Two cheaper alternatives to Find My iPhone

by Rick Broida

An inexpensive StuffBak label may help a lost iPhone find its way home.

No doubt about it, Apple's just-announced Find My iPhone app is pretty cool. If your precious goes missing, you can remotely transmit a "Help, help, I'm lost!" message in the hopes that whoever found it will return it.

If that doesn't pan out, you can send a Mission Impossible-style self-destruct command that'll wipe the iPhone's memory, thus protecting any sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.

Unfortunately, the price of this nifty recovery/security service is a subscription to Apple's MobileMe, which costs $99 annually. That's fine if you're already a subscriber, but way too pricey if all you want is an iPhone safety net.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. On the low-tech side there's StuffBak, a coded recovery label you slap on the back of your iPhone. The finder dials a toll-free number or visits the StuffBak site; the service arranges return shipping at no cost to the finder.

The good Samaritan also gets 20 bucks' worth of StuffBak stuff and any cash reward you want to add to the pot. As for you, recovery costs vary depending on the service plan you choose, but they won't be more than $30.

Getting closer to a MobileMe-style solution, GadgetTrak is a free app designed to help you locate a stolen iPhone (so you can recover it vigilante-style! Or, if you're boring and law-abiding, with the police's help). Check it out:

All you do is install and configure the app--then hope that the thief is dumb enough to tap the "Trak" icon (which, admittedly, looks not unlike the Safari icon). Doing so will bring up the URL of your choice (Google is the default) while secretly transmitting the phone's location to GadgetTrak. Login to your account to see the report.

Obviously the app needs the option of working in the background, without manual activation. GadgetTrak plans to "add additional functionality and triggers as Apple makes them available to us," but for now it's of limited value.

What do you think? Is Find My iPhone worth a $99 Mobile subscription, or are you better off with cheaper, third-party alternatives. I'm hoping that the arrival of OS 3.0 brings a lot more options for locating a lost or stolen phone.

Meh. Both of the above apps. are a good start, but as you say, the first is expensive and the second does not consider the 'thief' factor. I would suggest iLocalis...it includes a daemon that runs in the background so any bad guy won't even notice. even if the main icon is removed, it takes some command shell work to remove the daemon (insert laugh here). Very cheap (share ware) and it's got all those neat features; remote disable, remote ring, even with another SIM card(!?) which is pretty cool...only drawback is that it is for a jailbroken phone...but to me that's worth it.

Twice this year, I've lost my Blackberry and had it returned through a service called TrackItback - www.trackitback.com . They were provided to me through my company. I placed a Trackitback on my Blackberry, laptop, kids cell phones, etc. Both times I lost my Blackberry, they had them returned to me, for free. Wonderful customser service, the best I've seen in years.

Hmm. it's another 'sticker-call' service, like Stuff-Bak above. this is great if you're counting on an honest person , not a thief...so to me this is not enough coverage.

Apple's new feature sounds awesome and they were very smart to add it to Mobile Me. But sorry... just not worth the $99/year price tag. I just keep a listing in my phone labeled "Me - Reward If Found" with my work phone and email address. Any honest person will call. And let's face it... if your phone falls in the hands of a dishonest person? You're not getting it back whether you have Mobile Me or not.

for those who don't want to pay the $99 for mobile me from apple, you can get it for only 60 bucks on amazon!

It seems to me, that AT&T should be able to offer this as a service. If they have the IMEI number, they ought to be able to locate it on their network, and tell me/the police where the phone is. I'd even be willing to pay a one-time fee - say $5 - if this was included by them. This fee could be collected as the price for their (currently free) AT&T myWireless Mobile app.

Or, in the iPhone OS 3.0 version, this could be an in-app transaction for people who wish to add it.

Out of curiousity could you purchase mobile me after you lost your phone or do you have to sync your phone with mobile me before hand?????

Another cheap option if all you want is find my iphone would be to wait until you lost it and then $99 would not seem so steep, or you could be cheap and pick it up at amazon for $60 which it always seems to be priced at.....

I would rather not rely on the person who stole my phone in the first place.

As for sending a message to the phone, you can always email (your number)@txt.att.com, or, once iPhone OS 3.0 comes out and AT&T catches up, you could do my personal favorite: send a picture of you holding a gun to (your number)@mms.att.com :D

Make them think you are crazy; you'd be surprised how fast that iPhone will get back to you ;)

Sprint has something called Family Finder, which uses your phone's GPS to tell you where it is within several dozen yards, at which point you could just call it and find it by ring. Provided that it's on, of course. Which would have to be the case with this app too. It's only $5/mo, with the added benefit of being able to track people on the same plan, if they're willing to be tracked. Or you could just call your phone and hope that whoever picks up will return your phone (happened to me once). Or designate a CALL THIS IF FOUND number in one's contacts. To each their own, I suppose.

$99 is too expensive. MobileMe does have some value, however, you can essentially do everything MobileMe does with other programs which are free. Granted they are not in a neat little package but most people will go out of their way for free. Everytime I think about getting MobileMe, I think, Xbox Live is $50 bucks annually, Netflix is $120 a year, what does MobileMe really offer to spend that kind of cash? I did the free trial and I did like it but maybe $25 to $30 bucks like not $99 like. That's a good tip on the Amazon deal but between MobileMe and 4gigs Ram gotta go with the ram on that one.

it's $35 on ebay. people are signing other people up under their family plan. They say that once you change the password they have no control over your account. Not sure if thats true or not.

There's a new app in the App Store that let's you perform some of the functions of Find My iPhone but doesn't require a subscription to Mobile Me.

The app's called TapTrace. Check it out.
