Navigon GPS iPhone app to get live traffic

One of my biggest complaints about flat-fee GPS apps for the iPhone is the lack of real-time traffic updates. That's about to change.

Navigon AG, the developer of the Navigon MobileNavigator app, announced Wednesday that live traffic capability, called Traffic Live, for its GPS phone application is coming soon. This feature will be available in October for the North American version of the application.

The new Traffic Live feature offers real-time traffic updates for the GPS app.

This is going to be the third major update for the app. The first and the second updates added the capability to dial up a point of interest from within the app and also added a text-to-speech feature. When available, this third update will make the application the most complete GPS navigation app for the iPhone.

However, there's a catch. As expected, this upcoming update will not be free, rather it will cost another $25 via an in-app purchase, on top of the current $90 price tag for the app itself. (For the first four weeks after its release, however, the Traffic Live feature will be available for an introductory price of $20.) The good news is it's a one-time fee, meaning you won't have to continue to pay to use this feature.

The other GPS application that also offers real-time traffic is the AT&T Navigator,, which doesn't have built-in maps (meaning you will need to have a live cellular data connection to download maps in real time, which can be unreliable) and costs a monthly fee of $10.

According to Navigon, the new Traffic Live feature will provide precise traffic information by using real-time speed data from over 1 million drivers across North America, including commercial fleets such as trucks and taxis, as well as regular drivers with GPS systems. The feature also uses information from traffic cameras, speed sensors, and conventional traffic messages coming through a radio network.

When the new feature is available, the Navigon GPS app will automatically include the traffic information when calculating a route, and provide onscreen alerts indicating new incidents and congestion along the current route.

This is going to be the most exciting update for the app so far. Make sure to check back in October, as I will do another road test of the app to see how this Traffic Live feature pans out.

I looked at all the GPS apps for the iPhone and waited for TomTom for comparison purposes and finally chose Navigon. I haven't been sorry. The interface is the slickest in my opinion and in-app calling is a plus. The last update gave me TTS and now live traffic is coming (for a one time fee - which still beats AT&T's $10/month navigation service). Glad I purchased mine before the price increase in September - but even so - Navigon is WAY ahead of the competition.

Those Maps come from Google. We cannot use them due to some licensing issues(if i am not wrong).

I'll stick to the native Map app on the iPhone. It's freeway traffic indicators works just fine for me.

I've had live traffic on my phone for almost a year now.

This is not new and it's not an apple "breakthru".

Whats wrong with google live traffic?
And if you live in the california bay area there is 511.org. They're all free and easily accessible and its free.
And I hope y'all are using it before you pull your car out of Park and not during your commute.
Why use an app when a web app has been in existence for years and its open platform.

This makes Navigon, which is already my preferred iPhone GPS app, the killer app of them all. Best looking interface, most user friendly UI, and now this. TomTom's one little edge was sometimes it comes up with more intelligent routes, but not enough to make up for its ugly graphics and lack of the advanced features of Navigon.

Navigon with live traffic will actually make it a superior GPS unit to what was installed in my 2008 Lincoln (Microsoft Sync).

Given how long it takes to download (I don't think the believe in patches) this would be a good occasion for Navigon to also update the maps and POI database which is quite outdated.

I tried this app and was never able to get it to work without crashing on my 3G. From the reviews I saw, it was not an uncommon event for folks.

App is OK, except the map data is outdated and incomplete. One feature it is lacking is to be able to input the Lat. and Long. even the most basic GPS's have the ability to do this.

After using both the TomTom 1.0 & Navigon 1.2 iphone apps, I can report that it's the Navigon app which resides on my home screen. Although TomTom runs a little smoother and occasionally does give better routes, it does not outweigh Navigon's superior features, especially text to speach. This feature is critical in eliminating ambiguity while driving on the highway and also minimizes the need to look at the screen. Now with traffic updates coming, I don't see TomTom making its way back on my phone anytime soon.

GPS apps are still unreasonably priced. You can get a nice stand-alone unit for $100, so one would think that eliminating production costs for the actual units would pass significant savings onto consumers.

Do you know if you can start a navigation starting point other than your current location? I'm in Houston and flying to Tulsa. I need to plan my trip starting at the Airport. Can it be done?
