Rumor: iPhone tethering to cost $55 per month

iPhone tethering is awesome, but will you really have to pay $55 per month for the privilege?

iPhone tethering is coming soon (or now if you're up for a quick and easy hack), meaning you'll be able to use your handset as a wireless modem for your PC. But at what price?

Rumors have been flying that AT&T will charge as much as $70 per month for tethering privileges, but now mobile-apps blog Appmodo is citing "a source with AT&T" that the cost will be $55.

Note to AT&T: Over my dead body.

Most of the people on this planet think you're already charging too much ($70/month minimum) for voice and data. Now you want $55 more for tethering, which is really just an extension of the data plan we're already paying for?

If that rumor pans out, you'd better have a thick skin, because the blogosphere will tear you a new one. And I will be leading the charge, as that kind of unmitigated greed makes my blood boil.

Now, if that $55 figure is for data and tethering, meaning you're adding only $25 to the monthly bill, we can discuss it reasonably. That's still way too much, but at least it doesn't bury the needle on the Ridiculous Meter.

Over to you, readers: what's a fair price for tethering? Interestingly, I just today used my hacked-for-tethering iPhone in a coffee shop where the Wi-Fi wasn't working, and it totally saved the day.

So there's value here, and consequently I'd pay an extra $5 for it--maybe even $10. (Actually, a pay-as-you-go option would be dynamite.) But $55? Come on, AT&T. Seriously?

Update: AT&T's Facebook page says the $55/month-tethering rumor is just plain false. So what will the price be? "We'll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch." Whenever that is. I'm glad to see a seemingly official response, but enough with all the cloak-and-dagger, already!

$10 isn't bad... but not anymore... I mean come on.... I have unlimited already..... and yet I'm still willing to pay an additional fee for unlimited unlimited data.... the fact I'd pay more at all is something... right? right?

The market for tethering must be miniscule. Especially with a smart phone. I can't think of a need for carrying both my iPhone and a laptop. If I did have a need, then most likely it'd be a business need, and therefore a business expense that I could pass to my employer or write off.

$0. Unlimited data is unlimited data. Whether or not it's going into my laptop should be immaterial.

Does this mean you can get tethering for free if you jailbreak and hack-for-tethering? If so, AT&T is going to practically force Apple to go with another carrier.

A pay as you go feature for the tethering would be great

I rationalize it this way - I pay $30 a month for 5 Gigs (that's spelled "Unlimited" for advertising purposes) of data transfer on my iPhone 3G. Whether I use that 5 Gigs tapping on the face of my phone, streaming music when docked to speakers, or surfing the net tethered to my laptop - it's all coming down the same pipe! As long as we staying within our 5 Gigs, tethering shouldn't make one bit of difference as long as we use a little common sense. Shouldn't cost 1 penny more!!! Now for those of use that might start tethering and using it as a primary means of internet access, pushing those Gigs of use way up there - I can see where AT&T may have to change an additional fee. But, for me to occasionally tether my iPhone to my laptop isn't costing AT&T a darn thing. ----- I have this message for AT&T: If you want to be greedy ! Go ahead and hassle me about occasionally tethering my iPhone. Drop my service if it makes you happy. You're not the only cell phone company on the planet. And last, but not least - for me your a convenience, not a necessity!

I have a Motorola Q9 that I upgraded to WinMo 6.1 and the tethering option was taken away with the upgrade by AT&T. From others I know with smartphones, it appears AT&T doesn't let anyone tether with their smart phones, not just iPhones. Not that I think that's fair, but that just seems to be the stand they're taking and it's a blanket policy to drive people (business users) to buy USB dongles to charge to their corporate jobs. They must think that the only customers out there wanting tethering are heavy business users that are getting reimbursed at work for the extra charges (much like luxury hotels charging for WiFi).

That said, my iPhone order is currently "processing" and I'm curious, now that I've learned iPhone users get free WiFi at AT&T hotspots, can I tether the hotspot Wifi to my laptop before they turn on 3G tethering? Sure would be nice to get out of the office some days when I need to concentrate, or avoid those luxury hotel WiFi charges!

I would like AT&T to come down on their data pricing algorithm and charge $35 for all data and tethering and messages. Even at that price, the AT&T gnomes will be making more money than Midas.

...or we can just hack into the function and to heck with AT&T. BTW, whatever happened to Apple looking into opening the iPhone to multiple vendors?

Ouch.

It's free in Canada, although Fido claims some BS about requiring 1 GB data plan. Still, if you plan on tethering, you'll probably already have their current 6GB plan so it's a non-issue.

The story was updated. "**UPDATE: June 19 1:50PM PSD: Reports across the web are misinterpreting the original pricing for tethering. The data plan with tethering would be around $55 per month, NOT $70 or an additional $55 per month on top of existing data plans. Thanks."

If u are paying for data, then it's paid for regardless of where it ends up. Loosely if I buy some iTunes songs over cellular then transfer them to my laptop I just tethered.

As a carrier if u felt something was going to destroy your network because of load but wanted to pretend it was all cool you could charge high to discourage use.

Just don't use it for p2p or downloading movies/applications/updates and u are being respectful.

Carriers and their 1's and 0's are out of control. If u think we are overcharged for Internet 10's then do the math on an SMS, per Mg they are out of freakin control

Another vote in favor of tethering being free of charge when used reasonably (i.e. using the aforementioned 5 gig usage rationale)

If unlimited data isn't unlimited data, then they should change it. Is AT&T Vista Ready too? How did that pan out? If you name it one thing, it should be that thing, not the other. It should not matter how I use my allotted data. It's like charging me extra if I let someone else use my phone. Am I surprised? Of course not. Remember when text messages were "part of the plan". Once they find a way to make money off it, they'll exploit it.

If this is put out with a cost, I will leave att. I had this free of additional charge along with WIFI Hotspot access at TMOBILE two years ago! I pay a LOT more for my phone and internet with ATT and its not worth it iphone or no iphone.
