First Impressions: iPhone 3.0 on the original iPhone

by CBS Interactive staff

Like most of the Apple fanboys out there, I anxiously awaited the arrival of the latest iPhone software upgrade to 3.0. And, like my fellow nerds, I continuously clicked the "Check for Updates" button in iTunes starting around 9:55 a.m. Pacific (in case Apple released the update early). Finally, around 10:15 a.m., I got the notification that new software was available to download - here's what I think so far:

As was mentioned in the title, I have the original iPhone. Because the update is optimized for the newest hardware, the iPhone 3G S, I knew many of the 3.0 software features would not apply to my device. However, even on my ancient (nearly two years old) handset I was able to find some great upgrades.

The first thing I had to check was the camera. Many of the 3.0 beta testers reported that the cameras on the older phones were much...snappier, and I can confirm that. Everything from loading the app to the shutter seems to have gained major speed improvements. The navigation system has changed a bit too - the "go to Photo Library" button has been replaced with a button that shows a thumbnail of the last photo you took. When pressed, you can examine your entire camera library. I don't know if it is taking better pictures or if I just want to believe it is, but certainly the faster shutter response makes the photos seem much sharper. You can even set your "double-click the home button" function to open the camera application.

Next up was inspecting Spotlight. A simple swipe to the right from your start page and you can begin your search. If you're not one to swipe, simply click the home button and you're ready to go. If you on a page other than the start page, click the home button twice. Spotlight works quickly and accurately finding information on my iPhone, although I noticed searching text messages was not an option. It's great for contacts and e-mail.

Speaking of text messages, you can now delete and/or forward from the edit button, one or multiple messages. Having to delete an entire conversation previously didn't seem logical if I only wanted to get rid of one particularly "not safe for work" message.

Safari has added the ability to close all windows, leaving only a blank page, waiting to be commissioned for surfing. One of my major annoyances with starting Safari in the past was having to stop the previously visited page from reloading before entering a new destination.

The newest addition to the "you cannot delete this app" family of useful built-in programs is Voice Memos. In true Apple fashion, it's sleek and simple and does exactly what it says. It records your voice and stores them as memos. Once your memo is stored you can tag it with a label, trim the bad parts out, or share it via e-mail.

And one last feature that may turn out to be a saving grace for another Apple service--Find My iPhone. This location, remote message, and remote wipe feature via MobileMe may end up revitalizing MobileMe's appeal. As a security feature, the ability to locate your iPhone (and wipe it completely if needed) makes MobileMe nearly essential - especially if you have a propensity for losing your phone. On my original iPhone, the locator was not very specific, letting me know that my iPhone was within a five-mile radius the office. I would imagine the GPS tracking on the iPhone 3G and 3G S are much more narrow. This is not as useful on the original iPhone, but I suppose it's still good to know if my phone has skipped town.

The other highly-touted features of iPhone 3.0 sadly will not be experienced by my original iPhone. Auto-focus camera lens, video recording and editing, and voice control are all hardware specific features available on the iPhone 3G S. And although I sorely covet those things to the point that I may actually throng about in the crowds at the local Apple Store on Friday simply to get a glimpse of the new features in action, the iPhone 3.0 update for my original iPhone is great.

Thanks for the info, especially in relation to the original iPhone. I've been traveling in the Middle East and the 3.0 software and iPhone 3GS announcements caught me by surprise. I had heard the 3.0 software didn't perform so well on the original iPhone (which I have) so I was debating whether to update the software or buy a 3GS on my way home from the airport. Looks like I'll be giving the software a shot first now.

Just curious, how did you use the Find My Phone feature? When I log into MobileMe it tells me it will be available soon?

Hi Pat,

It's probably just going to take a while for the update to become available to all accounts. If you can't see it now, try back a little later (and try logging in and out too).

Today in my lunch break around 12:45pm PST, I tried updating the software to 3.0 OS but I help on getting the message from iTunes saying that the iPhone activation server is not responding .......I wouldnt expect that from Apple that on the day of launch their infrastructure would crash onto the users............hopefully its going to be fixed when i return home in the evening......HUH ...........cant wait to get my hands on the the latest release....

just updated my original iphone and 3.0 works fine, maybe even snappier than before. New features are great.

pre-ordered my 3GS anyway.

Anyone had any luck using Bluetooth? I was hoping to use it on my iPod touch to transfer photos back and forth between the touch and my LG Dare cell phone on the go. The Dare sees the touch, but they don't establish a connection.

First thing I noticed with the new release is the new iPod features - you can speed up/slow down playback of podcasts (there is a toggle button that cycles 1x, 2x, and 1/2x) - great for accelerated listening of talk shows (NPR), for example. Also has a "skip back 30 seconds" button just under the middle of the timer bar - nice to back up quickly w/o having to hold the Reverse button.

My first (very quick) reaction is that apps seem to be *slower* in general on my iPhone 3G, but that could be just me...

You say "Safari has added the ability to close all windows, leaving only a blank page, waiting to be commissioned for surfing." (Yes, I'm happy to have copy-pasted that.) At first I thought you meant there was an option to close all pages, which would have been great but I don't think that's what you meant. That said, I am happy to see that Safari no longer asks me to close some pages when I click a link while already at my max of 8, and instead it just replaces one of them.

After installing 3.0 I have found that many, atleast half of my apps ( apps bought from itunes ) will not run. Have restarted iphone a number of times but still no joy , they try to start up and then after a fraction of a second close. ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM ??? or is it just me . ( Debating whether to do a full reset of iphone and reinstall of everything to try and remedy ) All Apps woked well before update. w.t.heck

Some applications need to update themselves for the new OS.Check App Store updates frequently and wait a few days. Not every developer is quick to deliver updates when new OSes come out.

I have the SAME issue! I've even searched the internet and feel better that I'm no longer the only one. The three main ones I use all say 3.0 compatible. I sent in a bug report for each. Luckily I will have a 3Gs tomorrow...

I fixed the issue! I re-synced it and removed one of the Applications (F-Mylife) because it was one of the main applications that kept crashing that I knew I didn't have any data or log in information I would lose. I didn't delete it from the phone I did it through iTunes. Once it was removed I re added it and I got an error message saying I am not authorized to use that application on the computer I was using therefor it couldn't transfer it. I went up to Advance and clicked authorize computer and did another sync and now EVERYTHING works.

A couple days I switched my iPhone main sync from my desktop to my macbook pro and it wasn't authorized yet. So I don't know if THAT was the issue or if it was the re-syncing that fixed it. But now ALL applications work fine. So hopefully this helps!

I'm a 3G owner and I've enjoyed 3.0 thus far. Things do seem to work quicker, there are myriad very minor changes that are quite useful (finally being able to delete individual texts among them), and all-around it's an upgrade that'll keep me happy until they roll out the 3GS's successor.

All that said, I'm still a little peeved it took them this long to finally give us some of the basics (they really needed three iterations before they finally spread landscape mode across the rest of the applications? Really?), and as usual, the AT&T/Apple partnership is grinding along with all the fluidity of a mudslide (would it have been too much to ask to have MMS capability ready by the time the release came out? I'm not buying their "need to delete codes from accounts" BS). But, I suppose, these complaints are just the squabblings of a relatively avid Apple fan who's gotten used to everything the company's turned out just working perfectly out of the box.

Anyway, I downloaded and installed the update without a problem yesterday around 1pm eastern, but haven't been able to access the iTunes store or the app store since... anybody else still finding the servers bogged down?

I am having problems with a game app - Adventures of Montezuma. It runs but PAINFULLY slow, as if there are several apps using up processor time in the background. Sometimes it gets so bad that it crawls to a stop.

While this is just a game, it makes me worry that other apps are being slowed similarly. I was hoping 3.0 was going to optimize code and speed the 3g iPhone up - not slow it down.
