New iPhone gets fingerprint-resistant coating

by David Martin

The iPhone 3G S promises faster hardware, a better camera, and an unannounced feature: a multitouch screen that repels skin oil. We discovered this new feature while browsing the iPhone How To--Cleaning iPhone, which reads:

To clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn off iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPhone. If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone's screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face.

According to Wikipedia, "Oleophobic (from the Greek (oleo) "oil") refers to the physical property of a molecule that is repelled from oil. The most common lipophobic/oleophobic substance is water."

Fingerprints on iPhone screens have been a source of consumer complaints since the release of the first iPhone in 2007. This new feature probably doesn't prevent fingerprints, but it likely makes the grease easier to wipe off. (If easier cleaning doesn't satisfy your need for neatness, try Phone Fingers--pictured below--but you only have yourself to blame if no one loves you while you wear them.)

There is no problem with the old phone. any glasses wipe cloth can clean all finger prints without water.
(unless you have sticky finger like my kids after eating)

Just give the old iPhone a blast of your "hot air" and the moisture is enough to wipe it clean. Just like you do on optical grade lenses for glasses and cameras.

Oooooh, aaaah!

Well that has me really chomping at the bit for the new iPhone.

Ok, sarcasm aside, it's pretty sad that the new phone has so few new features that this one is actually being hyped.

Then there's all of the people in the various forums ******** at AT&T for not being able to upgrade to the new phone without having to pay a severe penalty. Do these people not have any life at all? What would make anybody so desperate to upgrade from an older iPhone for this incremental upgrade? I don't get it. Are so many Apple fans really that retarded?

how is it being hyped? Apple said nothing about it.
by SiliconValleyJoe June 10, 2009 2:57 PM PDT
Few new features? So video editing does not count? External device control and interface does not count? Global search, landscape keyboard, MobileMe locator and remote wipe also do not count? So what new features do you want to see?

Severe penalty? I can upgrade my old first-gen iPhone to 3G for $99 or the 16GB 3GS for $199, where is the penalty? Oh, you mean those people who have a new contract? Like my other new iPhone 3G that is only five months old? Yes, if I break the contract and upgrade, I have to pay more but I KNOW that when I bought the iPhone 3G. Do you mean Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile all let you break contract for free?

C'mon now, what exactly are you getting at?
by Brent212 June 11, 2009 9:06 AM PDT
@ SiliconValleyJoe:
Aren't those features of the new OS, not of the new phone? If so, then your first paragraph should be stricken from the record. If not, then please excuse my ignorance.

Hey mdg1019, that's because the iPhone was so perfect already since it was introduced. It doesn't need any fan fare. Don't hate just because it keeps getting better from an already awesome state of marvel!

Hope that coating is environmentally safe

apparently NOT! It seems that they represent a high environmental health risk as it is most likely a fluorocarbon, it depletes the ozone layer and if not disposed of properly it may get into water supplies and cause nerve damage. furthermore, it does not degrade very easily and affects wildlife negatively.

What is so funny? I am bering serious. Apple makes the environmentally conscious laptops with all aluminum. I only had to discard as much silicon as aluminum. And I don't know what happens to the LCD screen.

wow....those finger things are pretty sexxxy!

Really? I thought they were kinda grisly. Like someone had a senior moment with the fingerprint inking pad at central booking.

they look like finger condoms...
by BenzBoy79 June 10, 2009 12:39 PM PDT
Maybe that's why they have to chage us early adopters and extra $200!!!!

Isn't oleophobic the same thing as hydrophilic? Goodbye fingerprints, hello condensation? I don't think anyone living on the East Coast will want this particular option...

oleophobic means that it repels oil and oil-like substances while hydrophillic means that it retains water. While water is the most oil-repellent substance, it doesn't mean that the coating is water-retaining but more likely that it is just a different type of coating altogether, nothing to do with H2).

That's pretty neat

I don't get why people are getting so bent out of shape because they're not getting a discount to upgrade to the 3GS. It's pretty simple you signed a contract 2 year contract which is almost exactly like every other cell phone contract in the US and even other parts of the world. The new iPhone isn't a giant leap in technology almost all the features are going to be available to iPhone 3G users with the FREE 3.0 update. I wish the update introduced the voice control to my 3G since there is no reason for it not to have this feature. And really don't mind waiting another year to upgrade because by that time yet another iPhone will have been released with more new features. Get over the fact that you don't get special privileges because you're an iphone user. Everybody with a cell phone contract has the same restrictions on upgrades but you don't see that AT&T paid $400 or more than half of the list price of your phone.

LMAO! Let's see how many will actually TRY this now.

Or, you know, you could just use a screen protector. Its not like the isn't 100 different ones on the market...

The problem with screen protectors is that more than some of them think 'shiny' is the what people must have since the sheen of the phone is that way to begin with. Can't have a dull-looking, matte face panel, can we? Destroys the bling-bling effect, doesn't it?

Once you go down that path...guess what? The screen protector shows JUST AS MUCH FINGERPRINTS as the bloody phone did!

David, what about the iPod touch? Is it being upgraded to a new oleophobic screen as well?

The iPods don't get upgraded until September. There haven't been many rumors about them, but I'm guessing it will have this feature.

I have a mat finish protector for my 3G. No real issues with finger prints. When it gets a little dirty, I just rub it on my shirt.

Waffling as an organic chemist, my informed guess would be that the new coating will be of a teflon type - which is both oil- and water- repelling (try adding either to a new non-stick fry pan). Or it could be a newer and even better variety such as diamond-like carbon polydimethysilane hybrid.
