Look up song lyrics on the fly with Lyrical
Dying to know what that singer is mumbling? Lyrical looks up the lyrics for any song, even the one that's now playing.
Just the other day my daughter was trying to sing along with Coldplay's "Viva La Vida"--but, let's face it, those are some tough lyrics to catch. If only I'd had Lyrical, a new app that looks up song lyrics--for the currently playing song.
That's pretty slick. Just start a song on your iPhone or iPod Touch, then run the app. In a matter of seconds it retrieves the lyrics from crowd-sourced site LyricWiki.org.
Of course, you don't have to play a particular song to get its lyrics: Lyrical also lets you browse your music library, pick a song, and then see the words.
Likewise, you can search for a song, artist, or snippet of lyrics (which is great for those times when you hear a song you like but don't know the name). The search feature is a little hit-and-miss right now, but the developer promises to improve it in a forthcoming update.
Speaking of which, the next version of Lyrical will store previously viewed songs and let you play a song directly from the library-lookup screen.
Best of all, Lyrical is free, though it does have ads. If you want ad-free lyric lookups, check out Lyrical Premium, which costs $1.99. Me, I'm perfectly happy with the free version, which has instantly become one of my all-time favorite apps.

Also, Fuel has a song entitled "[Untitled Track]" that was playing on my phone. I opened Lyrical, which pulled up the lyrics...except that the text was a jumbled mess. Looked as if whatever proprietary format they're storing the song and lyric info in (XML knockoff?) wasn't properly formed, and I got a mess of random characters surrounding what should have been the actual text on my screen.
In the future, and I don't know enough about the OS 3.0 SDK to even know if this is possible, but it'd be great to have the lyrics highlight the lyrics as they're played, like a karaoke machine.
I'm the developer of Lyrical, thanks for the stellar review! I'm happy to say that search has improved drastically, both in results found, formatting, and reliability.
Crosby4Life: Sorry, on occasion you run into a song whose page on LyricWiki has been formatted improperly, and sometimes this shows.
dluxfresh: I'm sorry Lyrical wasn't able to find the songs you played, but we rely on LyricWiki for our lyrics, and while they are one of the largest repositories of lyrics around, they unfortunately don't have everything.
lands on my ipod touch's home page.
thank you.
Wow, thanks, I didn't think I'd actually get a response (7/5 !?!!!) but, yes, I have a HTC Touch Pro which I'm sure you're aware runs Windows Mobile 6.1.
What a fabulous idea this is! =) This app would be like having a little lyric fairy come in and just wave a magic wand to clean up my awful mess... I was actually getting excited reading about it until I realized the only reference being made was to the iPhone. =(
I clearly just stumbled onto this by accident, since I don't have an iPhone. I'm pretty sure the rest of the mobile community would be quite excited to have this app available for us as well. Now that I know you will actually respond, I will be eagerly awaiting to hear that you have created this app for the Windows Mobile platform and won't let so much time pass before checking out this forum again.
=)

- I would like Apple to explain why this app was removed from its app store -- and how they plan to reimburse people for their purchases once those apps have been bumped. Thank you.
