Smile! Flickr has an official iPhone app

The official Flickr app for iPhone and iPod Touch offers search, browse, and upload features.

Better late than never? Following in the footsteps of countless third-party efforts, Flickr has finally made its official debut in the App Store.

The app hits the ground running--make that scrolling--with a slick Ken Burns-style slideshow of hand-picked images from the site.

An initial tap of the Recent, You, or Contacts button along the bottom leads you through a one-time authorization process (which requires a visit to Safari), after which you gain access to the respective user-account features on Flickr.

You can also search for photos and videos, of course, and do all the usual stuff with whatever you find: add to favorites, share via e-mail, leave a comment, etc.

Of course, the main appeal here is uploading: You can snap and upload a photo on the fly or choose an existing snapshot from your library. The app lets you assign the photo to a set, add tags (including a geotag from your current location), and choose a privacy level.

In short, the official Flickr app does just about everything you'd want it to (except batch uploads, that is), and with simplicity and style. It's free, of course, and it works with both free and Pro accounts.

So this begs the question: is there an existing third-party app that "does Flickr" better than Flickr's own app? Share your thoughts in the comments.

I've been using Flickit for some time now and it has worked for my purposes rather well. I'm very excited to try Flickr's offering.

I just downloaded it this morning and it works very well, perfect for viewing your flickr account on your iPhone.

If you need to upload in batch, do it from your notebook.

I just wonder why it cannot upload photos at full resolution. ALAS! Otherwise, it's spiffy.

For batch uploading (in full res), I use the copy and paste method or Flickit (which allows you to geo tag and assign to a set, etc).

I think when the official Flickr app can do the high res and batch uploading, it will be my go to Flickr app. Otherwise...

It uploads full resolution photos if you have the iPhone 3Gs. An update can take care of that tho.

Ahhh, the 3Gs. I don't have that one. Well, maybe the app will get updated so that I can upload full res. :)

Flickit has a pretty good batch uploading capability but is limited in other areas. I'm sure the official app will have batch in a future release. I'd be willing to bet they just wanted to get something in the AppStore and with how long it takes to authorize it was out off until the next ver.

Alas, no ability (from what I can see) to view Group photo pools. :(

I don't really upload pics to flickr on my phone, but I have been using darkslide to share photos... I noticed that the flickr app seems to display the thumbnails much faster than darkslide... plus i like the app logo better - minor thing, but enough for me to erase darkslide.

I've heard of ShoZu for uploading, but I'm not sure if it does batch. Anyone tried using that?

Unrelated, but I also like Stick It, which is a sticky note-like reminder app: www.tapfactoryapps.com/Stick%20It

From http://www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/105668/: "The Flickr App for iPhone will be available in the following regions: The United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Hong Kong in English, French and Traditional Chinese."

So a big middle finger to the rest of the world from Yahoo & Flickr. Thank you very much.

Mobile Fotos does it better. Here's why:

1. Quasi-batch uploading.
2. Easy-to-use in-app method of posting flic.kr shortened url to Twitter.
3. Upload in original resolution (Flickr's "official" app downsizes the uploads).
4. "Search Nearby" feature for locating geo-tagged photos taken near your then-current location (great feature).

Once the "official" Flickr app adds these features (which I suspect it will), I'll switch. Until then, Mobile Fotos for me.

Oh boy! It looks like all the cool kids have yet another app that is a solution looking for a (real) problem. I guess the majority of us cell phone users who neither have, need, nor want an iPhone will just have to make do somehow.
