Marketing and PR folks take note. In one of the more brilliant publicity stunts in recent memory, iPhone accessory maker Case-mate is going downscale. Really downscale. And green, too.

It's created a 99-cent cardboard "recession" case along with free "Sharpie Script" personalization (yes, some dude or dudette will inscribe your case by hand). And these babies can be bought in bulk: Case-mate is offering 10 for $7.99.

I'm impressed. This is something you'd expect to see from the Onion News Network, not from a real tech company. And while the recession has hopefully ended, plenty of people are still hurting, even a couple of iPhone owners.

Here's the FAQ on the case, in case you want to buy one:

Q) Is it waterproof? A) No, so don't put it in the dishwasher.

Q) Is this case flammable? A) If you light it on fire it is.

Q) Does it come assembled? A) No, see our animated gif for a step-by-step demo!

Q) What device does this case support? A) iPhone 1G, 3G, and 3GS.

Q) How does this case stay together? A) It has locking tabs at the bottom and top of the case, as well as an adhesive strip to keep the case held together.

Q) Can I use this case to microwave my frozen pizzas? A) I don't see why not, although we can't ensure quality taste.

Q) Will this case make me awesome? A) I think that goes without saying.

Q) Is there a warranty? A) No, it is cardboard, after all.

Q) Can I get a paper cut on my ear while using this case? A) My first guess would be no, but anything is possible, we don't promote unsafe use of the recession case.

Q) How long will the case be sold? A) As long as it needs to be to get us out of this recession! Or while supplies last.

Q) Does it come with a screen protector? A) No, we are in a recession!

Q) How long will the product last? A) Forever as long as you don't destroy it!

Q) Is this case made from recycled cardboard? A) 100 percent of only the best for you!

Q) Will the product scratch my device? A) No! its cardboard not brick!

Q) Is the CM logo impressed on the case? A) This is known as the "people's case."

Q) Will this product be sold at Case-mate retail locations? A) Nope! The recession case is sold exclusively here at case-mate.com!

Thanks for the heads-up. I suppose one will find this piece of trailer trash at Instructables or Lifehacker shortly.

Hey cardboard is good enough to ship millions of items everyday. I bet it works as well as many cases on the market. It certainly will generate some conversation.

I love it. It is a statement about the foolish big-money cases for sale these days.

Personally, I don't understand why the device should need a case at all. Is the housing badly designed? Is the iPhone too fragile to be used as a normal cellphone, subject to normal wear and tear?

Why the heck should it be put into a case in the first place?

No, the iPhone/iPod touch isn't particularly fragile.

However, I found myself dropping my iPod touch rather frequently since it's just glass and metal, or it would slip out of a shirt pocket if I leaned over. Finally, I bought a silicone case and it provides enough grip.

@EskWIRED are you saying to can't think of any reason as to why someone might put their phone or mobile device into a case? Let's see.. to prevent scratches to the screen and body, protect against accidental drops, to add a little personalization.

While you may be fine with the normal wear and tear that become visible on an uprotected mobile device other's, myself included, prefer to protect our investment. A $10~$20 case to help keep our $200~$300 mobile devices looking new is a cheap investment. I don't know where you shop or your budget but a $20 case doesn't seem like "foolish big-money" to me.

@viper396,
With that logic, I guess I should be looking for a giant baggie for my Porsche.

Regardless of their entry costs, cellphones are TOOLS, to be used to their fullest capability until the Next Great Thing comes down the pike. If a case makes the thing last longer, then fine. But if it's only to protect some notion of an "investment", then perhaps you never should've taken the thing out of its retail box to begin with.

After all "NIB" items are always worth the most. [sarcasm]

make or break.
For your porsche metaphor you could say thats what garages are for.
by viper396 September 17, 2009 4:30 PM PDT
@make_or_break, as implied by your porsche metaphone I assume your Porsche looks like total crap and you simply don't care about the monetary investment you made when you purchased it. Is it scatched up, un-washed, with broken headlights, etc. or do you actually make some attempts at caring for it, maybe even park it in a garage like rigden33 mentioned?

I'm certain you knew what I ment in my origianl post but you splitting hairs on the word "investment" is just juvenile and petty.
by redbullie September 18, 2009 7:26 AM PDT
I can't believe you dorks are arguing about whether to use a cell phone case or not.
by zgreenwell September 18, 2009 11:41 AM PDT
Cases prevent scartches and provide a different look. After a Case I used for a year was finally beat up enough to pitch, I just used the phone without a case and everyone asked me if I got a new phone.

I strangely want one, if only for the looks it would give and questions from other people.

Strangely, I want one too, lol. I think I'll ask them to draw an apple logo on the back, with iPhone under it (sharpie style), lol. And, the hell, I'm pretty sure cardboard is a helpful to protect the iphone as any other cases, lol. So original. I loved the FAQ! =D
by bmccorm2 September 17, 2009 11:16 AM PDT
I'm personally not gonna buy one....but I'm sure that if you put an apple logo on it you will create a sufficient market (read Cult Following).

'Ugly' is in the eye of the beholder. And this 'holder' is one mighty fine and hilarious thing, if you ask me. It's great that Case-mate can actually--in a way--poke fun at itself and the accessory industry. Considering how some of these cases are actually rather outlandishly priced for what you actually get, it's neat that Case-mate can show a bit of humor in these trying times.
