iPhone OS 3.0: What else is new?

by Kent German

100 new features? We're still counting.

(Credit: James Martin/CNET)

When Apple first announced the iPhone OS 3.0 in March, it promised that the update would bring 100 new features. We heard the same thing last week at the WWDC 2009 keynote, but Scott Forstall, Apple's head of iPhone software development, only demonstrated a handful of the most notable improvements. Sure, we know about stereo Bluetooth, the Spotlight features, and cut, copy, and paste--and we've analyzed them in our iPhone 3G S review---but we want a full list of all 100 features. Since then, we've asked for the details, but Apple has yet to cough them up.

That's why we're calling on you, dear readers, to help us out. As you cruise through iPhone OS 3.0, keep track of all the "little changes" you see, no matter how small. If it wasn't on your iPhone before, we want to hear about it. We'll do the same on our end, and we'll compile a full list for your enjoyment. Good hunting!

SMS - this isn't that big a deal, but it is new. It used to "lock up" your phone for a few seconds while it was sending...the status bar would come up and your couldn't do anything

Now, it posts the SMS right away and the sending status bar pops up in the background so you could instantly begin typing another SMS before the previous one is completely sent.

I love that looking at screen shots of app (in the specific app info page) doesn't have to load in a new window, just flick side-to-side.

I would absolutely love to check out these so-called new features, but the iTunes 8.2 update first caused my machine to blue screen. After restoring a two-day old image of the machine, iTunes 8.2 now won't recognize my 2G iPhone at all. Tried re-installing iTunes, still nothing. No help, no support, it's pretty sweet.

omg, sorry to hear that, another example of what crappy soft itunes is
by kibbeeluvr June 18, 2009 3:24 PM PDT
I had a similar problem when I updated iTunes a while back. Did you remove all previous versions of iTunes before installing the new one? I had 3 previous versions showing in my add/remove programs window.

Tight
by matthewrmccarthy June 18, 2009 8:38 PM PDT
maybe not the fact that iTunes is a crap soft, but that the person is using a crap comp/OS!! You can thank Microsoft for the problem (the blue screen of death), not Apple.
by michael_j_x June 19, 2009 6:28 AM PDT
@ matthewrmccarthy
yes you are right. Its the OS fault. This happens to me for every single app that I install or uninstall (sarcasm). Don't blame the OS if Apple can't write a proper app for anything other than OS X.

I-pod (Shake phone to shuffle to different song, sleep timer)
Keyboard (landscape typing in SMS, E-mail and of course Safari)
Calendar ( enhanced calendar allows to sync with Google Cal, or Microsoft Exchange via some settings)
Voice Memos ( This doesn't really seem new to me considering the fact there were apps out there on the store that did this before)
Search Feature ( search using spotlight just like on a Mac computer, searches everything on the phone from e-mails to songs on the ipod to e-mail)
Safari ( auto fill feature)
Bluetooth (*** I have still yet to figure out HOW to connect my ipod to my bluetooth car stero set) I already had the phone connected but have yet to figure out how to connect the ipod to the bluetooth

Thats all for now :) will post more later when I have more time

how do you start the sleep timer
by JoshT1983 June 18, 2009 2:58 PM PDT
Clock > Timer, then flick to set the number of hours and minutes. Tap When Timer Ends and choose Sleep iPod, tap Set, then tap Start to start the timer.

When the timer ends, iPhone stops playing music or video, closes any other open application, and then locks itself.

To activate sleep Timer
by nycazncarguy June 19, 2009 1:50 PM PDT
actually, the sleep timer is not a 3.0 thing. I've seen it on my touch since 2.1, I believe. If not, then definitely in 2.2.1.
by trleavy June 18, 2009 11:11 AM PDT
Ok, so pre-OS 3.0 it would always capitalize the "lol" when ever typing a text. And now that I upgrade to 3.0 it doesn't capitalize it!

Yeah ive noticed a bunch of differences in the auto-correction. It doesnt work as well as it used to! doesnt correct as many words for some reason. i typed "me" and it suggested "ne"... really?

Camera App
It now displays the last taken picture on the botton left. When the iphone is rotated, the picture also rotates. Tapping the picture takes you to the camera roll.

it does it at least once a day

Mine did too when I tried to update Shazam and it didn't update. The next time I went into the App Store it asked so it could try the download again
by mobile_bob June 18, 2009 11:27 AM PDT
I like the added detail in the Recent Call list. You can now see what number (Mobile etc...) was called or received, and you can see details about the call if you click on the item's arrow (Time, Date, and Length of the call)

When headphones aren't plugged in, no volume slider appears. It might just be the first gen touch since it lacks speakers.
Oh, and when I double tap the home button to bring up music controls without headphones, why does it say "dock connector" where the volume slider used to be?
Reply to this comment
by kliegla June 19, 2009 5:27 PM PDT
same thing here! although, i dont think its a big deal because we cant hear anything anyways unless headphones are plugged in. i think it says dock connector, because for every other ipod/iphone running the OS you get physical controls for volume (for the speaker) and the only reason there would be volume virtual controls is for the headphones (to accomidate us 1st gen users) so it says dock connector because it assumes that it is plugged into a dock of some sort, in which case it doesnt need to have volume controls
by alexclst June 20, 2009 5:39 PM PDT
I see this too as a 1st gen iPod Touch user. The problem for me isn't the text, and the explanation makes perfect sense. The problem is that the way it's implemented I can't select a primary double-click of the Home button feature (like Search in my settings) and have the iPod Controls on to instead show the iPod controls only when music plays. I will get them all the time, even with a fresh reboot of the iPod. So, to even have the Home button ever trigger Search I can't ave the iPod Controls slider on. The iPod selection just below the Search selection also doesn't seem to do a thing. I've reported these as bugs to Apple.

JoshT1983: The sleep timer was there in 2.2. Been using it nightly for over a month now.

The "Scrubbing Rate" that you get when you drag the position marker in an audio or video item is now variable by sliding your finger up or down while dragging it, for much more control when moving around inside a long video.

Audiobooks and Podcasts now have a 30-second skipback function. I've not yet looked for it in movies or television shows, but it doesn't appear to be there in songs.

how do you set the sleep timer
by notovny June 18, 2009 2:44 PM PDT
Open the "clock" app, select "Timer" and set "When Timer Ends" to "Sleep iPod."
by DustoMan June 19, 2009 7:09 AM PDT
As a person who uses an iPod Touch to listen to podcasts, the scrubbing and 30-second rewind are fantastic. Well worth the $9.95.
by JohnBarbagallo June 18, 2009 11:31 AM PDT
Interestingly enough, an "iPhone" category is now available for the phone number type. How cliche.

Since I use the iPod feature a lot, I noticed the following things:
1) Search feature in iPod (artists, albums et al)

2) Double-tapping the Home button when the iPhone is locked used to bring up the play, previous track, next track and volume slider controls. Now it displays the name of the song, the album and the artist.

3) Reducing or increasing the volume with the side buttons used to produce a volume icon and the scale, filling up or down depending on what you were doing. Now it says the words "Ringer (headphones)" in addition to the volume icon and the scale.

4) And finally, this one annoyed me a lot, but they have changed the algorithm used for sorting the playlists. Earlier it used to consider the "." (period) symbol prior to A,B,C. So the sorting was, ".", A-B-C..Z, 0-1..9. Now the period is sorted last, i.e. after the numbers. I was in the habit of putting a period before my most played playlists, to keep them up top. Now I have to devise a new method.

Use spotlight
by notovny June 18, 2009 2:47 PM PDT
Oh dammit. Changing the sorting behavior is bloody annoying. It's bad enough that the Touch doesn't respect your playlist folders. I'd had whole heirarchies of playlists sorted with leading dashes for a similar reason.
by MARVACMAN June 18, 2009 12:00 PM PDT
When you want to rearrange apps, you can now move an icon from the last page to the first page for example with out disrupting the icons in place on the pages in between. It does not start shuffling the icons until you hold it in place for a second. Minor but handy
