Madden for iPhone: A first look
Madden hits Apple's small screen, and Favre rises from the dead.
(Credit: EA Sports)Madden may rule the roost of NFL games for the most part, but one pesky little company still has a license for mobile phone-based NFL games, too: Gameloft. We covered NFL 2010 recently, and mentioned that it could give Madden a run for its money in the mobile space.
While Madden for the iPhone and iPod Touch was rumored before, EA Sports has formally confirmed the release of the game with some screenshots and a promise that it will be available "in time for opening day," which is September 10. Promising expertise that 20 years in the business can provide, the news release for Madden on the iPhone and iPod Touch is clearly cognizant that there is a competitor out there already.
A large number of baffling icons fill the right corner of the screen.
(Credit: EA Sports)One observation, looking at these screens, is that there's more than a little similarity between the interfaces of this game and NFL 2010. A virtual joystick on the left combined with contextual action buttons on the right will try to accommodate for the missing control pad in much the same way as Gameloft's title--although to be fair to Madden, it looks as if it has more action-button options on the offensive snap plays shown. Receivers look like they're color-coded based on how open they are, and it seems like tap-to-throw may also be the mechanic here, as it is in NFL 2010.
As for how it plays, we have no idea. It certainly looks more like Madden for the Nintendo DS than Madden 2010 for the Xbox 360. Stay tuned for "opening day," which is a couple of madden-ing weeks away.

I played NFL 2010 on the hard mode in the playoffs (using Green Bay) and I couldn't be stopped... of all the plays they had in the playbook, I ran up the middle, and long bombed most of the time. My opponent never scored on me cause its to easy to intercept. I like to lose sometimes, I hope Madden dials up the difficulty some.
When I first played NFL 2010 in season mode on easy, I lost the first game to the Bears 9-0... they only scored 9 points on me, the next game when I got a feel for the controls, I killed 35-0, I think my best game was 56-3 in a 5 period game. I even went as far as choosing the Raiders and I still killed. Make it harder you will hear alot of complaints about it being to hard, but so what, losing is acceptable and is part of life.
Hmmm, how many iphone Apps look and play like their Xbox 360 counterpart?
If EA doesn't get all full of themselves and prices it reasonably, I could see myself forking out for the game to run on my 2G Touch...heck, I need to use the bloody thing for something else other than than Wi-Fi connectivity and mediocre-sounding music.
What a dumb statement! So just b/c it can function as a phone, computer and video game system, "
Well look at who is really buying iphones........or who is buying them for them.......TO many the Iphone is only a device to play with. Come on the age group is what range of age? face the facts........
