iPhone OS hacker, GeoHot, released an updated version of Blackra1n earlier this week, a jailbreak utility for iPhone OS 3.1.2 and iPhone baseband 05.11.07 that now includes a carrier unlock that lets you use the iPhone on any GSM carrier.

We covered the initial release of Blackra1n that was Windows only, but now a Mac version of Blackra1n is available. Mac users can use Blackra1n to jailbreak or unlock all iPhone and iPod Touch models regardless of its hardware generation.

Using the application is simple. You just connect the iPhone or iPod Touch using the standard USB sync cable to a computer and follow iClarified's tutorials on how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G, 3GS using BlackSn0w for Windows or Mac.

Note: By jailbreaking or unlocking an iPhone or iPod Touch, you may be violating your terms of service agreement and voiding your warranty. CNET does not recommend jailbreaking or unlocking; proceed at your own risk.

the jailbrake by Geohot is straight up impressive.
As simple as one click and puff all the rest (custom ipsw's, boot loaders, etc, etc) gone!
Blackra1n is most definitively the quickness, easiest way to jailbrake/unlock an iphone.
Although new iphones (mainly 3gs) have a different mechanism for booting that makes it seem as if thejailbrake failed miserably when actually its all just an apple magic trick.
After making it rain the program runs in your iphone and shows the picture of geohot (harry potter any one?) and begins the process of jailbraking/activating your phone. While this is taking place, the pc/mac shows a memo saying to donate etc while the program itself says wait for reboot.
The iphone actually never reboots and in turn goes to the recovery mode, meaning therefore that something went wrong. So if you havent read about it, you find yourself stuck between restoring and making it rain while the results are futile. Well, actually they were not, the jailbrake was 100% successful and your phone is jailbroken, problem is, is not booting like it used to.
Basically, if you just make it rain, after you made it rain and it didn't work but aka went to recovery, the phone will acutually be jailbroken and it wont need to reboot. I know i know, sounds very weird, but thats the new procedure. Apparently (and i'm not an expert, just have that problem with my 3gs) apple made it so that the iPhone itself determines whether is jailbroken or not and thus decides whether to boot or go in to recovery. So if you have a 3gs with the new boot loader, like me, this is going to be your story.
You can't turn off your phone, because if you do, you will lose your jailbrake and the phone will want to be restored (although if you make it rain once more it will be perfectly functional again with all your data still there).
I advice doing it using windows, as jailbraking twice with my mac yielded a wifiless iphone.
But again, proceed at your own risk be wise.
