Apple releases iPhone OS, SDK 3.1 betas to developers

Apple released on Tuesday new beta versions of the iPhone OS 3.1 firmware and the iPhone SDK 3.1 for developers. The OS 3.1 is available for all versions of the iPod Touch and the iPhone, while the SDK 3.1 is available in versions that are compatible with Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Without seeing the update, we don't know of the changes it brings, but we're hoping that it contains bug fixes for problems we've covered here and here.

If you've seen and used this new update, please tell us about your experiences with it in the comments.

MMS is enabled and when you edit the home screen, the phone vibrates.

I might be crazy, but I swear my phone seems faster and the battery life seems longer after the 3.0 update. I can almost use my phone a full day before it dies :)

(sounds like a slam, but I'm being serious. I love my iphone but it dies QUICK. It seems to be lasting a little longer after the update)

You are absolutely correct.

My G5, dual 2 Mac which I bought the first day that they came to market, in June 2003, which is just now 6 years old still does everything I throw at it... Machine just won't quit, do matter what!

I guess you aren't that correct after all...

The one killer feature would be to be able to hook it up to a screen and have it mirror everything you see on the iPhone to the big screen. I was hoping for that as part of the June rollout.

Apparently VMMDldotCOM couldn't understand what you were saying, as I know what you meant... the operative term you used was "everything".... Not just video. The video cable is great, yep... I have one set up with my universal dock to my entertainment system, but still, the iphone is limited to TVout on YouTube, iPod Video, (and Camera Roll - recorded video only for 3Gs phones).

Unfortunately, the feature yo're requesting isn't practical enough for them to develop. Not only would the logistics of tunneling out any and all graphics the iphone and apps generate (there'd have to be some serious hardware tinkering, not to mention rendering speed and resources), but it would also push the AppleTV unit sales down a little in what is probably already a slightly slumped market.

I know I may be in the minority here, but I was happy to pay $10 for the update. I had already resigned myself to giving away my current iPod touch and shelling out full price for one with Bluetooth. I think I got off pretty easy! Now, how's about a camera...
