Finding iPhone OS 3.0's small changes

by Kent German

Though everyone knows the iPhone OS 3.0 brought welcome and long-awaited changes like multimedia messaging; a landscape keyboard; and cut, copy, and paste, there are a host of other tweaks from the software update that Apple has not publicized. According to Apple, the update offers 100 additions to the iPhone, but we covered just a handful in our iPhone 3GS review.

What other features are new? Well, a week after Apple released the update to the world we have a better idea. We've done our own exploring, but last week we also asked for your help in finding the update's hidden treasures. Thankfully, you responded in force, so we're glad to offer you this list. It's still not complete, so we'll be adding more as we (and you) find them. (Note: I've only included features not listed in the review.) Also, Apple has posted a handy chart detailing which OS 3.0 features are available on the iPhone Classic and iPhone 3G.

  • See the phone number type (mobile, home, work, and so on) and length of call in the Recent Calls list
  • Create an iTunes account or switch accounts right on the iPhone
  • Attach multiple photos to an e-mail
  • Log-in to your YouTube account, see comments videos, rate videos and subscribe
  • An option to retry sending failed text messages
  • A prompt for confirming the deletion of notes and photos
  • App Store and calendar subscriptions
  • Failed app updates now are shown as a duplicate icon with a "Paused" label
  • Phone calls from numbers not in your contacts list show their city and state of origin
  • Launch apps from Spotlight
  • Swipe to delete notes in the Notes app
  • Speed control in audiobooks
  • E-mail podcasts to a contacts
  • Track scrubbing in the iPod player
  • Scroll through songs at multiple speeds
  • Additional characters in the messaging keyboard
  • If you press and hold the period key in the "To" field of an e-mail address, you can select .net, .edu, .org, or .com
  • Multiple signature options
Correction: An option for multiple signature is not a part of iPhone OS 3.0 update. We apologize for the error.
  • When listening to music while the iPhone is charging, the display shows the album artwork instead of the battery meter
  • When the iPhone is locked while listening to music, the display shows the artist and album name
  • If no Notes are saved, the Notes app displays "No Notes" instead of automatically stating a new note
  • When texting, the sending bar now appears at the top of the image rather than over it
  • Icons appear next to the carrier name when call forwarding is activated
  • The number of installed applications now appears in the Settings menu
  • The number of installed apps is limited by the available memory, rather than the total number of allowable menu pages
  • Typing "LOL" now defaults to lowercase rather than uppercase
  • In addition to the cut, copy, and paste feature, shake-to-undo also works when typing
  • When the App Store prompts you to rate apps, it defaults to no stars instead of one star
  • Antiphishing features in the Safari browser
  • New applications now appear in the first open space after the Home screen, even if space is available on the Home screen
  • When rearranging applications, you now can move an app icon from the last page to the first page without disrupting the other app icons in place
  • New playslist and podcast sorting in the iPod player
  • Magnify photos after attaching them to an e-mail
  • Audiobooks and Podcasts now have a 30-second skipback function
  • Include a portion of an e-mail in your reply by copying the desired word or phrases and dragging them to the "reply" button

I can't find that option either. Little help here please.

Actually, the iPhone OS 3.0 did not include an option for multiple signatures. I've made a correction and apologize for the error.

I don't know if this is a function of the 3.0 OS or my shiny new iPhone 3G-S, but I am now able to stream the MP3s version of my favorite web simulcasted radio station via Safari on the iPhone. I was not able stream this MP3 via Safari with my old iPhone 3G.

www.thegroove.org

Click on the "ListenLive" in the top right corner of web home page.

Ignore the signup popup, just click "CLICK HERE" at the top of the popup.

Click the MP3 stream...(WMA does not work) The MP3 stream will start playing in a quicktime window and remain playing until you stop it. You can perform other iPhone tasks while the MP3 stream is playing.

I Love This!!!!

"Include a portion of an e-mail in your reply by copying the desired word or phrases and dragging them to the "reply" button "

How do you do this? I've tried to do it, and I can't seem to get it to work.

While an email is open, highlight a section (or word) and hit the 'copy' button. Select the icon below that allows you to 'Reply' or 'Forward' and select 'Reply'. Your reply email will now contain the copied section below your signature.

The worst difference is that if you are on a call and have a second call come in, the original call will here the same tone you here. Soooo aggravating!

some of these are welcome changes (the ability to move apps multiple pages eliminates a lot of headaches) but some very basic controls are still missing

my personally desired feature is the ability to have more control over what actions make the phone vibrate when in silent and ring modes... i would like to have the phone vibrate while in "ring" setting for everything except the alarm clock... I have a custom fade-in alarm that I made in garage band and the phone vibrating before it has a chance to fade-in completely defeats the purpose of the gentle-wake-up alarm i spent a bunch of time on. the only solution is to have the phone vibrate feature turned off when in ring and remember to put it on silent whenever its in my pocket in a noisy environment (i miss a lot of calls and texts now)

just something to keep hoping for I suppose

More controls isn't always better if they crowd the interface but a simple vibrate on/off ticker box to the alarm settings screen wouldn't add too much clutter and a welcome functionality

very useful for link heavy web sites like google news ,cnet etc !
it should have been added since the beginning but better late then never

with OS3 I am NOT able to add multiple signatures nor am I able to change the sort order in iTunes, perhaps this is a 3G-S only feature?

I can't add multiple signatures either and I have a 3GS. This is not documented in Apple's manual so I don't think it's real.

Noted 2 things. 1. Maintains last scroll position. say, u are now in 150th app in a category..clicking category button on the top, will take you to the position in the list of apps you exactly were..I always wanted this, but never worked in the previous OS. 2. (probably other should have seen this). Preview Images of the app are all in one page now..

What about new bugs - like MAIL is set to fetch/update MANUALLY - but it still updates automatically at some weird times...

Also you can now close a page in safari when it is the only one open. previously you had to open a new page so there where 2 pages and close the first now it automatically opens a blank page.

It would be great if you could delete individual calls instead of having to delete them all....perfect for those pesky girlfriends who want to look through your calls! ;)

While my resaons for wanting this are nor the same as yours, i couldn't agree more. I can't beleive they've released 3+ versionsof the OS and still don't offer this. Another example of Apple missing the forest for the trees, So often they are so cutting edge and yet aare oblivious to the basics!

When you load a "secure page", for example, signing into your bank account website, a little GREEN lock with green page name shows up just below the address field. YAY APPLE FOR BEING GREEN!

I've also noticed a bug/glitch. While i am listening to music on earphones and call someone using the "voice control" on 3GS the music continues to play although i am making a call. The receiver cannot hear the music, but it does give me something to listen to while i talk to them. Only happens some of the time...so dont blame me if it doesnt work for you.

Stereo bluetooth is great, but you cannot control the ipod from an A2DP device.

We're talking about the iPhone -- not iPod.
by ender21 June 25, 2009 7:17 AM PDT
Actually the column's major subject is OS 3.0's changes. And since iPod is built-in to the iPhone, I'd say it qualifies.
by abchase1 June 24, 2009 10:04 PM PDT
Almost forgot... you can now download songs from Itunes without a wireless connection. Haven't tried the E network though, just 3G.

You always could download songs. You just couldn't download them if they were over 10MB.
