AT&T's launch day iPhone 3G S preorders sold out

by David Martin

If you were looking forward to avoiding that iPhone line at the Apple or AT&T store by ordering early from AT&T, you're too late now.

AT&T preorders have sold out and folks placing preorders now are being told they'll have to wait up to two weeks to get a phone.

AT&T customers lucky enough to get their orders in early can still report to their respective AT&T stores at 7 a.m. Friday to get their iPhone 3G S. They will have a guaranteed slot if they show up, but others who did not preorder will have to fight over the remaining stock at Apple and AT&T stores.

AT&T is still accepting preorders, but not for an expected delivery on Friday. Preorders placed at an AT&T store will be picked up at that store, whereas online orders will be shipped directly to your home or office. We suggest ordering online and having the iPhone shipped directly to you unless you like spending a lot of time in line making new friends.

It should be noted that besides Apple and AT&T stores, Best Buy and Wal-Mart locations should also have the iPhone 3G S for sale on June 19.

What plans do you have for buying an iPhone 3G S? Tell us about it in the comments.

Are you sure that Best Buy will let you reserve phones?....I wonder why they wouldn't let you reserve a game console like the PS3 on launch.....usually it's first come first served
by make_or_break June 17, 2009 6:03 PM PDT
Sryche: it's APPLE we're talking about here. If BB allows reservations, I'd say it's Cupertino that's calling the shots. BB probably had to give up SOMETHING to get the "privilege" of being an iPhone reseller.
by Sryche22 June 17, 2009 7:34 PM PDT
yeah but can anyone else confirm that their Best Buy store is also taking reservations?.....unfortunately, I haven't been able to get through to either of the local Best Buy's here...no one is picking up on their customer service line...heh =(
by pHenom_713 June 17, 2009 8:58 PM PDT
Yes it's true, YOU CAN RESERVE a phone @ BB.. I walked in to my local BB store this afternoon planning to ask what time theyre going to open on friday, or if people will be allowed to camp out.. BUT I SAW A GLIMPSE to the side and there it was.. RESERVE iPhone 3G S TODAY.. all I did was put $50 down and im reserved a 32gb iPhone. NO LINES! NO CAMPING OUT!!!
by Sryche22 June 18, 2009 1:12 AM PDT
yeah...i went over to BB tonight and they said they were preordering, but that because they are unsure when and how many they are getting (a.k.a a limited supply) they were only doing a certain amount of deposit/Pre orders.....the associate took my name and number and just said they will call when they get to my name....guess that's about all I can do for now
by atzicecream June 16, 2009 8:04 PM PDT
Remember, it should be noted that those (like me) that had to do the at&t direct fulfillment last year when the iPhone 3G came out and was sold out were told that it would be up to a week to two weeks...my phone which was ordered on Friday morning was in my hands the next Tuesday...that's only four days. I have to believe that last years model is more important to most than this year's model. Just an opinion...mm

Same here. I waited to get the 3G, I can wait a little while longer to get the 3Gs. Does anyone know when the update will be posted? It's 10:30am EST. I tried updating to 3.0 a few times to no avail.
by crazynip June 17, 2009 8:01 AM PDT
Yeah same here. Being as I have the original 8gb iphone $599.00 and updated to the 16gb iphone 3g $299.00 at the lower cost, im not about to pay $500 for the 32g 3gs so ill just wait it out. Now if it was available to me for $299.00 id buy one in a heartbeat lol but nooooooo i got to wait 5 months to get that pricing. I dont see why they cant just tac my year and a half i have left on this current contract to a new 2 year agreement and give me the $299.00 price lol. id gladly commit to a 3.5 year contract ive already been with att for over 3 years anyways lol

Walmart has reported that they will not be getting the iPhone 3G S on the 19th. There has been a delay getting the new iTunes software out to their activation terminals. No word yet on exactly when they will have them and be able to sell them.

I agree with you ywkhgqo-when Verizon gets this phone, I'll get the iphone. I hate AT&T and their crappy reception.

Good luck. I had the same thing happen to me (pre-ordered over a week ago). I called twice to ask why it was showing "not processed yet" and was told not to worry. I called again today and the guy said, "Hmmmm there is an issue with processing" and processed it on the phone. He then told me it will take 7 to 14 days to receive the phone. I was livid. I am even under their Premier accounts. I can't believe I'm leaving Verizon for this. All because I want the iPhone.

I haven't ordered one, and figured on buying at the Apple store nearby. I am confused on pricing - as a brand new AT&T customer, how much will I pay for the phone? I'll prob go with the lowest gb option.

for the 3gs, your options are the $199 16 GB or the 32 gb at $299

you can however, get the normal iphone 3g for $99

I also ordered my 16gb 3g-s on the 15th from the AT & T website. Any chance me of actually getting it on the 19th?

Can't wait for my 3GS on Friday!

Truth? Or delusional? The jury's still out...

Did anyone order from the online apple store ? I did, and the phone should be delivered to my house on Friday, yet I keep reading about people going to the Apple/AT&T/Walmart/etc store to "pick up and activate" their iPhone ?

I thought that you simply activate via iTunes at home ? I'm simply replacing my 2G iPhone with the 3Gs..
...what up ?

I have a Palm Pre on order, but I do have to say; much like Apple fan boys posting on Palm Pre posts, you just sound stupid and immature posting Palm fanboy posts here. I would expect that from Apple fanboys but I think we're above that.

No one cares about you and your pointless comments. Go away and play with the dorky Pre users.

Pre-ordered last week. My phone is sitting in Kentucky with a hold placed on it by Apple.
Should be here by Friday! :) (impatiently waiting).

I have pre-ordered an iPhone 3GS on the ATT premier site on 6/11, and as of now 6/17am, my order is still showing pending on the status page. There has been many lengthy discussion at ATT.com's iphone forum about issues with premier accounts and why regular account holder had their order shown as "shipping" already. Most premier members are speculating that we won't be getting the phone until next week. Why are there 2nd tier service for premier members???

I pre-ordered at my AT&T store last Friday morning, and was told that pre-orders were cut off later that afternoon. Just made it, apparently. My phones - a 16 and 32 GB - shipped on Tues, and I'm told that they'll be at the store on Friday morning.

My Verizon contract can't be cancelled until June 29, but I didn't want to end up waiting if the 3Gs had sold out, and the salesperson at AT&T offered to waive the fee for the number transfers. I couldn't pass it up. Looking forward to Friday.

I preordered last Friday through AT&T and was told that it would take one to two weeks to get the phone after launch. But, after checking through AT&T's order tracking, the phone has shipped next-day air and should be here on launch day.
