentifier2 June 1, 2009 5:39 PM PDT
Hi guys, well, not all of us live in America :-)

I am in western Europe, where you have quite a wide choice of 3G providers, and they have been offering such a service for quite some time. One company we work with - they bought iPhones for all their staff - and after a few months they have resigned themselves to calling us on landlines, or using PAYG mobiles as the reception from their iPhone is so poor. Same for some friends, who are on different providers.

Basically, it is not a phone, it is a gadget - the only thing of real interest is the marketing hype, which of course plays well with CNETs 'post something bad about Microsoft, then post good about Apple, and wait for people to react in the comment section while we earn advertising money' approach to technology reporting.
by TogetherinParis June 1, 2009 1:17 AM PDT
Knowing Apple, both the compass and the camera will now be revolutionarily better than they've ever been in the past. And those lowest pixels in the image? Machine readable code telling the time, date, location, and direction of the photograph, natch. On screen, you will be able to click on distant structures and geographical features and be enlightened on it by the entire web for the entirety of Apple-recorded history. AT LAST, THE DAWN.

I figured out how to dramatically increase the data coverage for the iPhone! Buy a MiFi from Sprint or Verizon! To bad it doesn't work for calls! Anyone who thinks AT&T's coverage compares to Verizon or Sprint is completely insane! If you think T-Mobile is any better you make a crazy person look sane! I think it has to do with the tower placement. The original AT&T network was laid out for analog cellular and then the TDMA digital replacement. When AT&T switched to GSM, the tower placements were too far apart and they have been adding towers to fill in the dead zones ever since!

You are factually incorrect. Sprint has the fourth largest network. Sprint's technology is good (4G coming anytime to a city near you after June 12th), but AT&T is second only to Verizon in coverage across the United States and are the one of only two carriers (T-Mobile the other) in the states that work overseas throughout the lineup. The only holes AT&T has are in it's 3G network, for data. However the 3G iPhone still has Edge capability which is available readily anywhere.
